This was my first thought as well. Not to say these owners don't regularly see a vet, but in case they don't, it is something to keep in mind when taking care of a cat, or really any animal. Decades ago my grandmother's cat was "mean." In reality he was in constant pain from tooth decay. Once the issue was addressed he was very sweet.

I agree some people want to be miserable and some people you can’t waste your energy on -but moreso that the lesson could be maybe to be a supportive friend, you don’t have to think that means you expecting to magically fix everything with your comfort. It’s much more realistic to realize that you can be a supportive friend and they might just need to be allowed to feel sad -rather than trying to guilt them for not being over something so you feel more comfortable.
