In 2014 the Americans took another crack at Godzilla. This time it worked. The Monsterverse isn't the deepest series, but I like it. I just like giant monsters. You like giant monsters. Chick like giant monsters.

One of my favorite things about Godzilla 2014 is the lack of a background soundtrack in many scenes. It added soo much more immersion to my experience. The airport Godzilla reveal, the Muto casually chatting it up with each other while skyscrapers collapse around them to the amazing Muto scene with the soldiers on the train tracks. All that stuff in IMAX completely knocked my socks off!

I would strongly argue that MUTO is probably one of the best designs in the series and I'm surprised it doesn't get more love. They really understood the assignment of making something that feels new and old at the same time. For instance, MUTO has the now cliche "Cloverfield legs" that all JJ Abrams movies have and is basically a staple of modern movie monsters... BUT it also has very large and simple geometric shapes that are also akin to Space Gyaos from the Gamera movie series and then the eyes look like Gigan's eyes. To top it off, the proportions and designs of MUTO legs and Torso are... the same as those of a man in a suit walking on short stilts. It's just brilliant that they made it feel new, old, and like a man in a suit but not too much like a man in a suit. It just works on every level.

the sound design for mutos in 2014 Godzilla is honestly bone-chilling. those clicking noises and the total alien creaking/groaning of a creature the size of a small mountain is top notch stuff. if the visuals had been better overall when it came to the nighttime scenes and the main character had better motivations...it would be such a legendary movie.

I must admit that my love for this movie is maybe 80% because I loved the MUTOS. They were such a unique and unheard of design for 12 year old me at the time. Bizarre and out there monster designs are what got me into spec evo, and the MUTO lifecycle compounds that further. They were unique in that they were great villains for Godzilla to kill without remorse, and still felt like animals, because they were parasites. Monsterverse has managed to make their villain monsters still seem so weirdly natural in the craziness because they exploit that real but still bad category. Ghidorah and the skull crawlers in Kong are invasive species, which makes their defeat less sad, while still making them feel strangely grounded in premise.

The parachute drop scene is a work of art. The muted audio, the sense of descending into a city that's essentially turned into an apocalyptic landscape in real time, the deliberately understated presence of Godzilla amidst the smoke and chaos... it's basically the best scene in the entire film for me. It’s crazy and awesome to me as a longtime Godzilla fan how well the Monsterverse has done for itself, and how much it’s grown. It quite literally saved the franchise from going under the knife by Toho, and its success got them to start making their own movies again, as well as simply breathing new life into the series at large. Without the Monsterverse, we genuinely wouldn’t have gotten the likes of Shin, Minus One, the Tokusatsu short anniversary films, the anime films, Singular Point etc. Toho are publicly extremely happy with the MV, and are just as involved with it as Legendary are. It’s a joint project that has served both entities incredibly well, and it’s amazing to see it flourishing still after 10 years. Hell, we’ve gotten more content from the Monsterverse than we ever did from the DCEU. As 2023 showed, it’s a DAMN good time to be a Godzilla and Kaiju fanatic.

I guess it's neat to hear things are friendly between the japan side of Godzilla movies. It's not really a conundrum as to why Shin and Minus One are so regarded beyond just fans of the Kaiju genre, but that doesn't mean the Monsterverse didn't have its own appeal. They're not really deep, and despite the attempts the human drama usually falls flat (only made worse in contrast with Minus One), but they do a much better job of representing the spirit of Godzilla and what makes him cool than the mess that was Roland Emerich's interpretaton of the lizard. 2014 specifically does a good job with the anticipation and intimidation of Godzilla, and helped earn back the image of him that was lost for a while after the last american G film.

I think the MV's advantage is because it hasn't been shoving content after content in your face over a short period, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and most of the stuff released had heart and fun put into them at varying degrees. Here's my ranking for the Monsterverse visual content released so far. 1) King of the Monsters. 2) Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. 3)Kong: Skull Island. 4)Godzilla vs Kong. 5) Skull Island Netflix show. 6) Godzilla 2014.

Yeah same here - maybe I’m just not a monster verse fan, but this movie felt the most believable to me. It had the best soundtrack, best visuals, and to me the best action as well. It wasn’t some OTT fight scene which took me out the action, or some questionable physics or CGI. It just felt like a v good action movie. The kong film was also pretty damn good but the rest of the Godzilla films, just don’t live up to the original to me.

I find it so strange how legendary made the mutos, a fully original kaiju, made them the main focus of 2014, and then barely ever mentioned them again. Even the monarch show, which is supposed to be a follow-up to the events of 2014, never mentions them by name once, only showing them in recycled 2014 footage alongside godzilla. Like, one of them rampaged across the western united states, but everyone only talks about godzilla? It felt like they were ashamed of the mutos, which sucks because I genuinely think they're one of the coolest kaiju designs ever made. I hope they eventually come back in some other media; I feel like they could become a household name.
@BlaaankOwl
@BlaaankOwl 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, even their direct relationship to Godzilla gets glossed over in the later movies and shows. _Godzilla 2014_ makes it very clear that the MUTOs were parasites who used Godzilla’s species as hosts, and that this is the core reason why they and Godzilla have it in for each other. But come _King of the Monsters_ in 2019, and there’s a MUTO bowing down to Godzilla with all the other Titans that show up after he does the Alpha Titan call, as if there’s nothing special about it. Godzilla and a MUTO were supposed to have a biological imperative to try and kill one another, and yet it’s *Kong* that Godzilla has an ancient ancestral rivalry with? Also, another point as to how Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in particular neglects the MUTOs: early on in the show, Shaw says that every Titan he’s ever seen is unique, a sui generis entity. This is despite the fact that the show is set after the events of _Godzilla 2014,_ where the whole world got a pretty good look at the MUTOs, two distinct Titans that belonged to the exact same species (albeit of different sexes). I mean, we literally get to see him watching news coverage of the MUTO attack in Hawaii in a flashback, and the Battle of San Francisco (“G-Day”) is repeatedly referenced by half the characters in the show.

I can kind of see this but in a slightly different order from the original series. 2014 was similar to the original film by bringing a sense of ominous fear. Skull Island and King of the Monsters match the serious but fun energy of the Heisei era. And GvK went more the goofy Showa route. I suspect GxK will follow Millennium era given the pink dorsal scales and over the top monster fighting teased in the trailer. 😂

I hope you cover Shin Godzilla at some point. That movie was really good, and contrary to what you might expect from a Godzilla movie, was actually made so much more interesting with its focus on the human side of things, and how humanity responded to Godzilla's emergence. I was admittedly a teensy bit bored on my first watching, as I kind of felt like there wasn't enough Godzilla in a Godzilla movie, but having learned more about it, it's actually pretty damn good for what it's trying to do. As I understand it, it was sorta meant to be commentary on the response to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, and how ineffectual the Japanese government was in responding to something that otherwise should have been fairly straightforward. Godzilla spends most of the movie just passively plodding along through the city while the government is mired in red tape and is slow to respond, and only really starts to fight back seriously towards the end of the movie, when the military starts sending squadrons of attack helicopters and bombers with JDAMs after him. Even until the very end, it's not really clear what Godzilla is even trying to do, and it paints this picture of a government really struggling to even respond to this giant lumbering _animal_ that's wandered into a city, and doesn't seem to have any real goals or ill-intent until he's been attacked multiple times. He's just a giant lizard boi, and wanted to see what the little monkey peeps are doing, so he comes out of the water, and immediately gets attacked by the humans (understandable though, considering how dangerous he actually is). It's like if a black bear was the size of a mountain, and wandered into a city looking for a mountain sized garbage can to tear open.

Well, I would argue that the current Toho films are not apart of a single franchise as Cody had put it in his video. They’re just stand alone movies and projects that just happen to feature the same character, but wildly different takes on it. The Reiwa era (that’s what the fans usually refer to it as) is the least connected series or era of the “Godzilla” series in Japan 🇯🇵. They’re really just a test bed where Toho allows filmmakers from the outside to experiment with the character, and try different things with him. Sometimes these experiments work, sometimes they don’t. I won’t tell you which I thought worked and which ones didn’t. But, they’re always trying to do something new and different with the character and his mythology than what has been done before in the previous “Godzilla” films. That’s what makes the Reiwa era different from the Showa era, the Heisei era, and even the Millennium era of Toho “Godzilla” films.

I rank Godzilla 2014 up with Superman Returns for a movie where the first teaser is better than the whole movie. I vividly remember sitting in a theater. Watching these soldiers look freaked as they drop through the clouds. Red smoke trailing behind them. The choir building as it's revealed the city they are dropping into looks like hell itself. My favorite part of the movie is how they made the kaiju actually feel like real animals, Godzilla wasn't the good guy and the MUTOs the bad guys, it was just a bunch of animals doing their thing while being absurdly massive, which is why this is still my favorite monsterverse movie to this day. It’s not the MCU or DCEU failing in the Movie theaters, it’s the entire movie theater model that is failing. This is because the causal audience (the actual drivers of box office successes), got a real taste of watching stuff at home during Covid 19, and two years later many decided they liked watching content at home more. Don’t believe me, look up how many movies actually made a profit in 2023 (it’s a very low number). Only highly anticipated movies (such as Deadpool 3 or Dune Part two) are likely to make a profit in the box office these days.

Fun fact: godzilla technically started the cinematic universe trend with the showa films. Godzilla(1954-1964), rodan(1956), Mothra(1961-1964) had been building up to ghidorah the 3 headed monster (1964). Naturally, nostalgia plays a big role but I'd be lying if I said that was the only reason. Each of the monsterverse movies excel in one aspect to magnificent effect and for G 2014 it was clearly aesthetics. Gareth Edwards' way with grittyness and scale is hard to overstate, even though I have no issue with the Sci-fi and batshit action we're getting for the monsterverse a part of me still wishes we had gotten more instalments with this grounded more disaster movie esc approach. I mean, hell, could you imagine what King Ghidorah would have been like in Gareth's style of directing, the sheer presence he would have given that three headed abomination as it touched down with whole hurricane following it.

I really do miss being in that perspective but the others do at least has Godzilla in the movie more than 15 minutes and actually lets you see some fights. Plus I do like the premise of the titans and Godzilla being a literal force of nature/ old man tired of everyone’s shit. It lessons the nuclear message but it does feel nice to have this natural force that is humans just can’t fully comprehend or compete with usually.

I absolutely love this movie. The atmosphere and the cinematography are incredible. The human subplot is whatever but if it was just two hours of Godzilla and the MUTOs fighting you wouldn't feel any stakes. Ford Brody isn't very exciting, I don't think they wanted him to distract from the monsters too much, but he is trying to save his wife and son which most everyone can relate to. I didn't mind them killing off Bryan Cranston 30 minutes in. It tells the audience nobody is "safe" in this movie. I much prefer the grounded feeling of this movie to the wackyness of the later films though I do enjoy them too.

It's 50/50 on what you like more tbh. I do enjoy the newer movies because they have more kaiju action and screen time for them, but I also do hold a soft spot for this movie too.

Honestly, I always liked Ford Brody. Maybe I'm just a normie, but it was interesting to see the Navy's response from a boots-on-the-ground POV. Make him and Mark Russell co-leads, damn it!

I mean, whatshisface is *supposedly* spending the majority of the the movie with the motivation of trying to get back to his family, but then he always takes makes the decision that would get him back home in the most roundabout way possible.

When you think about it, Minus One is what Godzilla 2014 should have been. It possesses things that G2014 had, such as a grounded tone and a sense of scale, but it also includes the things that G2014 lacked, such as engaging characters, action sequences that the film doesn't cut away from, and a greater focus on Godzilla.

My dad had the entire Godzilla movie collection on dvd (and some VHS) and any time I visited him we would watch one of the, to say that Godzilla was literally an intrinsic part of my childhood is an understatement so yeah I fully understood the HYPE when the trailers for this one dropped. It has several flaw's but it also has some of the most stunning shots of the big guy himself and the muto's were pretty sick as well.

I love 2014. The final fight was just that much better with all of the strip teases. I also really enjoy the almost horror aspect they added to this one. It was a very nice one off type of movie, kind of like clover field almost. Now, it definitely needed to move to something else for the sequels, but 1 movie like that was great. As far as Cranston, I was too young to know anything about breaking bad when it came out, so I never had any expectations for that so that never left a bad taste in my mouth

Fun fact: In the original script of this movie, Godzilla would be directly tied to the bombing of Hiroshima. The nuke would have awakened him. And there would be a scene where the human characters debate about it. The Department of Defense demanded this got cut, or else they wouldn't help with the military stuff in the movie. Why? Because they didn't wanted the movie to make America look bad in the slightest. God forbid we debate the morality of dropping a nuke on a bunch of civilians who had nothing to do with the actual war. Another thing that was cut from the movie was Aaron Taylor Johnson's character being a deadbeat dad, due to being traumatized by his time in the battlefields as a EOD. Once again, the government said no.

As the video says, the most obvious appeal to Godzilla movies is "big monsters fighting". But. It's surely not too much of a stretch to go from fear about "city destroying nuclear weapon" to "city destroying gigantic monster".
