Thanks for the tutorial. Can’t avoid the impression this module has been miniaturized to death.

nice tutorial, it's a bit easier to understand now. i feel like 4hp with an encoder instead of a switch (to manually scrub the tape) and some more comprehensive labelling would make it like 100x easier to use, i dont know why it needed to be 2hp.

Mine arrived new with the firmware totally borked. It worked, but not in any way resembling as described until I updated the firmware. No instructional videos have apparently been published since this one 4 years ago. Pretty weak. Given the infrequent nature of module availability, you would think they might find time to provide better after sales support. I guess it's time consuming to write poetry that customers are expected to interpret as usage instructions. There is practically no activity on their github, indication they have checked out on development. The latest firmware is from 11/17/18. Some of their other stuff appears to be receiving updates. I have this one and Just Friends so far.

This was my impression as well from reading through the site descriptions. It reads like a fine artist trying to explain their all-black painting.

so after dling the latest firmware NONE of my navigation seems to work the same way as it does in this video. i REALLY want to like this module as it seems totally up my alley but you guys certainly seem to be getting in your own way w/ it - between the oblique language and oblique module navigation. any help would be greatly appreciated as I think y'all are generally a magnificent company

For anyone who has had troubles with W/ I've been testing Beta11 of the firmware and it's seriously close to amazing. I'd expect a new beta in the next day or three if you want to wait but it would be great to have some others testing the firmware to help make it perfect (as is possible for the 1.1 update).

i'm down for learning street fighter combos for one fighting game, but this and a few other "button combo" modules in a rack would be like playing a fighting game where every combo from every other fighting game ever was possible with each character... i'll stick with the contra code tyvm

I bought this because I essentially wanted an OP-1 style tape to capture things and hop about. I was quite overwhelmed by the minimalism of the interaction design on this, but actually, after spending an hour concentrating on it, it becomes second nature. The only thing I am missing is the ability to know how far into 'the tape' I am. I can imagine leaving random bits of sound on the long tape by accident. I also don't know if you can completely wipe the tape quickly other than recording nothingness? The ability to hop about cue points though, and have triggered punch in and outs synced to the rest of a patch is really neat. I'm now thinking I might need some more utility modules to do interesting offsets to create delays and repeats for example. :0)

i really hope someone makes the module that this should have been... it would be great to be able to construct loops and compositions inside the modular. why is it 2hp??? it needs knob per function

am i right in thinking there is no way to trigger the start of a loop, and thereby get your recordings playing in time with the rest of your modular? that would make this interesting to me. im not sure why you need to be able to move q points around. id prefer a simple sampler which creates one shots or loops which cant be edited but can then be triggered/modulated in interesting ways. does anything like this exist?

thank you for this video. i bought the W/ v2 couple of weeks ago. the orange light above my my record is on constantly. do you know what that means? i can find nothing about it in the new manual. and i dont know how to erase the whole tape. i know this vodeo is half decade old, but maybe you can help. thx

interesting module, but it's FAR too small. (and also too expensive for what it is) I have a few of the modules made by 2hp and they are really fiddly once you have something patched up. but they only average about £100 each (usually less) so it's a "you get what you pay for" situation if this was bigger with a stepped rotary encoder instead of the switch I'd maybe consider paying £240 for it. (using a switch to scrub looks so fiddly) the whole workflow looks incredibly convoluted. for £240 it should be bigger (at least 4hp, preferably 6) with better quality (preferably illuminated) buttons and a knob to scrub (and maybe room for a small LCD or LED screen (like on ericas pico seq) to help with que points instead of LED's) it's gonna take a long time to remember what all those LED combos mean. I was very interested in the idea of this module until i saw the price and this tutorial, it looks way too complicated for a live situation.

If you could add cue points with a trigger input during record, you could make some cool beats. I guess this is aimed squarely at the experimental drone crowd.

Wow, talk about clunky and unintuitive interface. This is far too complex and fiddly for 2hp with difficult to remember button combinations.

At first, I was in complete agreement. However, after deciding to commit to learning how to use it, it's actually not that bad. Part of the problem I found was that this tutorial didn't really present things in a way that was easy for me to learn, so I had to take a lot of notes and translate things. Sadly, the documentation doesn't help much, either. Completely ignoring the terribly named "This" and "That" until after understanding the LEDs and controls ended up being pretty important for me, too. Overall, it's a pretty fun, if rather fiddly module. I'm sure I'll end up incorporating it in to my patches at some point.

Sam, you talked at nine minutes about a volt-per-octave sampler that would be demonstrated in a future video, any guestimate of when that might arrive? The more I've used the W/ the more genius it has become, I suppose in that sense it's a bit like Cold Mac; difficult or obtuse on first blush until you become comfortable with its peculiarity and then you fall in love.

at 7:30, what do you plug into THAT with the grey cable??
@theswolk
@theswolk 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the slow response - only just seeing all these comments now! Since the tape is typically stopped in NAV mode, I just plugged in a static offset positiveve voltage into THAT, probably +1v or +2v, in order to keep the tape rolling forward at a constant speed so that we could hear the the result of NAV mode redirects determined by the THIS voltage.

@@timcosgrove actually, you can record bipolar CV, as of version 1.2 - however it is not using the IN and OUT jacks - it is done with THIS (cv to record) and THAT (cv to output) - these jacks are actually bidirectional! You can switch the functionality of these jacks to become a CV recorder that functions in tandem with your audio recorder in LIVE mode - more info here: www.whimsicalraps.com/pages/w-latest-version/ It's as if you have two tracks on your tape - one for audio, one for CV.
