Canoe The North

Canoe The North

Күн бұрын

At the end of the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to canoe across one of Ontario's premier canoeing destinations.... Wabakimi.
I had previously visited Wabakimi on a fly in fishing trip, but this would be my first time paddling through this enormous park. With millions of acres to explore, you could spend a lifetime traveling this land and not even scratch the surface.
For this trip, I focused on a few specific locations on the eastern side. These locations had been on my bucket list for years!
Wendall Beckwiths’ cabins in the heart of Wabakimi were a top priority. This eccentric scientist moved to Wabakimi in the 1960's and believed Whitewater Lake to be the "centre of the universe". I had heard the cabins were rapidly deteriorating, so I wanted to see what remained before it’s too late.
I also took time to paddle the incredible Cliff Lake, which is possibly the most beautiful lake I've ever paddled in Ontario! There must be a couple hundred pictographs along the sheer granite walls of this iconic wilderness lake!
This was an amazing trip where everything seemed to go my way, including the northern lights (aurora borealis) coming out to light up the night sky on two separate evenings.
Paddling though Wabakimi was a very special experience for me and I'm in the process of planning another bigger, longer trip though this immense wilderness in 2023. I hope you enjoy the video.
I also wanted to make a mention of "Wabakimi Canoe and Fishing Outfitters". Bruce, Margaret, and Lindsey were all extremely easy to deal with, including a last minute shuttle reservation and some inside information about the park. If you are considering heading to Wabakimi next year I would recommend talking to Bruce and the team as they certainly offer some great services and Im sure could make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

So many people seem to want to talk about gear and even KZbinrs who do trip videos and gear videos mention sometimes the gear videos get the most views. The problem for me is I can’t say a gear video captures my imagination or inspires me like a video that tells a story and Keenan tells a great story and has figured out how to bring us along without wondering what tarp he uses.

I’m a praying person…your first night of northern light caused me to pray out loud to the One who created all of this beauty. Spectacular! BTW, the still shot of the canoe broadside in the light of the aurora borealis is unmatched, you must make prints and get that into the gift shops and also sell from your website…..seriously. Keenan and Betty, paddling along, Their canoe gliding, their spirits strong. The sun is high, the water calm, A perfect day, no cause for alarm. The lake is wide, the sky so blue, A peaceful scene, serene and true. But then, what's this? A sight so rare, A caribou swimming, without a care. Keenan stares in wonder, Betty too, As the caribou swims, right on through. With antlers strong, and fur so brown, The caribou swims, without a frown. Keenan watches, his heart aglow, As the caribou swims, to and fro. Betty barks, her tail a-wag, She's happy too, it's clear to tag. The caribou swims, then reaches shore, And trots away, with grace galore. Keenan and Betty, their journey renewed, With memories made, and love imbued. For Keenan and Betty, this day was grand, With nature's wonders, at their command. And the caribou, oh what a sight, Forever a part, of this voyage's light.

This is an interesting example of how the built environment (the 3 cabins) adds to the experience of a remote, wild place. In the US, the philosophy has been to eliminate signs of the modern hand but I think they add touch points to the history of a place. Recently, I think the National Park Service has reconsidered their old position. Terrific video. Thank you.

Thanks James. That’s interesting to hear. I wish that our park staff had saved the first could of cabins. I agree that building like this can certainly add to the experience and does not take away from the park in any way. Thanks very much for the comment.

Compelling scenery, solitude on a grand scale, wildlife and celestial spectacles - what more could you ask for? Another engrossing and deeply satisfying recount of an adventurous journey! Too many unique scenes to comment on them all, but one that particularly caught my eye was green treed glade briefly seen during the portage into Whitewater Lake; a visual stunner! I can see myself stopping for at least 1/2 hour there to soak it up and take a few dozen photos! Of course the warm sunsets, strikingly bold aurora, and the calm reverent exploration of the pictographs on Cliff Lake were also memorable.... I could go on... I have been on your trip many times and stopped by and visited with Wendell and left him with some fresh food. I didn’t take videos but many slides. Wabakimi is a beautiful lake and a trip further up the Ogoki to the Palisades is also wonderful. Enjoyed memories with you. Thank you.

As always Incredibly great, your pictures and impressions !! Less than 20 years ago, in commercials with gigantic financial budgets, from big tabback companies with M... for example, in the opening credits in the cinema, they weren't made nearly as well as your films!
