I like your videos, and I respect your opinions about the downsides of education in HK. However, the way I see it is that when you have a sound financial backing (e.g: a career path you can fall back on, knowing your family can support you if things go wrong, savings) you have so many more options! When you have options you can go and fly business class to San Francisco to chase your dreams, put uni or your job on hold to explore stuff that's not directly related to making money now, or just chill out for a bit. That's absolutely OK. But please realise that many other students just don't have these options. They have to invest all of their time and hard work into the one narrow path that you described, because even though that path may be constraining, it's the path that's most likely to work given the limited amount of options they have. I think most Hong Kong local students are in this situation, and they just can't take a break and explore other paths so readily. They are really really need their degree to work out to have any chance at a decent paying career that can pay for the high cost of living in HK, because they know that if things don't work out they don't have much to fall back on.

A college student in HK , the education system in HK is pain in the ass , so u are right , we dont have much choose to choose , striving in this narrow path you described is the only way we can do. But for me , education is not just for learning new knowledge, it is about all round development, giving us different opportunities to find out something we are interested in and would like to develop it as a future career.

SLY MAN It’s the same everywhere. Most university students here in Melbourne work part time so that they can go on holidays (definitely not flying business class)

I am sure Torres is a smart and hard-working guy, but it's quite clear he came from a privileged family and is receiving a bit of financial help in one way or another. Let's take this video for example. He was flying Cathay business class to San Francisco and sat in what appears to be "The Deck" lounge. I did a quick search and found a round trip Cathay business class ticket from HKG to SFO costs $46,000+ HKD in Feb. I mean c'mon... what 22 year-old fresh college graduate with no full time job can afford to travel in such luxury? His KZbin channel and "consulting" part time jobs definitely don't pay enough to sustain his spending. Don't get me wrong... I love Torres, but he is clearly biased on the topic of pursuing one's dream. Everybody wants to make a living doing something they love and chase their dream, but the reality is that not everybody has the financial support from their family to do so. I just don't get why Torres won't admit he is privileged and that his view may be biased. It's okay to be privileged and come from a wealthy family. It's nothing to be ashamed of, but it's equally as important to acknowledge where you stand socioeconomically compared to most students who barely make enough money to support themselves. My family isn't rich, but I know I am privileged compared to most people. I try my best to understand where others are coming from despite the fact that I may not share similar experience. I am a 20 year-old studying abroad in a private university in the US. I have never worked any job in my life and I admit I receive tremendous help from my parents. I acknowledge the small privilege I have and would NEVER tell people to drop out of college and "chase their dream." I don't enjoy all the courses I am taking, but I know I need my degree to be financially independent and stable. I also don't want to waste my parents' hard earned money. Perhaps I will chase my dream one day, too. But for now, I need to start learning to be a self-sufficient and responsible adult and chasing dreams simply isn't part of the equation. I think most young adults in school can relate. (P.S. okay maybe I am just jealous Torres gets to fly business class while I only fly economy class back to Hong Kong. Must be nice up there...)
@ylimeiust5 жыл бұрын
You made a good point that everyone seemed to miss. He should stay true and honest even if coming from a privileged background, I mean, there's nothing really to be ashamed about. What he's doing is that he's downplaying that side of him too much to stay relatable. I'm a sub of Torres but this video is a little farfetched.

Thks man you just list out the reality and the real situation, even i am studying a higher diploma in hong kong, i need to support my tuition fee and living expenses for my study because i cannot receive help from my parents but adversely i have to take care themselves and many poor students like me studying in the evening class. Before you chase your dream, you need to have a stable or better financial condition to support what you are going to do because there is no free lunch.

"People love to tell you what to do. But they don't have to suffer with you if you end up not liking it" 托哥講出我心底話......
Yes. I agree. University education may not be necessary but you cannot deny that could be a unique journey no matter you find it useful or meaningful. As a HKU graduate, I remember I received a bag with something like "HKU is not a destination but a journey" printed during registration day. To be honest, HKU won't necessarily get you a great job. But, it gives you a wonderful journey. Someone may realise after the graduation. Someone may be enjoying while they are at HKU. From what you shared in the clip, you met the exchange students at HKU and decided to explore the world instead of continuing to be a nerd. That's exactly what university education means: to choose the way you want to live with. You may not appreciate your time at HKU but it indeed inspired you to be a person that we are watching, isn't it? That's part of your life. There are so many teenagers working so hard to get into HKU or university in general. Please encourage them to try their best instead of portraying that is cool for not being a college student. Just like you, they will not know if they want to be a college student until they really experience it. What I'm trying to say is please appreciate all failure and success in our lives because those make us better. DSEers fighting!!!!
I was just accepted to HKU for a semester! Soooo excited for my exchange semester, Hong Kong, HKU, other exchange students, locals, food,... I’m from Germany 🇩🇪 btw

I don't think there is any wrong for expressing your feelings towards university. I watched a video earlier about transferring university twice or three times in HK. It's great that you found what you want to do in life. Not many people are brave enough to chase their dreams. So I guess that's why most of us graduated and secured a job and then worked our whole life in it. That's why I love to watch your videos.

我自己個人感覺不喜勿插: 老實講你己經比人擁有很多, 令我覺得你有些與現實離地同不知足, 很多人家經濟同家景差, 連大學甚至high dip都無錢讀, 因為要養屋企同自己, 單親過D要自己狽起頭家嫁, 你自己都識講父母無俾錢你係after graduate, HOW about before graduate who support your tuition fee and living expense ? only by yourself ?
Nope in fact that the truth is My Mum was proud of me from being taken good care of the family in a tough situation. Everyone character is unique and so what makes you believe that you are the right judge in this case?
university is just the place not just study but also to discover and understand yourself. HKU just let you know what u want to be and give you the platform or opportunity to do it. Dont just simply say quitting Uni or regrets about going to Uni , you should cherish it and remind yourself how extraordinary Uni life is.

OMG I totally agree with you! But I also stand for the first comment by Brendan. what suprised me is that in mainland china nearly all students who attend the "Gaokao"(college entrance exam) have the same idea with you when looking for a university. Most of them don't know what they like, what kind of life they want or their career path, so it is so stressful when you are struggling on what you are studying on in uni. The cruel truth is, most families don't have a strong finance background for them to choose whatever they want and that's why "GaoKao" exists..... specifically saying, uni majors are the way student can make a living for future life, but we really need to take time to reflect what kind of life we want. I think that is the most important thing in uni life. I strongly support your deicision of quiting a uni when you finally know what you want for you life. As long as you can make a living and stick on what you love, you can have any kind of life no matter how others judge you! :)

I think it is very similar to the situation I met when I graduated from high school in Mainland China, I didn't even know which major I should study for my uni. I think some comments below are correct that not everyone has the chance to really do as brave as you can, but I think Torres provides us a lot of motivation in this video. As he mentioned he got a very good grade in the first academic year, I believe this was not cuz he is rich or sth, just cuz he was really hard working. I love your video and I really feel the motivation and positive attitude you give us. I think, at least after this video I will also try to focus on what I really want, I can't be that decisive to kind of "quit" sth, but I think I will try to follow you like apart from the school, to leave more spaces to myself and think more about myself.

I also went to HKU till my sophomore year and now transferred to a college in the US. The reason why I chose to move here is that HKU broadened my horizons - that's what HKU did for you too. HKU has the highest proportion of international students compared to other universities in Hong Kong, and I believe that is why you could "meet and connect" with the exchange students. I wouldn't judge whether things you're doing are luxury to other local students, but at least I think you should not put the blame on HKU. To me, I am very grateful for what the school has given me.
