It's interesting to hear how others respond to Maugham. I have been a lifelong fan and he remains my favourite author. In my teens (many years ago) I worked in a bookstore. The manager asked me if I'd ever read anything by Maugham, and when I said I hadn't, she gave me "Of Human Bondage" saying: "read this and you'll be hooked." She was right. Many years later, Maugham's works make up a sizeable component of my own "small library." As you also noted about "Of Human Bondage" I've always regarded Maugham's primary strength to be his power of observation. Throughout his writings, he often instills himself into the story (long or short) as a peripheral character observing the main characters. (Third person). I recommend trying his short stories, in particular "Winter Cruise" and "The Three Fat Women of Antibes." Perhaps you'll be hooked too! Cheers, Davood.

Today I finished 'The Moon and Sixpence' for the second time. The first time I read it was 33 years ago. I had remembered little of the book but that it had moved me and left in my mind the desire, a lifelong desire, for Tahiti.

Maugham...my all-time favorite writer. I envy you the stories, the essays you're still to read for the first time. Luckily, he was a very prolific writer.
