w112 Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Tailfin elegant predecessor of the S-class

In August 1961, another top-class model was presented with the 300 SE. With respect to its exterior and technical concept, it closely resembled the 220 SEb model but many technical specialties were included as standard. Basic equipment comprised not only the 4-speed automatic transmission and the newly developed power-assisted steering but also air suspension, used for the first time on a Mercedes-Benz and allowing a combination of sporty handling and maximum ride comfort. The brakes of this model, with the internal designation W 112, represented another advance: for the first time, a standard Mercedes-Benz production car was fitted with a dual-circuit brake system and disk brakes front and rear. The 3-liter injection engine was based on the tried and tested engine from the 300 d, but now had a light-alloy block and was thus approximately 40 kg lighter. Carburation was still on the principle of intermittent inlet manifold injection using a Bosch injection pump. In January 1964 compression was raised slightly and a larger Bosch injection pump was used resulting in an increase in performance from 160 to 170 hp. The body of the 300 SE was almost identical to that of the 220 SEb, but had more extensive chrome trim. The most prominent distinguishing feature was the chrome strip running from the headlights to the taillights in the side ribbing; additionally, the 300 SE had trims around the wheel arches as well as a broad chrome strip below the doors.

Amazing car.... I had lucky moment to raid this car, it was a taxi Car in Cairo in 1994, it was very sweft and very fast has a wonderful acceleration with amazing suspension system which never be in modern car of the 80s or 90s.

My dad fancied a 220SE in the early sixties, so he borrowed a secondhand one from the garage. It had no bumpers/fenders on it. " they are away being rechromed" we were told. It was only two years old. He decided he couldnt quite afford it and bought a Peugeot 404 instead. He gave in and bought himself a Mercedes or three when he retired. He deserved them and the 190E was a lovely car he enjoyed very much.

Goodness, this brings back memories. When I was very, very young my dad bought a 220SEb used in grey (twin carb 6-cylinder), would have been around 1965 and the car was old enough to bear a non-dating UK licence plate. He kept the car until 1973 when I think rust was getting the better of it. At that time there were very few Mercedes-Benz cars of any model in the UK. The licence plate on the Benz now graces one of my cars, following dad's passing in 2016 and mum giving up driving in her old age. I saw a similar car at M-B World in Weybridge a few years back

The "S" in "SE" indicates S Class (actually in German is means Sonder, which means special). So this is not the predecessor. Also, the '50s Pontons were "S" models. The 300 series Adenauer is the true predecessor.

The 300c W186 was called "the adenauer". But then came the 300d W189 , no "adenauer", and this was the direct predecessor of the 300SE. SE meaning Sonder Einspritzung , i e. Special Injection.

I had a 62 300SE right out of high school. I paid $900 for it and the owner was in tears saying bye. I drove it for years only having to replace rear air bags and leveling valve. It stay in my mom’s garage until she passed. The buyer liked the car so I let him have it. It was green and I had refinished all the wood inside. Boy I miss that car but had too many and no place to put another car. Big mistake on my part.

Ich wette, dass ein schmaler Haempfling den Stoßfänger nicht heben kann. Mir ist in den 70er auf meinem Opel P1 (BJ 1960) ein VW Käfer gefahren, bei mir war nichts, ausser das Auspuffrohr war etwas nach unten gebogen. Beim Käfer die ganz Front zerstört.
