Better to do both to appeal to both sides. A grounded take makes the kaiju feel more unique in a sense that these prehistoric beast exist in a world identical to our own but the fantastical routes allow for more creativity when you don't have realism limiting your options. The MV works for it's versatility. Not because of sticking to 1 note like a 1 trick pony. Just like godzilla's whole character. If godzilla is versatile and has range, so can any universe he exist in.
@steven_l619
@steven_l619 10 ай бұрын
The problem with the MV is the fact it has no ground to stand on it started with realism and should stay in that realm because that's where it started. You can add fantasy elements as you go but it needs to stay cohesive to the universe it started in, the problem is whoever is snorting cocaine in the writers room and going "fuck it make it an MCU movie" where it devolves into a child smashing kiju toys together and characters that basically say "are we funny? Is this funny? No. Ok we'll keep doing childish humor." The MV is basically going more and more goofy and it has no realism anymore or any serious tone, witch is making it a bad franchise weather you enjoy it or not and that will be it's downfall.

@@steven_l619 Buddy the MV had no rule that says it should of stayed grounded. Saying it should of stayed grounded is the same as saying *The whole franchise should be minus 1 and gojira cause both are grounded* so how about not applying your own bias to the equation and calling it fact?. G14 was grounded but it's biggest issue was the writing which is a ACTUAL issue the MV needs to tackle. Being serious/grounded isn't a excuse for bad writing. The setting is hardly a issue when monarch/skull island were grounded and gxk isn't. Showing the MV can go back and forth between settings whenever it wants to. Having the MV remain the same tone and style for every movie will get old and stale extremely quickly. This is why depending on who's in charge for each entry, some will be grounded or fantastical or campy or serious. Bad writing is a issue found across the WHOLE spectrum. That's the biggest issue. Following your logic, if a G film is dark that must mean someone in the writer's room was saying *Let's make this movie for wannabe emos/edgelords* when there's many kaiju films, both inside and outside the franchise that had a balanced lighthearted/serious tone (vs mechagodzilla 2/gamera the brave) that had well written characters. Gamera the brave wasn't as dark as g14 and that film STILL had the emotional story g14 lacked. The MV works in variety. Not appealing to 1 group and ignoring the other.

Seriously, I don't understand the hate for the human characters in that film. A couple of them were annoying sure. But overall, it had a central story with characters going on a journey - and we're not just there to deliver plot information. It was very much dealing, with concepts of faith and loss, as well as our relationship to nature. I like the 2014 film, but let's be honest - when Joe (Bryan Cranston's character) died in the film, almost all emotional weight of the story was taken out of its sails. his son Ford was basically a cardboard cutout with very little emotions which made it hard to be invested in him. We didn't see him spend much time with his wife, which again made it difficult to care about them. Meanwhile, in 2019, I was way more invested in the family story.

My issue isn’t that they’re doing the fun and wacky tone, the issue I have is they are doing it within the same universe. Imagine if, in the sequel to Minus One, Toho randomly decided to make the tone goofy and over the top within the same world and Godzilla that was in Minus one. That’s how it feels seeing the 2014 version shift into this more campy direction. Nothing wrong with variety but it’d be less jarring for fans if there was a separate series for that tone.

You can be realistic AND fun at the same time. But my thing is if the monsters are animated in an unrealistic way, such as these 600 foot tall creatures moving faster than things that size would and/or could move, it sucks out the fun for me. Because if you're not taking anything about your story (including your story world) seriously, it becomes distracting and therefore, shatters your suspension of disbelief. That's why the 2014 _Godzilla_ and _Kong: Skull Island_ have the best animated fights.

Of course that's only my opinion, so anybody feel free to disagree if you want (Respectfully at least!). But I'm rooting 100% for the grounded side. But before reading the rest, if you have a great time with the new movies, I'm genuinely happy for you and hope you will continue to have a great time watching these movies. But this universe is just not for me anymore. - When I saw Godzilla 2014, I absolutely loved this movie. The atmosphere, the likeable characters, and "strangely" the fact that it was a human-scale story rather than a kaiju-scale story. It made the Kaijus so much more intimidating, I was able to realize how gigantic they were and be in awe. The atmosphere was dark, and we didn't see much the kaijus in the movie actually, which made scenes with them much more impressive and satisfying. The movie was really immersive, grounded. And I know there is arguments to say that it's not realistic in the first place, Godzilla just can't exist in our world because of simple physics, I know that. But a movie doesn't need to be fully realistic on every aspect to feel immersive. I was simply thinking "That's a really good movie", and I still absolutely love that movie. - Kong Skull Island, can't say much about it, I honestly don't like this one. I liked certain scenes of it, but I generaly found the movie absolutely boring af. It was immersive enough, but not really interesting for me. But I'm not a big fan of Kong, so it didn't helped. I don't say it's a bad movie in all mean, I just disliked it that's all. - King Of The Monsters, I had a great time seing it, the scenes were extremely impressive and powerful/overpowered, but the movie felt way less immersive for me than the first one. The characters were not really interesting, less likeable, and sometimes extremely dumb (Even if we can be dumb in reality, that was a high level in that one XD). I liked it, but that's it. - Godzilla Vs Kong, it was probably this movie that started to destroy my hype. Literaly the only thing I can remember me saying after watching the movie is "Ok. That was kinda fun I guess..". I was actually releaved that the movie was finally ended when I lived, which is not a good sign for obvious reasons lol. - I didn't watched yet the series Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters, but I'll try watching it when I have time for it. - And for the trailer of Godzilla x Kong, my hype was definitely destroyed. I just had "Feeling = 0" for that. I even found it cringe, and I don't even know if I will see this movie or not. Maybe at least for pure curiosity and give it the benefit of the doubt. But I think I'm gonna have a good time honestly. So yeah, I went from "I absolutely love this movie!" to "Don't know if I want to inflict me this just out of curiosity...".

I much prefer a grounded and realistic tone, because it’s what the Monsterverse was aiming for from the beginning. Now obviously adding a more fun aspects is okay, but it’s gotten to the point where the Monsterverse doesn’t know what it wants to be, because there has been a new director every single time except this one. At this point it just feels like fan service, which is fine but when it’s abused it wastes a lot of potential for future films. Although I have accepted that this is the direction the Monsterverse is taking. RIP to the realistic tone of the Monsterverse (2014-2017)

Grounded is the better term. Godzilla is inherently unrealistic but G14 made an effort to make him grounded and SOMEWHAT reasonable to what he might be in real life. KOTM kept one foot in grounding the monsters and the other in the more fantastical but it struck a decent balance. GvK and GxK completely abandoned it and it was honestly to their detriment. It doesn’t help that we have a different director for each movie and when we finally settled on one, it’s the weakest director of the 4. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for 300 ft tall monsters to feel like giant monsters and not video game characters.

I loved Kotm because it was the perfect middle ground. If they had simply stayed with that feel and actually worked on the characters instead of trying to drown them out with kaiju slop is what would have made the MonsterVerse so much better. I do think that the MonsterVerse’s correct path would have been to just keep it like it was in 2014, but seeing the vibrancy and emotion that Michael Dougherty brought to the MonsterVerse, and how he truly brought Godzilla’s most classic characters to life like we’ve never seen before is just something that I cannot go without, and I just hope they bring Dougherty back so he can continue his feel of the MonsterVerse and actually fix the human characters.

*Godzilla 2014 is the best Monsterverse movie and by far* The new Godzilla movies are very good, I don't dislike them at all but I have to admit that the previous ones, the feeling of scale and realism was extremely good for me. For me the best monsterverse movie is without a doubt Godzilla 2014. I still remember my reaction when Godzilla was shown for the first time at the airport. That shot when they show Godzilla's foot....HOLY SHIT MAN. I expected Godzilla to be big but not to this point. And all of this is thanks to the incredible mastery that they have put behind each shot since many of the shots are made from the point of view of humans, thus making Godzilla seem even much bigger than he already is, something that the new movies have been missing. I'm not saying they're bad, but the sense of scale of Godzilla is not at all what it was before. That was also thanks to the fact that Godzilla's movement and animation at the time was slower, heavier, making it much more realistic. I still remember that every muscle of Godzilla seemed like he had to overexert himself to punch the MUTOS's. it was amazing

People will complain anyways just like 2014 and 2019. 2014 was pretty boring most of the time and even cut away from the fights. The monsters are always the best part and it helps they added the animalistic part, they act like giant animals in a giant ecosystem (earth). “It’s not realistic” is stupid and it just sounds like snobs wanting everything to be like shin, the original, or minus one when we can have both. It should be more not one thing as long as it’s done well They can also find a perfect balance with the humans and monsters and some realism like skull island again and GvK almost hit that spot

Both fun and realistic is the best. The best example is pacific rim which thankfully, never got a sequel

The directors did the best for pacific rim, a sequel would be disastrous in todays era of film!
