His math is simple. A war crime tribunal is 1,000 times better than a death by Ukrainian artillery or his comrade sledgehammer.
@Longtack55

I consider War crimes tribunals tedious time-wasters. They tend to bend over backwards for the accused, providing them with lawyers who are intent on testing the law to the nth degree, and as is their wont, demonstrably indifferent to the brutal (disputed) facts presented by the prosecution. That is the Law - and it sucks. It has been hijacked by avaricious grandstanders.

Most people probably don’t know this, but a Ukrainian did a research on him that he already completed a 6 months tour for the Wagner group. He had probably killed a lot of Ukrainians and it’s only that he’s afraid they might send him again that he decided to escape.

Of course he did. Its not easy to get rid of your brainwash and then flee an active warzone while your own troops as well as the enemy is trying to kill you and even when you succede leave your family, friends, everything behind, beeing the rest of your life in fear of retaliation. You do need to reach a point of absolute desperation to leave. If you have the outlook that in a couple of month the horror is over and the reward - a "normal" life - can be claimed, then its only natural to stay. Therefore he did his 6 month of service. Then he saw that they wont let him leave as they promised and the only outcome is death or crippled. This is not "it wasnt about moral choice" its an addition to the moral reasons. To go public is what makes him brave.

Two most likely options are he’s either lying about not witnessing any war crimes, or his escape wasn’t arranged by human rights groups or mysterious strangers, but rather one of Prigozhin’s political enemies in the Kremlin. It is very convenient for his enemies that one of his former soldiers shows up in the West and starts blasting Prigozhin in the media.

@@greenbeanz5914 Actually you are mistaken about that, my friend. I'm not for or against either side. I genuinely feel that this conflict doesn't concern us over here. I just wish our "leaders" felt the same way. America is in the worst state that I have seen in my 47 years walking on this rock, and those in power want nothing more than to shift our focus elsewhere to avoid the populace from realizing this. They have no reservations regarding sending billions overseas to a war that is not our own, meanwhile, they see no problem with our citizens paying record prices for just about every available service and commodity. During the height of the pandemic, our lawmakers debated for weeks regarding the miserable pittance the government paid out in the form of stimulus checks, yet approved the Ukraine support almost instantly. What's more, each time a new form of aid is granted to Ukraine, they immediately ask for more. I'll make a prediction right here, in saying that once this whole tanks/armored vehicle situation is underway the next request will be fighter jets/air support. All of this laid upon the backs of US taxpayers who had absolutely no say in the matter. @@dullahan7677 fair comment. But it’s not just the USA with skin in the game - this is a Cold War nightmare writ large for many in Europe, only it’s not West Germany and the Warsaw Pact barrier states in the way of being turned into ash and glass. Not yet anyway. I fear the USA does not recognise its place as a global leader in many ways - chanting ‘USA! USA! USA!’ and something something democracy something something freedom eagle something something gazpacho is not a sufficiently sophisticated worldview, and taking an isolationist viewpoint of very realpolitik is probably an element that contributes to the domestic social ills that you identify as needing fixing. It’s like rejecting immigrants fleeing war, inequity, corruption and more but not rejecting administration and party policies which create so much war, inequity, corruption and more. Beyond that, noble institutions support the right to self-determination and by being invaded, is Ukraine to be forced by violence to surrender that right? People die in Ukraine for American/USA political and economic interests. Ukraine was a state in the USSR, - the east of that Ukraine region was and is substantially ethnic Russian, and eastern Ukraine was part of Russia from the late 1700's till about 1922, but was not Ukraine prior to 1922, and was a state within the USSR till 1991. That's Russia's neighborhood. They're not going to let Crimea and the Donbas(and thereabouts) go to The West. Btw, I'm in The West, military central in SoCaL. But, east Ukraine region is historical Russian lands. That's Russia's core neighborhood. Leave it to them,… in peace. The issue here is eastern Ukraine plus Crimea, which is historical Russian land since the 1700's to about 1922, and Russia having a naval base in Crimea since the 1700's. Then the USSR happened, with Russia being the big dog state of the USSR, Ukraine being another state. And, the Russian Ruling Elite don't want The West to have that land by way of Ukraine. It's prime real estate, with a substantial Russian history and ethnic-Russian population, and it's a core of Russian history, it's core Russian neighborhood. Russia is taking a stand on multi-polarity of the world, along with China, in counter to The West / USA.

I'm pretty sure he's going to do his best not to implicate himself in any of these thousands of atrocities committed by Russia. Especially if any of these high end criminals are ever apprehended and brought to trial at the Hague. If he has to lie like a yellow dog to keep his neck out of a noose I'm pretty sure he's not beneath it. If he were offered immunity from prosecution to testify at their trial THEN we would hear the real truth. Edit Also, if he gets on international TV and starts rattling off and putting names with specific, heinous atrocities and, for whatever reason, gets sent back to Russia, he wouldn't last a snowballs throw into hell. So, he's going to be cautious with what he's saying.

It is hard for him to be a spy, as a lot of his story were checked and verified by people like Vladimir Osechkin, a Russian human right activist with a lot on insiders in Wagner, FSIN and FSB. So it would be difficult to say that you were on the front line or were put there in a box for defiance, as other people were there to witness that and they can just verify or deny that information. And no sane spy is going to be willing to join Wagner on the most deadly part of the frontline and then be 1 step away from death. The only way for him to be a spy if he were to be recruited after he escaped Wagner by threatening to kill his mom unless he works for FSB or something like that. But he's an orphan with nothing and nobody and there's not a lot of leverage you can find on him.

@@Thomas.Deverell , a war criminal before the war? Isn't he a plain convict who just accepted to volunteer in a war he doesn't understand, but led by his government "to defend the motherland", to get out of jail? @@nomcognom2414 Who said 'a war criminal before the war'? Is he a five-year-old child? To defend motherland? From whom? Nobody attacked Russia. He went to kill people in this war just to get out of prison. He went to Norway just to have a better life, because he was no chance to find a job having no education and being a former prisoner. He is a liar and a war criminal who has no remorse for all the war crimes he has done! You'd better feel sorry for Ukrainian soldiers and civilians whom he killed!

For real. A grim appreciation or celebration of Ukraine’s successes is warranted. But I can’t get on board with some of the gleeful comments on videos of Russian troops getting merked. Each one has his own story and family. If we’d have been born in Russia we might be a mobik too.

because he looks scary? Think, MammaDuck! Think! He even came out to the world, that not very "spy-like" and puts you at risk no matter what your goal is. Also, as a defector you wont get access to "secret information", only social help. No offense, I get that you're scared. @@NotUnymous This one is not a decent human. This one is a Nazi murderer. He joined the neo-nazi private military and fought and killed people.
