A superb performance of the introduction to the Meistersingers by this great orchestra. It is one of my most favourite pieces of music I learned to appreciate from my very late father who was a church organist and choirmaster. I have loved this work for some 70 years and it never fails to move me. Many thanks to my old dad, Wagner himself and the fine orchestra.

Wonderful performance! Just a shame that the camera doesn’t pan to the tuba at 6:56 as it starts the tune which underpins the whole crescendo picked up by the rest of the orchestra. Give ALL the brass credit - they are the royal family of an orchestra!!!

Great! Agogically cleverly staggered and finely balanced. Here we are presented with a Wagner whose music, stripped of superfluous pathos that is often misunderstood as an integral part of musical theatre, can breathe. And lo and behold, it works! It's about time that we finally look at Wagner's work through the glasses of his time (1868) and no longer let ourselves be misguided by the same supposed ideals (Furtwaengler, Bernstein). Thanks.

Why is the dudes name die mister singer?
@martinstock
@martinstock 4 ай бұрын
Meister has 2 meanings - and both were combined here. This was already the case at the time those dudes lived in the 16th century. 1. the winner of a championship/contest e.g. football world champion is in German Fussballweltmeister. 2. the highest level of practical vocational training in Germany the Meister degree was (and still is) required - to train apprentices - to open your own business To obtain the Meister degree you must as last step deliver a Meisterstück (masterpiece). Could be also several pieces, e.g. for a baker or shoemaker. Those are judged by a jury. The Meistersinger were a group of Meister(s) in their various professions taking part in a song/singing contest where they aim to deliver a Meisterstück as well (even if it's "just" a song). Hans Sachs (1494-1576) was a shoemaker Meister and also the most famous of the Meistersinger from Nuremberg. From 1555 on he was also the chairman of the shoemakers guild. He was very popular in the 16th century. And - for this time - also a really liberal politician. Nuremberg was a Free Imperial City and was ruled thus in first place by the guilds and important merchant families of the city.
