I live in Jacksonville Florida and endured the tremendous rain and wind that took out power utility company said to 180 thousand. Not much compared to other saddened part of the state and Georgia especially Atlanta and then the Carolinas. Our street was out for around 10 hours. Never heard howling wind b4. Be fine if I never do again. Jacksonville doesn't seem to get the worst of it like the Gulf Coast or Miami or the Keys. But Hurricane Helene spent some time here. One newscaster said the name Helene will probably be retired. The media appeared surprised as were, I think a lot of people. I knew the tropical storm was about to be over in my area when the birds started chirping. Tropical storms absolutely do major damage regardless of their inane sounding name. Nothing to see here. Move along. Well, that storm last night into nearly noon today GOT my attention. And I thought living on the beach would be so cool. Not anymore. And I am 5 miles from the beach. Buying a generator this coming week. But I still like Florida over Seattle, NY, NJ, Canada, Oregon, California, Idaho, and Eastern Washington. (50 miles east of Seattle on Interstate 90 you climb ftom 500 feet above sea level to 3000 feet at Snoqualmie Falls. Then you drop down 500 feet to 2500 feet and it is all desert. All the way to Idaho. My prayers and thanks to the first responders. My prayers to the families who lost loved ones. My prayers to those who now look at rebuilding. God bless you all and God bless you all who laboured through my post.✝️🙏❤

Like any company, insurance companies are in business to make money. They can’t make money if claims are massive. But it’s the American way. It’s a problem that involves increasing climate change, a lot of people moving to the south for warmer weather, and to some extent people living too close to water. This one nailed people inland too but not as bad as those near water. Our concept of insurance as a profit enterprise has to change too. Our behavior should change in many ways.

I live in Columbia south Carolina. It was pretty bad. Of course my work made us come on just for the power to go out. I almost died 3 times on the highway. Trees down everywhere power out. @desirosethorne4429Ай бұрын
I live in Lexington and it was pretty bad here too. I've lived in this state all of my life (23 years) and I think this was the worst tropical storm/hurricane I've been in so far. A lot of the times they've been just barely touching us but the way that the storm tracked just made it hit us with a sledgehammer. The tree in our backyard stood for over 20 years. This morning, it fell over and destroyed the neighbor's fence and was pretty much uprooted from the ground. It hit the side of my house and knocked down the gutters. Luckily it didn't damage the house itself. I climbed that tree as a kid and loved to sit underneath its branches to read a book but now it's gone. I'm gonna miss that tree. I think the soil was too oversaturated and the roots were shallow. We've been through winds upwards to 70 before and it was fine but I think it's because the wind was sustained for so long.
@runnergo1398Ай бұрын

@@desirosethorne4429 That is so sad. I'm a little north of Atlanta and somehow had no damage or flooding that affected our house, not even a power outage longer than 10 seconds. I think that was because the western side of the eyewall is what ended up coming over us. Yes, that's most likely what cause the tree to fall. At my house, we got 11" of rain over less than 48 hours, and if the winds got any higher than they did (about 25-45 mph), we would've had much worse damage.

We moved again but to a small town within Clark County, NV (the same county that Vegas is in) in 2028 for my then-husband's job. In 2019, Vegas and where I live now experienced an aftershock. The epicenter was in Southern CA. No matter where one lives=There's some kind of natural disaster that you have to deal with (I'm originally from IL & grew up near a tornado alley).

The reasons why so many where caught off guard Is they have this mindset like you do that it’s just coastal areas. This hurricane was a monster it plowed through Georgia and Tennessee. My daughter lives in south Florida and she hardly got anything. So be aware , watch the path of the storm. With a hurricane you have a lot of time to prepare.
