Mercedes' first-generation S-Class, the W116 model, somehow can't breakthrough into the category of collector-desirable classics. There is only one exception, the Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9, created only in a quantity of 7380 hot rods for gentlemen. The starting point for its unit was the 6.3 V8 from its predecessor, the 300 SEL 6.3 generation W109. Obtaining a reamed capacity of 6.9 liters resulted in the largest engine capacity of any passenger car produced outside the USA at the time. Presented in an understated silver over the black color combination, this example falls right in the middle of 450 SEL 6.9 production.

The W116 was the 1st Mercedes my family ever had. Dad had a 1975 450 SEL 6.9 same color with palomino tan leather interior. 1997-2003.

It was in a class of its own back in the early 70''s when first released. In fact it was so advanced and good it won the highly regarded Car of the Year Award - despite being a luxury car. This price pretty much *ignores* the premium luxury models simply to make it a somewhat fair contest between volume manufacturers and because most consumers won't be able to buy a premium luxury car anyway. But for the Mercedes W116 they made a rare exception. Too good not to be the obvious winner. I mean it wasn't just another premium luxury car it made *all other luxury cars appear 20 years old* .

@@mikatamminen2786 Good question. To my knowledge AMG didn't really officially start to release specially tuned Mercedes cars until the mid 80's. Prior to that they mostly did accessories and racing prepared cars.

Yeah the old AT were so lazy and had a long ratio. I think it would be more like 6.0 (+-0,2) sec to 100kmh with modern tires and limited slip differential, what would be very good for the weight and age
