I cannot deny the greatness of this overture, but I can never listen to it without being reminded of my friend, Eva (She died of pancreatic cancer in 1989). Eva and I used to attend opening night at the Met together each year. One year the opening night performance was of Wagner's . Eva had never listened to any work of Wagner since the end of WWII, nor attended the performance of any of his works, because of its association with Hitler and the Nazis. It tore her apart to have to make this decision, but eventually she decided to attend the performance. During the opera, I was tapping my hand lightly on my knee during the arrival of the guests at the music festival. Eva leaned over to me and whispered, "This is what they played, as they marched us into Auschwitz."

Of course, KZbin now uses Ogg Opus, it hardly takes anything away from the original WAV. The quality is more down to the recording engineer, preserving the dynamics, ... and this recording has wonderful placing of instruments, nice depth, high dynamics only to be appreciated on speakers which can reproduce this well. Tannhäuser (Ouvertüre) is one of Richard Wagner's first great masterpieces. This opera tells the story of Tannhäuser, a man in search of identity, divided between the sensual and the spiritual, profane love and sacred love, but also that of an artist seeking recognition. From the Overture, two main themes oppose each other, the first towards divine, pure, celestial love, embodied by Elisabeth, and sensual, pagan, earthly pleasure, embodied by Venus which will become in the rest of the opera the Choir of pilgrims. This duality is represented with incomparable ability in the writing. The Overture therefore summarizes the thought of the drama with two songs, the religious song and the voluptuous song which are here posed as two terms, and which, in the finale, find their equation. A true chorale, it is first solemnly presented by two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons. The theme of Repentance follows, more lyrical but introspective. He leads to a crescendo reinforced by the successive appearance of repetitive rhythmic elements with triplets, first in the strings then in the woodwinds, punctuating the reprise of the Pilgrims' Choir with brilliant descending movements, sixteenth notes played by the violins. Wagner characterizes the duality of his personage by melodic lines freed from all pre-established rules, always halfway between the recitative and the air. When the initial theme of the pilgrims reappears, it is with power and brilliance, played by two trombones and a tuba supported by intense timpani rolls. Richard Wagner draws in the richness of the symphony orchestra, a dramatic power which immerses us in a few moments in this romantic opera. No words can describe the immense beauty and great richness of this music. *Lucien*

Easily one of the best Tannhäuser Ouvertüre performances on KZbin, if not the best. Stunning: perfect tempo and narrative arch imo, incredibly moving. It's no wonder Wagner is still so popular. He is one of the first truly modern composers. Producing large, melodramatic, & highly sentimental pieces that appeal to all ages. Possibly the most talented orchestrator of grand opera. I lived in Phoenix some years ago & the local classical station would typically play Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries every weekday morning & I'd crank it up while driving home from work. Strangely, cars moved aside for me as I sang loudly along with the music blaring & windows down. Made my drive much more enjoyable. And quicker.

Also a splendid Solo Clarinetist ~ Almost equaling NY Philharmonic's late *Stanley Drucker, Legendary Principal Clarinetist under L. Bernstein! A superb German Orchestra in The Universe of GOAT German Orchestras made legendary by The King of Conductor's, Herbert von Karajan ... (And personally, I've never liked Wagner, yet this first time hearing performance of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony has my Vote!) As from 'Apostle' Violin Pupil of Jascha Heifetz (JH Violin Master Class-Khachaturian, JH-7, EM) & later private artist pupil of Nathan Milstein, London, 3.5 years + Milstein Help-Assist to NM Int'l Violin Master Course/s, Zurich, Summer 1970-72, Elisabeth Matesky, US on 28th September, 2024 ~ Music Director, Alain Altinoglu, a superb interpreter of Wagner! If one didn't know better, one would think Maestro Altinoglu studied with Sir Georg Solti, our late Music Director of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, also Frankfurt Opera MD just following WWII ~

I adore Wagner. To think that this was composed just mere decades after Mozart is sobering. The cascading Violin motif at 2:14 is borrowed in John Williams' score.."Harry's Womderous World". Wagner's notation is highly addictive. The finale's cascading scales are mind-knumbingly beautiful. Wagner is an alternative name for GOD.
