Thanks for the nice video! But speaking of the misconception, the most common misconception that some people, including Taiwanese, tend to make about Taiwan is probably the idea that Taiwan is the free China or Republic of China. Most countries do "consider" Taiwanese as ROCer for practical reasons, but officailly, they don't recognize that Taiwanese "are" ROCer. I know that sounds weird, but let me explain it. ROC is for sure China, but the sovereign of Taiwan island (or Penghu) and the most citizen on it never belongs to ROC. The story that Taiwan was given back to China after WWII is actually a propaganda from both chinese Republics(ROC and PROC) on the one hand. The other hand, USA and most other countries, even ROC government, which is now almost 100% constituted of Taiwanese, don't want to make it clear, so that they can take advantages from it. After all, it's not possible or very difficult for Taiwanese and ROC to resist the threat from PROC without the help of USA and its allies. Back to WWII, ROC was actually only the proxy of the Allies for temporarily taking over Taiwan as well as Vietnam right after the war. The Allies did plan to give Taiwan to ROC before the end of WWII, but because chinese civil war and then korean were burst out, and the Allies knew ROC would lose, so they decided not to give Taiwan to ROC, so that PROC and the communists couldn't claim that Taiwan was a part of it. In short, the relation between PROC and ROC is like two Germanys or Koreas, but it's more complicated when Taiwan get involved. ROC lost the civil war right after WWII and chose to move to the island whose sovereign it actually didn't own. ROC and KMT knew this very clearly as well according to lots of the historical documents.This is the diplomatic position of most countries, including UN, to Taiwan. PROC is for most countries in the world the official successor of ROC, but this has nothing to do with Taiwan. Taiwan is de jura totally outside the chinese civil war. I haven't checked South Africa's Position about Taiwan, but I believe it must be the same with USA, Britain, Canada, Australia, Japen , Gemany, etc, the position which I mentioned above. You can easily find proofs for all these. In every single important official formal diplomatic document, you can find that Taiwan is clearly and consistently distincted from ROC through the careful wording. The sovereign of Taiwan is an unsolved problem after WWII, so is the Problem between ROC and PROC, but they are not the same one. Officially, Taiwan and the most people on it de jura still belong to the Allies and its successor, in short, USA. The legal territories of ROC are actually only Kinmen and Matzu. ROC is a country almost no one recognizes, while Taiwan is not a country, but almost everyone recognized it practically or de facto through the ambiguous name ROC/TW. It looks very weird, because you hardly find another example like this in the world. Another common but confusing idea is that Taiwan is like a hybrid of China and Japan, as well as the real china, the what-it-could-be of China without culture revolution. Don't you think this sounds a little weird? It sounds like the real China is a mixture of China and Japen lol. Actually the idea of Taiwan as real China or free China is an old one from last century, when ROC still tried to claim it was the real China. So this is not very consistent with the new idea that Taiwan is a mixture of China and Japen, in which chinese culture is only a part of taiwanese culture, just like japenese and aboriginal culture is a part of us as well.

Thank you for your explanation. I appreciate it. Regarding your last point, if you listen carefully, in the video, I said "in some ways, Taiwan is almost like China would have been..." The key words here are the words "in some ways" and "almost", which means only certain aspects of Taiwan are almost like China might have been. It doesn't mean that everything about Taiwan is exactly how China would have been. If I mention this point in a video again, I will try to make it clearer as to avoid any misunderstandings.

@@iamnathank Thank you for your reponse and explanation. I actually didn't mean to refer to what you said in the video. They are just the very common ideas of Taiwan which i find a bit inconsistent. hey Nathan. Nice and indepth video as always. have to correct some correspondence in the subtitle : 台灣 = Taiwan 大陸 = mainland、continent 中國 = China if you use the mainland instead of China , you mean China is the mainland OF Taiwan or Taiwan belongs to China. some people could be triggered by that. LUL you could explore more context about the usage of 大陸 by yourself. that is a intersting subject to find out.
@iamnathank
@iamnathank 5 жыл бұрын
mou mobile Thanks for the explanation. To be fair, many locals I speak to, if China is mentioned, they often just refer to it as 大陸。 Do you think that would mean they’re pro unification or not?
@moumobile5639
@moumobile5639 5 жыл бұрын
@@iamnathank No, they are not necessarily unification-supporters. And I know this sounds confusing. The main reason is that part of Taiwanese lacks the awareness of precise choice of vocabulary. ( You could have heard it about "沒差啦、隨便啦、有差嗎?" from the conversation in taiwan ) The usage of this term has been around for very-very long time and is widely used. If you don't think consciously about the meaning of this word , you are likely to choose the "mainland" instead of "China". and didn't notice that has completely different meanings for the international community. Imagine that your parents have been using "mainland China" since you are young , your school teacher says "mainland China", and it always uses "mainland China" on textbook . and then news presenter also uses the "mainland" as the abbreviation ( on tv and radio and newspaper ) . and they call the Chinese tourists as 陸客. Because in the early past ,the government officially called China as mainland China. ( and why the goverment use it that way is another history lesson ) . Even some of my friends who support Taiwan's independence sometimes accidentally blurted out "the mainland". And now the awareness of using the correct title has gradually increased in these years. (at least in the educated class) Of course, this is just my explanation. Don't be afraid to ask your Taiwanese friends while chatting , they probably won't think you are picking a fight. ( And it's interesting to watch their reactions) According to different age groups, education level. You would get very different answers. ( for some taiwan elders , they are never ready to discuss about "fixed fact". that could be intense) for the case that locals you spoke to, they may not want to bother you(themselves) that much effort/time for explanation. or they are trying to avoid the sensitive subject. just my guess.

This is Taiwan in English academic works, they also refer to mainland China as ''the mainland''. This is not a issue. Legally speaking you should not contrast Taiwan and China as two places. However, there are people who do not recognize the ROC, and they cannot accept the law of Taiwan, for this reason they would prefer foreigners to call the mainland as China. They take this as you are supporting Taiwan independence. So do not fall in their trap.
