WAEC will never let students carry out brown ring test or did you see concentrated sulphuric acid in the instruction? H2SO4 is too dangerous for an exam body to allow students handle. There are other ways to test nitrate ion

0:02 . If the test begins with Heating C. It means that we will not test for nitrate ions. Since the gases Nitrogen oxide and oxygen will be evolved. We will only test for lead ions and carbonate ions. That means after hearing, we would be asked to add dil nitric acid to dissolve the mixture of lead oxide and sodium carbonate that remains. Then further test with sodium hydroxide and and ammonia will follow. Or instead of adding dil acid to the pbO and Na2CO3, we may be asked to add water. What do you think?
@sellaxi
@sellaxi Ай бұрын
Yes that's another version waec might ask, because sodium carbonate is stable on heating and lead nitrate would decompose to release a brown gas, nitrogen (iv) oxide and a residue, lead(ii)oxide, which is red when hot and yellow when cooled. Then the lead oxide and sodium carbonate remaining may be used to continue the rest of the test with reagents such as nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, and ammonia.

The FeSo4 used seemed c already oxidized, possibly because it has stayed long on the shelf. That is why the brown ring test didn't really work out.

Yeah, that's true. Seems you understand the process well.

I think the test tube is meant to be in a slant possible while you add the conc H2SO4 gently … the adjust the test tube gradually … the brown ring will be perfectly seen

How did you measure the components of the mixture?

You are not to shake the tube on adding Conc H2SO4 for the brown ring test.

But sir, I think that ur no 1 observation and inference needs to be checked. It is assumed that, the students don't know the salts that formed sample c. So y stating that c is a mixture of salt?
@sellaxi

When waec gives two salts as a sample,it's always stated as a mixture of two salts.

Waec will state it already on the question paper that C is a mixture of two inorganic salts, carryout the following exercises on C

I think, the report should be written based on what is observed. To me, c partially dissolved in water and c is a mixture of soluble and insoluble salt. I think it's better like that because, stating that, c is a mixture of solution salt means that, there is no precipitate
@sellaxi
@sellaxi Ай бұрын
No, sample C is a mixture of two soluble salts, so the two salts react in the presence of water to give a white precipitate, it's unwise to say it's a mixture of soluble and insoluble salts, and again take a close look at the reaction, it's a precipitate, not an insoluble salt.
@susanachusim7733
@susanachusim7733 Ай бұрын
Ok, then report it this way that c is a mixture of two soluble salts which reacts in a precipitate reaction to give a soluble and insoluble salts
@akinvincent4013
@akinvincent4013 Ай бұрын
@@sellaxiHow do you know they're both soluble if the question didn't state that? We should record observations not assumptions
@Uncle-Chemical
@Uncle-Chemical Ай бұрын
Simply say: c is a mixture of two salt. You can't say if if one is soluble or insoluble because the examiner expects the student to know there will be exchange of radical if the two salt are mixed. Therefore no one can conclusively say one is soluble or not.
