They bought these because they were the only ones available that could fit inside the rotary dumpers and plant ore loading facilities that they use that could be done quickly. Iron ore demand is up. Lots of GEs out there but all with standard-dimension cabs that are three inches too wide and an inch and a half too high at the roof which would have required custom cab rebuilds. The SD70Acu ex-BHP units that they obtained were bought for that same reason, dimensional compatibility with existing infrastructure. Worked at QNS&L for 28 years so I know the limitations.

Steve..Are you still there? I know a lot of my former employees bailed when they thought it was closing.. Just a shell of what it use to be..but at least Wabtec took over..

QNS&L can get ES44ACI locomotives like those that MRS and RUMO are getting in Brazil. They would fit right into the railroad’s clearance diagram.
