This drama is such a treat. The cases and paintings are beautifully executed, and I feel like I learn a lot from them. The short airing time is definitely a plus for me because it keeps the momentum. We need season 2. They can’t just show the last scene and expect us to roll with it 😫 also, where can I watch that portraitist documentary? I’m so curious!

I really did not expect Shen YI's ability to be a real thing!! This makes me like the drama even more!! I usually enjoy dramatizing (not too real) type of crime dramas, but knowing this is real, is incredible!! Hopefully there's gonna be a season 2 based on how they ended it.

Season 2 is coming, can't wait. This series makes me become a fan of Tan jianci, which has been a long time since i haven't over focus on certain artists. His smile is all needed to capture my heart, but after researching everything about him, omg, he is a super talented artist, he can do almost anything. He is just so good at everything. But if you watch his past works, it's not that incredible (cringy, awkward but still cute tho), which make me more respect to him, bc this shows how much he done to improve on whatever he can do now.

I enjoyed this drama very much. The ending implies there will be a second season or some type of sequel. It's interesting to me that in both "Reset" and this show the senior supervising police officers were women. Regarding forensic artists, there was a tragic "Baby Doe" case several years ago in the U.S. where fishermen found an ice chest containing a badly decomposed child's skull. A forensic artist was able to reconstruct what the girl looked like. From the images, both she and the adults responsible for her death were identified. The image of the child and actual photos taken of her shortly before she died were amazingly similar. Given how wildly unreliable eye witness testimony can be, the skill of such artists is an amazing asset.

I think the reason why they got better was that Du Cheng finally stopped blaming Shen Yi for his captain's death. Not only that he started to understand Shen Yi better. I actually started to think about when it was going to end because I liked it so much that I didn't want it to end. I don't know if you noticed this as well but once they started to get closer and bond they really started to pick up each other's habits. I always laughed when other characters would mention it or when I noticed it myself. I love that they look out for each other a lot. You could tell they really needed each other for different reasons but they were the friends that they actually needed. Shen Yi's gift to say the least was so beautiful and remarkable I loved watching scenes especially the ending when he didn't want to draw Du Cheng but still did and his belief that he wasn't bad despite what he was seeing. I thought he was a warm and loving character. You could tell from how the people around him responded to him. I also like how Shen Yi can read the people around him pretty well just simply by him looking at their eyes. Now Du Cheng I thought he was weird but in a cute way. I loved the scene where he was going on that blind date and he was so uncomfortable that made me laugh. I think he is funny because, in the beginning, he doesn't want to admit that Shen Yi is good and then is forced to understand why Shen Yi is the way he is. I NEED A SEASON 2!

No there isn’t no misunderstandings with a female lead or anything like that. There is just a small dispute between the two male leads but for a reason and if you watch it you will understand

As an artist, I LOVE how much they paid attention to details and how the actually paid a real artist to do the art. I've seen way too many times "geniuses" artists in drama, doing below average stuff and pretending it's great. It may seem stupid, but even the way he holds and uses his pencils/brushes etc is accurate, and even though I would have loved this drama anyway, it was a surprise bonus I was really grateful for. Also loved the chemistry between the ML, of course, I would love to see more of them. SPOILERS AHEAD I have to say, my favourite scene is in ep.8 , when we see how the interrogation of ShenYi went. DuCheng breaking down, and finally saying "Throw your pencil away. Never draw again. Your painting kills people. You don'tdeserve to be a painter." after ShenYi failed to draw the woman, and the little jump of fright and lost expression of ShenYi as he realizes what he has done.. I got chills. That scene stuck with me. Aaaaaah I'm not over this drama yet ;-;

Can so relate to everything you say, just watching the drama for the first time and loving it!! The only thing I find weird for an artist who throws paint on a canvas is how clean his clothes are, the easle, the floor (presumably) and the surroundings... I only paint at my little desk and don't usually throw so much paint around and still have a difficult time keeping it from my clothes and my desktop 😂😂😂 but still, I enjoy this drama so, so much!!

This was actually very enjoyable. Watching two disparate characters evolving to create a true partnership while still retaining their individuality was intriguing. I would like to see them as partners again and would happily watch a season two. The cases weren’t perfect but very acceptable. And oh, the relief of NOT seeing a female partner dissolving into helplessness is a gift!

I loveee love love this drama and won't hesitate to admit it is by no means perfect. But the characters are so endearing, their development is so realistic and the drama is so stylish and artistic...it's such a gorgeous, captivating watch that I don't mind at all. The way they incorporate art techniques and theories with biology and psychology, and how this perfectly weaves into the cases...so so unique and mindblowing. Plus all the shots of the art getting created is frothhh. I also love how our leads go through the 'enemies to besties' trope but it isn't forced or dragged out at all. The initial tension is understandable but they both still remain complete professionals in their field, and then seeing the subtle changes in their relationship and eventual recognition of each other's strength is an absolute joy. Jin Shijia's Du Cheng is so gruff but adorable, I love how realistic he feels and all his little mannerisms, and I love that they don't dumb him or the police force down just to make the 'genius' character shine. The real winner for me, however, is Tan Jianci's Shenyi, both in writing and the portrayal of such a fascinatingly layered character. Quoting the drama, he's 'a kitten amongst the police officers but a warrior amongst artists' and I think that perfectly describes him and his powerful balance of both his talents. As for Tan Jianci, how does he manage to pull off this mix of alluring, mysterious and capable and carry so much gravitas despite his smaller frame, while somehow still being SO GENTLE AND PRECIOUS? jumped into your video right after i finished the finale and wow, that was a wild ride, kept smiling and laughing as i watched your commentary 😩 i found out about the drama thanks to the amount of edits that appeared on my blbl main page and ofc your edits too, heard it was a crime triller drama and started it immediately just two days ago. for anyone who hasn’t started it, don’t worry, you won’t regret watching it! the pacing isn’t slow at all but isn’t that fast to the point you can’t understand, it fits just right. for someone who loves crime dramas, as long as it passes my low sense of logic, i can ignore any bugs that appear. not to mention, the characters were always focusing on working and there weren’t any unnecessary sub plot. just as i was wondering if the new characters that appear would start an unrelated sub plot, it turns out to be just another case HAHAHA although the cases seem dramatic, i’m pretty sure these cases Do exist everywhere in our society, it really does increase one’s empathy when watching this drama. not to mention, tan jianci’s character, shen yi is really not your cool and distant genius, he gets emotionally invested in lots of cases yet it doesn’t affect his judgement in his career (chef’s kiss) overall, this drama has really raised my hope for future thriller cdramas (the recent romance / romcom dramas of 2022 has got me on knees asking for better ones 😭). hoping for more seasons in the future, the final scene really gave me goosebumps (cries)

I'm actually a crime drama junkie, so finding a good crime drama is always delightful and I am glad that I decided to watch this one as it is fantastic. I've only managed to watch six episodes so far but am amazed by this drama so far, the cases are so interesting and the art in it's many forms is just utterly beautiful.

@@mindik773 Oh, there are so many to choose, but they're mainly Korean ones: Hello Monster, Memorist, W (romantic but also crime), Voice 1-3, Tell me what you saw, Children of Nobody, Nobody Knows, Signal, Tunnel, Happiness (zombies and little bit of crime sprinkled in, excellent one) and many more (I've seen so many that I have forgotten the names). Then the British ones are excellent, love them very much. And at the moment I'm watching the Chinese crime drama Under the Skin, it's a good one too. But all the Korean crime dramas that have been broadcasted by tvN or OCN are excellent, love them very much.

I binged-watched this one in one weekend and I think this was the best drama I've watched in 2022... The acting is amazing, the sound quality is good, the camera work, the editing, the script, the long arc storyline and the short plot storyline, I'm astounded by the quality of the drama. Tan Jian Ci's acting is phenomenal, he has so much depth in his acting, it was really so good to watch after I had watched too many idols-drama, this was high-quality acting! I'm probably going to rewatch it lol

I LOVE this drama! With this drama, I discovered: 1)A job titled “Forensic Artist” and it’s a full time job. 2)TanJianCi! I end up loving this actor! I didn’t know he exited and now, I can’t have enough of this guy. His acting is top notch! -I loved most of the paintings that were shown in the drama as well. Especially the Nail art with wind blowing threads on the wall? Really? That was brilliant! It gave me chills! -it was a beautiful collaboration between art and mystery. It was too short. I would really appreciate if they can give us more seasons. To me, I felt the bromance. And that’s enough for me from a Chinese drama.

I really enjoyed this drama in spite of not really being a crime drama fan, but the interesting setting with the forensic art, the writing and the acting really pulled me in. I am now a die hard fan of Tan Jianci. I can only hope we some day will get to see him as Gu Yun (though I know it's a very slim hope at this point). In the mean time I'll definitely check out anything he does next!

I really enjoyed watching this drama and that too because of the first impression video, or I would have completely overlooked it; since I don't recognised any of the leads. Later I realised that I have seen both of them in other dramas playing secondary roles. On positive end, I totally agree with AvenueX's points. On the negative side I have nothing much to complain too. The points she explained, exists; for me, they can be ignored. This should be one of the few chinese drama where I am not dissatisfied with ending at all. And because of the cliff-hanger in the end, I am looking forward to the next season that is if they make any.

Ludi in "Reset" was in the drama as well playing the bully schoolmate. The paintings and the cat (so adorable !) were really the show stealers for me in the drama. Everything else were not bad but some of the actions or events were kinda unlogical but overall not so bad.

Finish watching this drama in three days, and I want season 2!!! The last scene actually hinted a second season, so season 2, please 🙏 This drama is so enjoyable to watch, the cases makes me curious and almost make me binge watching it in one sitting. The drawing scene is so beautiful and believable, and I wish I can have just 10% of his drawing skill, in reality I think I don't have even 1% of it 😅😅😅 The thing I think a bit odd is about how knowlageable Shen Yi character, like he know how to read people and situation so well, they didn't tell us his education background, did he learn psychology in college or something? And I don't know about Police recruitment in China but can an artist without any proper police training become a police officer? He can't even properly shoot a gun! Ovel all, I agree with everything you said in this video. This drama is too short for it own good and seson 2 is a must

I think in one of the ep, they said his main job is police, he recruited as a police, his partner also wonder how he passed the recruitment with how he handle the guns. He was an artist that burned his art and start his job for police. He is a police with artistic background instead of an artist that working together with police. Edit: They know well about his art skill, so been using him more as an sketch artist instead of police. He is probably in police force through special recruitment.

I also love how they didn't sell it as a BL drama, and I can see them as best brothers. Du Cheng as the older brother and Shen Yi as the younger brother. It fits well! I guess this type of chemistry isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Wow I thought SY's abilities were over the top. Glad to learn something new. I enjoyed the drama a lot though as many chinese commenters have said, some details could have been added to make viewers be more aware of the victims' desperation. E.g. for the DV case, a one-liner could have been added as to why the victims didnt go to the police (the perpetrator would have been locked up for only a couple of years and when he gets out, he will find and kill his victims and his victims will live in fear knowing he is out there alive). But it's overall good enough for me to want a second season.

This drama was truly exciting and stimulating in many ways. I liked how the story wasn't truly predictable and at the same time touched a lot of topics which are considered taboo or sensitive . It kept you guessing, mentally debating and appreciating a lot of things. The morally gray areas were touched perfectly yet the crime was handled lawfully without any behind the scenes manipulation. The artistic side of things were truly beautiful and unrepetitive. Each case involved different artistic procedures and clues . The interpersonal relationships between the ppl in this drama was very realistic too . Overall a must watch drama mystery loving fans.

For me, this drama is refreshing, this is the first time I watch a detective drama that highlights forensic artists who most of the time become an underdog in a detective drama. I agree that some actual people can do what Shen Yi does because it is scientifically true, to determine people's faces from childhood to adulthood it's doable but it's hard to learn, also to analyze people's handwriting (as you can see that Shen Yi's signature on his painting with his master's signature is actually different even though at first glance it's a same). The interesting part is Shen Yi can use his teaching material about the philosophy and the interpretation of paintings that he teaches in his class to solve a crime

Indeed great drama. Shen Yi's abilities remind me of Sherlock Holmes' abilities. Du Chen as Watson, the partner who does whatever he's asked. But here Du Chen is still carrying out investigations in his own way, the way a police detective investigates. whose final results are both correct. This is where the excitement of this drama is. I hope season 2 has more cases and more episodes.

I am amazed of those super human abilities. In American drama they’d use special software to age someone like NCIS. I prefer this type of crime drama to crime crack down. I like forensic dramas. I enjoyed it a lot and i thank you for the edits.

I actually feel a bit bad for Jin Shijia. He said before (in an actor competition show) that he is a follower of Method Acting. I’m not a big fan of method acting (and a lot of great actors/actresses have dissed it lol), but whatever works works. Every actor has a different path to achieve excellence. My problem with Jin Shija being trained as a method actor is that...It feels like those trainings and techniques just don't suit him and don't help him improve much. It seems that he cannot grasp what method acting is truly about, and cannot adapt it freely to the small screen. If I were to compare his theatrical outward way of acting to Tan Jianci's more subtle inward way, and choose which one is more likely a method actor, I would have chosen Tan. I don't know what made Jin choose method acting, but I think it will be better for him to incorporate some elements from other schools of acting. Because I do think that he takes acting very seriously and really want to be a good professional actor. He has a lot to learn from fellow actors like Tan who seem to have found a style of acting that perfectly suits them and enables them to keep improving.

As a Sherlock fan and other consultant crime drama fans where the genius is either cocky or weird, I typically enjoy it. However, this warm take on the "genius" character is something I like as well and is very different from what I've seen. I hope there will be more dramas like this in the future.

I loved this drama! I couldn’t find any good C-Dramas to watch this year at all, I couldn’t find shows with any interesting plots and they have the same old storyline. I hope to find more interesting plotlines like these!

the last scene is based on "heroes and noble man" barnett newman.. a large red area surrounded by five thin straight stripes creating complex and asymmetrical canvas partitions. when looking at, it acts as markers of space and time. i know this from twitter^^

Thank you for the review! I have finished the drama yesterday and I don't regret the time. The artwork was very solid, I think the studio employed a team of artists working in different styles in order to bring to life the talent of Shen Yi. I agree on all other points, and especially the purity and the sincerity of the friendship between the male leads depicted in the drama. On question though: are you sure Tan Jian Ci wasn't dubbed? His voice sounded exactly like Vin Zhang's in Rattan. I've seen Tan Jian Ci in The Secret of the Tree Kingdoms (he was excellent in that one) and he was probably dubbed there as well.

Just finished the series. I watched episodes 1-12 at a slow pace and didn't feel particularly pulled it. But by then, the suspense plot has enough build up and the characters have established a nice chemistry that I binged episodes 13-20 in one day... These last episodes are quite good in building up suspense and bonding the two male leads, though I was a bit let down by the resolution of the main plot in the last episode. As with this type of detective drama, there are plot holes and unbelievable cases, but the reward is in the character development and in this case, the chemistry between the two male leads.

I am still on episode 7 it's a fantastic drama till now...and hoping it gets even better as said by AvenueX...the only thing that is troubling me and it happens with a lot of other crime shows where a genius is introduced the police with so many years of experience is put on the back burner...Du Cheng in ep 1 is introduced as this strong experienced cop with an amazing instinct but once Shen Yi is brought into the department it's only him solving cases(i know the show is about how these artistic geniuses use their talent in solving cases) but u can't just make DC stand at the background in awe of SY's intelligence and not contribute anything (basically without SY the case wouldn't be solved even when there is a room full of highly experienced cops)this hurts my intelligence...I hope as the show progresses and their bond is even more stronger equal contributions are made to solve cases... Update: episode 7 onwards is what I am talking about...DC and SY perfect blend... season 2 eagerly waiting ❤

The only million dollar question not answered in the drama: why was the picture of 8 year old pic needed to kill a policeman you already known.. I guess to get Shen Yi introduced and cause the friction between MLs

After watching Under The Skin eps 20 (the last eps), do you think there will be a season 2? Considering the last scene of eps 20 gives us a new big mystery that somehow related to Shen Yi. I hope they make season 2 because I really want to see Shen Yi again and the person on the last scene give me a lot of question marks.

Finished this drama on your recommendation and really liked it. But I felt the biggest issue I have with it (along with many c-dramas) is the structure of its episodes, aka when the “big reveal” or “climax” occurs and how each episode concludes. I felt the scripts was not written in an episodic manner and the pacing of the story is very random most of the time. This may not matter for a 50- to 70-episode drama, but for a 20-episode story about crime-investigation, it does create the quite unsatisfying viewing experience.
