In Japan (with exceptions of areas severely hit during March 11, 2011 Tohoku Region Earthquake which the shutoff was done on March 2012), it's just a white-on-blue notice of end of analogue broadcast after their digital switchover, reminding the viewers who used analogue tv to contact Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication for assistance. The same case for UK, especially BBC, where it display notice for analogue viewers to switch to digital before it completely shutoff.

Here in the US, on some channels they had analog nightlight service, which basically showed the user what to do and how to set up a converter box and get a coupon on how to purchase one

​@@shenghe9876 It is considered digital 16:9, but the physical channel for over-the-air viewers had returned to VHF channel 7. UHF channel 45 was moved to WMUN-CD, which operated on the same virtual channels before their demise in 2017.

@@TheLightingPersonWNET was already using an out-of core RF on UHF channel 61 from 1998-2009. WABC-DT on the other hand, was using in in-core RF at the time, in this case UHF 45 moved to WMUN-CD. Coincidentally, they had elected that channel as their backup channel if interference could not be solved. UHF 45 was at 219 kW at that time, but VHF 7 is now at 34 kW. Both stations will move to One World Trade Center. The former moved just a few years ago. The latter has a construction permit for 506 m HAAT.

On digital TV, the signal should go out and you would need to rescan your TV. You can see the digital TV in the background displaying "no signal".

It would have been best if UHF channel 45 was used as a translator of WABC-TV, like what KRCR-TV had to do after the shutdown. KRCR will move to UHF channel 15 at 1,000 kW. KGO-TV used UHF channel 24 at 561 kW, but returned to VHF channel 7 until 2020, in which that channel moved to VHF channel 12 at 47 kW. KGO continues to use UHF channel 35 as its translator from San Jose at Mount Allison at 12.1 kW. WLS-TV in Chicago was out-of-core on UHF channel 52, but had no choice but to return to UHF channel 44 due to severe interference with WOOD-TV. WLS moved to channel 22 in 2019, with the station broadcasting at 1,000 kW at the Willis Tower. This was similar to another ABC owned TV station in Fresno, California, but that station is at a slightly lower power.

Digital tv is supposed to be better. Unfortunately, the supposed story of why the analog to digital transition happened is because that analog over the air tv takes up too much frequency space per channel, and cellular service providers needed some space.
