It is the first opera that I listened to in one sitting without being able to pause it, so powerful was its impact on me. Parsifal was composed by Wagner taking into account the acoustic of the theatre he created to perform his own operas: the Bayreuther Festspielhaus. The transformation passages (Verwandlungsmusik), accompanied by bells and followed by the powerful choirs are part of the timeless moments of this work. Who says Parsifal says Hans Knappertsbusch. He is the true champion of this opera. However, in 1953 Clenmens Krauss, with a different approach, realized a miracle of interpretation in public. It is a recording that belongs to the pillars of the Wagnerian record library, just like his Ring from the same year. The vocal cast is exceptional. Weber's sublime Gurnemanz and London's Amfortas are classics; Uhde can join them in one scene. Vinay is tortured, visionary and adds an unforgettable figure to his series of portraits and Mödl is an intense Kundry, inexhaustible with energy. Fully agree Classical Music/ /Reference Recording. Sincerely, my favourite Wagner's work. That it's regarded like his ''summit''. I know musical works with an important charge of spirituality such as Bach's Passions, Bruckner's late symphonies and sacred music( specially, mass nº. 2 in E minor)...But frankly Parsifal it goes further of those works. This is saying a lot. Simply, it's mystery done music. This performance I don't know. When I have a time will listen it because I read that it's among the most prominent. Thanks in advance!.

I subscrive all you said. The spiritual and mystical portions of the work are unique. And Parsifal and Knappertsbusch are synonims. So, another great upload of yours, CM/RR, from Clemens Krauss, another Wagner great as always. But, when a complete Ring???

A wonderful performance indeed. Krauss was an exceptional conductor. Bear in mind, however, that Parsifal is NOT an opera. Wagner made that quite clear, and described it as a Bühnenweihfestspiel.

Hans Knapperbusch's 1951 recording on a completely empty stage at Bayreuth cannot be recommended strongly enough. Here Parsifal is taken to the next level. Every note is ecked out and given an ecstatic resounding tone, producing near delirium of the senses. A Vivifying exultation of one's planetary body occurs during this apotheosis of an interpretation. As Goethe said on hearing Beethoven's fifth for the first time, "when I went to put my hat on I didn't know where my head was"

Clemens Krauss: il primo a eseguire "Metamorphosen" di Richard Strauss! "Parsifal" è un'opera permeata di sacralità, come il "Tristan" prorompe di passione disperata. La gioiosità dei "Maestri Cantori" è lontana.....

"Chorus-forward in the Heiles Wunder is right where is should be!" I've been a perennially ardent fan of Parsifal for most of my adult life. It was Wagner's greatest musical chapter brought to a close with great torment and struggle in Palermo, Sicily. I've always thought the he dreamed the music before the music drama, i.e., the drama is merely a scaffold for the music. Parsifal could easily stand without libretto, without staging (as post-WWII Bayreuth discovered) and, quite frankly, without song. Parsifal is a 4-hour musical meditation without peer. Close your eyes and leave this earth. This is a remarkable performance: the singing is delicious and the orchestra--under Krauss is remarkable; I've heard things in this I've never heard before in a Parsifal. Portions hidden from me before, now revealed. Dark corners now lit. Almost like discovering new joys in the recesses of a dear old friend. I especially like how this recording enhances the bass and treble. Not sure whether this is due to Krauss or remastering or both. However, the results are spectacular. Thanks for this upload; a new addition to my library. 💖

This is the pure wagnerian christian gnostic spirit (Lohengrin) with the infinite melody sound,It was a personal search of the Graak through his creations redemption by love (Love against the malediction of world desires)The beginning is close to some bars of Mendelssohn fifth symphony Reform.May be a religious hymn theme,This is no really an opera,it is liturgic music celebrating struggle and freedom of the spirt of all matter and redemption by divine love. .Niesztche wrote against this work about the Wagner case, It was the rupture point between them.

In the next remasters, could you project a more defined sound, not highlighting the low frequencies so much and giving more clarity to the mid frequencies? My idea is to try to suggest a sound that allows you to hear all frequencies well, an analog sound, or at least as close to that kind of sound as possible. Thanks for another post! Hug!

Dear friend, thanks for your message. Mastering is a difficult job, especially on old recordings where the quality of the tapes and recordings are very different in quality. Moreover, few people today have a hi-fi system but listen to music on the computer, tablet, wireless speakers, or headphones. The majority of these listening media naturally accentuate the medium. It is thus necessary to be very vigilant in the work of these frequencies. As far as Krauss' Parsifal is concerned, the tapes and the sound recording are mediocre. The medium (precisely) breaks the ears and it is not possible to listen to 4 hours of Opera in these conditions. Moreover one should not judge the medium part on the orchestral part but especially on the voices. You will notice that the neutral sound allows the voice to come out clearly without being strident. The bass is also very important, especially with the Germans, it was the basis of the Furtwangler conducting which is our model. If you listen to Rosenthal's remastering of Debussy or Ravel, you will find that the midrange is much more prominent.
