40 years living in the Bay Area, I have seen the many ups and downs in the real estate cycles. But I have never seen, nor I thought San Francisco would itself morph from a vibrant, world-class popular tourist town and financial landmark to a nearly deserted financial district in just two years, now even Twitter is pondering on moving out. During the height of the tech boom between 2010to 2018, people from all over the world came to San Francisco for employment opportunities, as well as start-ups establishing headquarters, creating a high demand for housing as well as office spaces. Construction was going at a feverish pace. With the influx of people, the need for retailing stores, offices, restaurants, coffee shops and everything else were also sprouting all over the city. Just when everything seemed to be bustling and prosperous for the city. All of a sudden, there was the pandemic in 2200 which had proved to be the beginning of the down slide for many businesses in San Francisco. The entire world was turned up-side-down. People stopped commuting to work, malls became deserted, restaurants and convenient stores were the first to feel the impact on business and many closed their doors for good. At the same time, the tourists industry basically completely shutdown and thousands of people lost their job overnight. As a result, many become homeless. The city was beginning to experience a surge of property crimes, car theft, home invasion, gun violence and drug related crimes. Honestly, who wants to spend thousands of dollars on flights and hotel to see a dump! Anyone not familiar with the city please be warned, there is a lot of traffic traps driving in the city. If not careful, you may get a $290 ticket from a cop for infringing the bu- only lane or get stuck on the yellow grid on the intersection in the downtown area. The City by the Bay is a mess. Honestly, I am very reluctant to go to the city nowadays. The liberal city government in my opinion is in part to blame for the surge of crimes ranging from store robberies, shoplifting, open drug use, mugging, and carjacking etc because of the ridiculous laws. Whatever crime they can't resolve, they legalize it so from the crime statistics perspective, it doesn't show the reality. Only in California a criminal can get away with crime of theft, car break-in and store robbery because if the item(s) is valued under $950, he will likely walk with a misdemeanor charge, so there is no ramification . These crimes are committed in the open and store security can't do anything about it. They can happen at any street corner at any time of the day. I personally hate to come to the city if I can avoid it, let alone living there.

I moved to Bay area in 2016. It's really a shame for those selfish and stupid politicians to make such beatiful city become a cursed area in only 6 years.
I understand those mentally ill people which can't function by themselves. But i didn't understand why those "not mentally ill" voters, how can they tolerate that situation? Perhaps more that half of the population are kind of sick😢

Yes. US talk so much but no action. Concentrate on war rather than building their people. Poke into other countries' affairs. US has it coming on themselves. And the government are sitting on their laurels thinking that US will be prosperous and rich. The rich gap is so bad that they don't see at themselves but they could see it in other countries!!! 😂

This is precisely the most thoughtless behavior imaginable. Indeed, this is what those legislators do because they don't genuinely care about society. What they care about are votes and money. Without either, they would run faster than any of us. It's precisely because of this that they must create conflict, so they can garner more votes. And votes can bring them more money and reputation.

San Francisco has 18,000 homeless population, not as bad as Los Angeles County, which has 55,000 民主大國 還是管理不妥, 希望快點改善

Both places do have a homeless problem, but having lived in both LA county and SF the City -- LA county is many many times larger than SF. Your comparison isn't quite valid.
welfare is supposed to help the poor and underprivileged. yet, all they did was release the prisoners, let them live on the streets and commit crime (almost encouraging them because there is no punishment). If they don't feel those people should be in a regular prison, they should put them in rehab or mental institutions. There are a lot of institutions that keep the mentally unstable. Diagnose them and send them there. It does not help them to just have them live on the streets struggling to survive and feeding on their addition.

I don't agree with the second to the last woman. Human problems are largely psychological and man made. Over population, lack of self control and discipline have brought us here

Christopher Rufo 的報導十分中立,不包含任何情緒或立場,是個非常翔實的報導。 很遺憾,這裡的中文翻譯則相反。 翻譯出的中文報導和原文報導不在同一水平。 我替中文觀眾可惜。
