Soap bubbles are called Shabon-dama (soap balls) in Japanese. Shabon originates from the Portuguese word for soap, “sabão.”
The first Europeans to reach Japan were Portuguese merchants who landed in southern Japan in the 16th century. Ever since, many Portuguese words have become part of the Japanese language.
For example, Kabocha, or pumpkin, comes from the Portuguese word “Camboja.” The vegetable was introduced to Japan from Cambodia, the anchorage site of Portuguese trader ships.
Ombu, or piggyback, was derived from the Portuguese “ombro” or “shoulder.”
Other Portuguese loanwords in Japanese includes Juban (gibão/doublet), Tempura (tempero/seasoning), Jouro (jorro/outpouring), and Kompeito (comfeito/confectionery).
The first European nation to establish trade with Japan, Portugal became the gateway to western culture for this island far east.
