Schwalbe Rocket Ron is light, grippy but super expensive. Got lucky finding it on discount. Pedal-wise, I ended up sticking with cheap plastic ones as my daughter hurt herself when using those with pins. A friend purchased some with a skateboard like grip tape surface. They seem to work pretty well.

a few points to share: that front plastic chain guide is essential if you dont have a narrow wide crank set, as soon as your kid goes over any sidewalk drops or bumpy tracks the chain is likely to come off. (happened my kids bike a lot even with a clutch derailleur so I bought a HUP crankset and cheap amazon narrow wide chainring.) second point is pedals, crankbrothers stamp 1's size xs. work amazing for kids, super grippy, made of nylon so way more durable than the plastic junk that gets damaged easily. You can always swap them to the next bike when they outgrow it too.

I agree on the pedals, the bike will get the nice anodised pedals from her old mtb swapped on to it when they are not on her BMX. The bash ring/guide had space for the chain to fit between the chainring and plate & was flimsy. The chain will definitely not be held on properly by it so I will see how it goes and put a DMR top chainguide on if it needs it :)

I want to upgrade the rubbish 8 Speed Box drive train on my daughters bike. The cassette is an 11-42 so would be good to keep that, but not sure on how to find a derailleur and a shifter that is easy to use. The box shifter is very hard to shift up with. Any suggestions? As for pedals, my kids seem to be fine with the metal spikes but I am a huge fan of the SDG Pro kits, not cheap but I just move them from bike to bike. The 19mm grips are amazing for small hands when it comes to reaching the brakes etc. I can't see them needing thicker grips until they are much older. Tyres, the Commencal store in town has Maxxis Minions in stock for 20" bikes, $44ea ($70 from Evo..) They usually carry the Vee 20" but no stock currently.

Sweet, I will go and get some minions from commencal next week :) I think I'm going to swap the cassette and shifter to a 9 speed shimano if the grip shift is too annoying. Don't know what pull ratio the Box rear mechs use (hope it's the same as shimano but a bit of googling says it isnt!). Cycle trading used to have lots of older drive train stuff (8 and 9 speed) not sure if they still do?

@@W1DO I ended up removing the Box and replacing with Shimano Zee 10 speed. It's lighter and nicer shifting, lost the big 42 tooth gear. The pull ratio did not match anything else so had little option. You are welcome to install it and give it a try if you want. Will be better than the twist shift.
