I have a 2006 CLK 350, bought it 16 months back and I use it for my daily commute. Absolutely in love with it, great car. Bought it with 152,000 km on the odometer and added around 16,000 so far. No issues, just regular lube/brake changes.

I had a 2003 CLK500 for a couple of years. Lovely car had it not been winters. The frameless door windows froze shut regularly, traction was poor due to rear wheel drive and the auxiliary heater failed intermittantly. The lack of traction was the main reason why I traded it away and have driven 4WD only since then.

I had the same car, same model, same colour and loved every year of my 4 years ownership. Despite trying to keep on top of the rust coming through on each wheel arch I decided to trade it in for a 2004 CLK 320 ELEGANCE. Don`t ever let anyone talk you out of a decision once you have made your mind up, it was the best move I could have made. The Grinnability factor when the V6 kicks in is fantastic and even long journeys are a pleasure and are even looked forward to. I am English to my bones, I take my hat off to the Germans, they can certainly build cars.

Cheers Colin. Shame about the rust, but a 320 is a great swap for it. If mine wasn't in such nice condition, I'd think about getting one with a bigger engine. But there's no chance right now I'm getting rid of this 200 :) They certainly can build 'em!

The clk is a great car and is still looking fresh today, I still get compliments for it from time to time and some even ask about the model since they don't know it.. I have a black clk 220 cdi with sport package from 2008 with 155000km, I try to keep her clean and well maintained.. Until now I just had normal service and tires and she runs like new.. Don't forget the transmission oil change/flush for the automatic gearboxes, very important to do them at least every 60000km or 5 years!

Love the video, I also have a W209 CLK200, mine is a 2004 car which I bought in 2008 with 8700 miles on it and now it's at just over 54,000. All the minor faults and repairs you describe on your car are familiar to me. These days my CLK is relegated to second car status but I still love owning it and driving it. I completely understand why you like getting back into it even though it's not that quick and even after driving various other interesting cars. I recently ditched the cassette deck and temperamental glovebox CD player and upgraded to wireless Pioneer Apple Car Play and bluetooth etc which is brilliant and makes the car more convenient to use in today's world (no more sticking the phone to the windscreen). I worry about 2 things with regards to ongoing ownership, one is that these 4 cylinder petrol Mercedes can develop timing chain issues I believe which are expensive, and if not caught early, very expensive because it can wreck the engine and the other is that my car has the optional Xenon headlights which can be very expensive to replace I understand. If any other CLK owners have any tips or advice on these two potential issues I'd be very interested in hearing from them. Thanks again for a great video. Interesting that there are still low mileage CLKs out there to buy.
@JJonCars
@JJonCars 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Gary. Amazing you've had it all this time. I like the idea of a different head unit with car play and whatnot, would definitely bring the car right up to date - but I also quite like the old school look of the original radio. I've just bought a bluetooth module (original one) so I can now do handsfree calls, but still got to use my phone for satnav and music. Not sure on the timing chain issues, but I know that these engines can do a lot of miles, have seen them with 200k+ on them. Making sure the oil is changed regularly I'm sure can't hurt - I'm going with every year which is about 6-7k miles.

Hey JJ thanks for the reply. I think you are right about the regular oil changes. Regarding the look of the audio, mine is an earlier facia design than yours and less attractive than yours so I was less worried about the change in look. The new Pioneer unit installed actually looks quite integrated and as if it was originally factory fit. Not sure it would work so well with your already better looking facia. I am not sure how to post you a picture but if I work out how then I will! Great to read the stories from all the other loyal CLK owners on your channel. Keep the videos coming.

@@garydavis7122 put in oil stopping pigtails onto the outlet of both camshaft adjustors. This prevents engine oil from going into ECU. My mechanics say to change engine oil every 10,000km. The O-rings that comes with new oil filter must be proper installed. The lowest O-ring, below the filter's plastic centering cone, has critical function to prevent engine oil from draining back into the crankcase when the engine is running or turn off. Drive out but not fast after the engine is started. It can take 3 to 5 minutes in cold weather for engine temperature to get to above 70 degree C. You could cut and spread out the old oil filter to look for abnormal quantity shinny metal debris. It's about 5.5 inch x 3 ft long when spread out.

my 2005 w209 clk320 has been great so far, has 150000km on it currently and ive owned it for a year. so far i think i have only spent $300aud on an A service, as well as topped up the oil one time. the m112 is known to be pretty reliable. currently my alternator bearing makes a squeaking noise sometimes so i might have to replace that if it goes, might cost me around $400-500aud. 6 months prior to when i bought it the previous owner had spent 2k on a big service, so it should be good for a while. good to know that your clk has been treating you good too :)

Those back windows are very difficult to change. Also my transmision was leaking, no big deal, already fix and my intake manifold had a problem, wich I fixed. That was expensive, around 2500 dollars. I commented on your other vid about the things you like about it. I was lucky to spot my 01 CLK 320 the day it went online in 2019 and I jumped on it. It was owned by an older lady who'd had it since new but had barely driven it. I had been looking for several months for this model and to find this with 35k km was very lucky. I have spent $$ on oil leaks, fuel pump, aircon compressor and crank position sensor, and the interior needs some attention, but it drives great and it's such a gorgeous car. Day to day it's reliable and just trundles around my local area. It comes alive on the freeway and that's where it shines. It's a real GT and you have to be careful as it increases speed before you know it and you're going way over the limit. One drawback is it's thirst in the city. Not very economical but you have to accept that and focus on it's beauty, quality and smoothness. It's a classy, elegant ride and you can't say that about too many mainstream cars out there. If you don't need a bigger vehicle and you're prepared to spend money on them now and then the Mercedes CLKs and coupes are hard to beat. Older ones especially can be absolute bargains for what you get. Cheers from Sydney.

Sounds like a lovely car! With it being an '01, is it the previous 'W208' shape? I think those 320s are really reliable engines, but they always have oil leaks! 😂 So it's good you've got them sorted. Bought a 2009 CLK 550 a couple of years ago and frankly, I haven't dared floor the accelerator pedal. The acceleration of this chariot is truly fearsome, but best of all, the suspension is old-school shocks and springs, which is a rarity in any V8 Mercedes currently. I plan to own this car until the cows come home. But for a little discoloration on the headlight lenses, you'd never guess that this car is 13 years old.

that's because you don't have an AMG, but you are right, the clk 550 or 500 is one of the only mercs from that era that have such a powerful engine with and old school reliable suspension, it's almost like a C class W203, imagine a C500 w203, well that CLK is almost that, and the reason why i write like this, i had a w202 C180 class and i kinda regret it afer getting a CLK 200K c209, it was such a versatile car

I am a year into ownership of a CLK 220 AMG sport that I rescued from an uncaring owner. He did at least have it serviced when it was due, but that was about all. New windscreen, pump for the lumbar seats, fixed the glovebox latch. For preventative measures I had the auto box serviced, changed the back axle oil, power steering fluid and coolant. Bought thermostat with housing and sensor, non original part, all I had to do was tap the bolt into the unthreaded hole in the housing that helped secure the engine cover. I serviced it even though it was done 3000 miles earlier and changed all the filters including fuel and cabin filter. Got the anti bacterial filter instead of the Mercedes cloth type. I had all 4 tyres changed and the tracking and geometry set up, spent ages on the interior. I had the Aircon serviced too. It was rewarding work, the car behaved faultlessly on a tour round Scotland on the Highland route and many other trips down south and across the country. it's been a pleasure to own. It's an 07 plate and had 60k on the clock when I bought her, she's now on 83k I made the mistake of adding a tubing box to the car, which I have used before on many of my cars and reaped great benefits from it. At first it was ok, the extra power and torque was great and the mpg was up to over 60 ! I took it off after a few months, as the car would sometimes go into limp home mode, bit I didn't get the check engine light. Switching it off and locking the car and then unlocking the car fixed the problem. I was tempted to install an android head unit, but it was going to be costly to buy extra looms for the steering wheel controls, and I do t think the sound quality would have been as good. I decided just to leave it as it is now. I hope to keep it for a very long time. The only issue that happened was one day the remote would not open the doors, but if I held the key to line up with the infra red sensor as you do to open and close the windows, then it worked. When I started the car it was fine and I noticed the radio was fuzzy. A quick Google search told me the fuse for the alarm had gone, I replaced it but it blew again. This was down to a faulty siren. I put a more powerful fuse in the box and that fixed the problem, it clearly finished off the siren, and when I eventually find it I will get it replaced, but the alarm and immobiliser still works fine, as does the remote and radio, it's just a silent alarm now. I managed to get a brand new key for 150 quid, as I only had one. The guy came out to my house and did the work in an hour. It was a better key then my original as I can now unlock just the driver's door, which I could not with the old one. My only regret is that it's black and shows up all the minor imperfections. With hindsight, and looking at yours, I would definitely buy one the same colour as yours next time. Oh ! One warning. The previous owner had the alloys refurbished and bought new wheel bolts. When I bought the car, the parking brake was rubbish. When I opened the hub up I saw that the parking brake assembly had been mangled by the wheel bolts he had bought. They were too long.
@JJonCars
@JJonCars 2 жыл бұрын
Nice! great comment Dave, thanks for watching. Funny as several of the things you mention ring true - the glovebox latch I had to fiddle around with as it wasn't closing properly. And the remote I once had an issue where it randomly stopped working, but holding it close once or twice seemed to sort it. It sounds like you started with a car that was worth saving - and I'm glad to hear you did save it! All the work you've done should future proof the car for years :) That wheel bolt thing is crazy, though the parking brake is pretty rubbish anyway I think, nearly every CLK will have had people drive off with the handbrake on many times (I know, I've done it myself plenty)
@davefrance3721
@davefrance3721 2 жыл бұрын
@@JJonCars The parking brake is a bit of a let down, having fully overhauled it with new assemblies the parking brake is vastly improved, and the shoes no longer rub, but I really have to press it down quite a way to get it to hold the car on my driveway, which has a steep slope in the first half. I don't like having the gearbox do all the work, as getting it out of park makes it give off a big cluncking sound because the weight of the car is on the parking pawl of the gearbox. But at least it's now usable, and I can use it at the traffic lights and normal parking places etc. I generally drive about in sport mode, so as to keep first gear well oiled, so that can sometimes cause the car to creep forward on a slope if you haven't applied a bit more pressure than usual. In comfort mode it's fine, as second gear doesn't have as much pull when stationary. Sport mode behaves the same as comfort when driving with a light foot, and where I live it's better for the car as it's quite hilly and rural. I find that as I take off in certain places in comfort mode and second gear, the car will downshift after a second or so, but I use comfort mode on long trips and in town.

I'm glad I found this video this morning. Shame on me for not subscribing before! I am about to take my CLK320 to a new, to me, independent mechanic. My favorite mechanic of almost thirty years has retired (how dare he!). This will be interesting as specialist shops in Maine are few and far between. This shop is about 40 miles from where I live and this visit will primarily be for the annual state road inspection, pulling codes and perhaps replacing the crank position sensor as I have lately had a couple of warning signs that the CPS is about to fail. (a bit of stuttering when stopping for a traffic light or to turn a hard corner near the grocery store). This visit to the shop will also establish some other base lines. I'm going to begin a fluid replacement in this car because it's really due according to the previous service records I obtained for the car from Mercedes Benz and Carfax. First of all will be replacement of the valve cover gaskets which are leaking. That will be quite expensive (the Mercedes Benz dealer quoted me $1400!) and I may opt to get them changed at this new shop because it is 100 miles closer to my home. I will tell you that I have sold the other vehicle in the house, my cherished older GMC 4X4 truck. It was getting very rusty and I was told it would not pass state inspection this coming November. The estimate to repair and repaint was like buying it all over again, so I sold it to a young fellow who can do all the repair work himself. Now I must find a suitable replacement vehicle and in this economy that will prove a very difficult task. However I am so pleased with the CLK that I am looking for an E-class station wagon ("Estate" to you!). An 2006-2008 E-class wagon here, with around 100,000 miles will cost around $8-10,000. The truck is to find one that is one or two owner vehicles that has been maintained strictly according to Mercedes instructions and the car must have spent most of its life where there isn't a lot of brine poured on the road for ice control in winter. The one I seek will have the same engine and transmission the CLK has as that is more than adequate, and of course, 4Matic all wheel drive. If I find one, I'll let you know.

Awesome, thanks for subscribing Roger! I've heard the 320 can be a bit leaky, but is otherwise a very solid, reliable engine. My CLK has had some issues. For one, i managed to break the handbrake by using too long lug bolts when i changed the tires. (we use 2 sets, summer and winter) Needs new summer tires, but shouldn't be too expensive. It also needs a new combo stalk because the blinker doesn't stay up or down most of the time. Needs a new windshield because one of the previous owners used duct tape to fix the passenger side wiper blade in place, and it has scratched up the glass. Windshield washer only sprays from the driver side nozzle, and only after pressing the button multiple times. Passenger side door lock has the bouncing issue, only locks randomly. Thankfully i can fix most of these with help from a friend. Inside trim has some imperfections, driver side rear window switch is broken, and a tab from the center console. Apart from those it has been very reliable so far, though i've only had it for 2 months. I'm planning to do a couple of mods: bi-xenon headlights, maybe LED taillights, and a new radio.

How many kms/miles does your CLK have? (and what engine?) Like you say, they are not too serious issues so you can get them done and you'll have a nice sorted CLK :) I get the feeling that the combo stalk is a common problem as I'm sure I've seen other people who need to replace it.

I really like the way the wheels match your car. I have the AMG wheels as standard and I think after seeing yours I prefer them to mine. I'm quite lucky regarding the tyres, as my mate will do them at cost price for me, so I can get the 255 40 18 tyres on the front for about 100 quid a piece and the 285 35 18 tyres on the rear for 120 a piece. Comfort isn't too bad, but the wheels do suffer from pot hole damage easily. He got me the vented / grooved disks and the pads for a shade under 200 quid. Regarding your gearbox leak, I'm glad I did have my gearbox serviced when I bought it and realised the car was a keeper, as they told me it had a slight leak on the sump. The sump and filter was replaced as part of the service, the old oil wasn't too bad, slightly tanned in colour and it didn't have that burnt acrid smell. The cost was 200 for the service. The car had about 65 k on the clock by then. It was more a precautionary measure, as the car was 14 years old back then and having 14 year old oil in the box didn't seem like a good idea to me, being the AMG spec it still has the 5 speed gearbox which Mercedes say is sealed for life, unlike the 7 speed box introduced that year which is now recommended to have the oil changed at about 40 to 60k
@JJonCars

I do like the wheels on mine, only thing is, they're harder to clean and the lower profile makes the ride quiet hard. I've watched enough High Peak Autos to know it's always worth servicing the automatic gearbox :) I've got history of mine being done in 2018 so lots of years left. 'Sealed for life' doesn't make sense does it!
@davefrance3721
@davefrance3721 2 жыл бұрын
@@JJonCars Sealed for life I assume is going to mean about 60 to 100k, by which time the car is well out of warranty and probably on its second or even 3rd owner. My friend worked in the petro chemical industry and we had conversations about oil molecular chains breaking down. So for me it made sense to change all the oils. Diff oil and power steering oil was not cheap, but at least I know it's done now. I did notice a slight difference in the gearbox after the service, but I had reset it too using the old ignition key and throttle peddle sequence trick. SAAB gearboxes were also sealed for life, back in the day of the older non electronic gearboxes. It was not recommended to change the oil in those (The old Dexron 3 type oil) as it had very aggressive cleaning properties and could break down the dirt compacted in the seals and cause them to fail. So it was a gearbox out job and replace all the seals and torque converter seals. I had a lot of SAAB'S before switching to Mercedes with a brief and painful affair with a Jaguar XF-S In between. I did want to buy an SLK but my wife said No ! The CLK coupe turned out to be the better move in retrospect . So I have to give her that one. 😂

All the youngsters in city are asking when I will be selling it. When I bought, it had 170 000km, now is 245 000km. Two times changed tires, 255 and 225 and that is the main expense...1200€ total. Changed brakes, oil, filters, engine and transmission mounts... total maintenance for all this time is around 500€. I assumed the CLK was a cruiser, but not that much. Interesting, Dennis. I personally quite like the steering on the CLK - you're right that it doesn't feel like a sports car, and it is quite heavy. But I enjoy driving it through the sweeping A roads we have around here. It's pretty good as a cruiser, though the sports suspension I do find quite firm. I've heard that the manual gearboxes are to avoid - almost all of them come with automatics (which suit them really well).

Hey! Love the vids! 2 questions too. What do you use to archive all your costs and keep track of all that, would really like to do the same. And also what do you think, is it a really smooth drive? @JJonCars
@JJonCars 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :) I would recommend Fuelio app (android or apple) to log fuel and all costs - fuel.io/ But I also just keep a good old spreadsheet too! Well - you're right, it is quite a firm ride. So it can be a bit jarring over potholes, with the sports suspension and 18" wheels. But - the car is quiet, it's refined, the seats are comfortable, the auto gearbox is smooth and on the motorway and smoother roads it is a reasonable ride too. First thing I'd say is, if you really don't like the ride and you have 18" wheels is try different wheels, maybe 16 or 17", as that can make quite the difference. But you've got to make sure that the new wheels clear the sports brake callipers and are the right fitment for your car :)

I have one of these a 2008 CLK 200 really like these cars but I have a niggling problem, sometimes when I go to start the car I turn the key and nothing happens. All the lights come on as normal but nothing from the engine, this can happen for a couple of times then the it starts as normal, I have had in for diagnostics a couple of times but nothing shows up, very puzzling. Anybody have any suggestions?

That's weird. I guess only thing that I can think off the top of my head is, is the battery OK? I'm guessing it is if it's been in for diagnostics. Otherwise, hopefully someone else will know...

Does it sometimes stall while the engine is running idle? I've had that same ignition problem from time to time and couldn't figure it out until now, seems my Engine Control Module is faulty. The EMC is ceirtainly causing the stalling and unstable RPM at idle occasionaly, however I'm thinking it may be causing the ignition fails as well. Just an idea to check out really, I've ordered a new EMC a few days ago and will see if it fixes the ignition problems as well. :)

I don’t consider £1000 p/a on repairs a good deal on a quality car….

@@JJonCarsI was looking for CLK here in Moscow, the best you can buy for 8000$ would be with over 200.000km, with bunch of issues (engine chains as a common) and after a few body repairs. Car like yours would start from $17-18k. So feels a little envy 😁😁 Very nice car anyway, congrats and good luck with her!
