Scholars make a lot of Wagner's tonality in Tristan and Isolde but listen for the tonality in Tannhauser, it preceded Tristan especially in the Venusberg music.

As a composer of ballet music and an orchestral composer, Wagner blew Tchaikovsky out of the water with his Tannhauser overture and Venusberg music.
