I looked for lots of videos before buying this machine and found a few that were very helpful so I thought I would make one of our setup now its running.
This is a 1964 Wadkin FM24 surface planer and thicknesser, we have made a couple of alterations to it that we find to work very well. It has a single 7.5hp three phase motor and is fitted with a DC brake.
Since we do a lot of thicknessing a good dust extraction facility was crucial, for this we have replaced the blade guard on the back side of the fence with a dust extraction hood. This means that it is permanently fixed to the machine but also slides out of the way when the surface plane facility if being used. For better extraction we use a couple of wooden blocks to completely seal the gaps down to the bed.
The other addition was the featherboard which we have fitted to the blade guard. It might not be a great setup for everyone but it perfectly suits what we do and means that the stock is kept tight against the fence at all times, it also means that if you need to let go of the stock and walk to the other side of the machine its unlikely that you will get any kickback.
I am just machining a piece of Oak here for the purpose of the video, its as it came from the sawmill hence the reason for a couple of passes on each edge.
Hope the video helps and if your thinking of buying one its a fantastic, solidly built, reliable machine!
