Many people that are not musicians do not realize that an ORCHESTRA is simply a huge instrument (like an organ) and the Conductor is the artist...the player if you will. This is why Conductors are known to be testy...it is like having a key out of tune is one of the members of the instrument isn't playing it the way the conductor wants it. You can't have independence in the instrument.

This is the Paris version. Wagner significantly changed the opera in an attempt to make it palatable to the French opera-goers. He failed, partly because of some very rude members of Parisian society who saw to the opera's failure. In any case, you've probably been hearing the Dresden version of the overture, which is roughly 15 minutes long.

@@geoffwhitemusic : That assessment seems to be correct--- there are two radically different versions of the overture, with the Paris version organically connected to the following Venusberg music, whereas the more commonly-programmed Dresden version (as an orchestral violinist and violist, i have had to labour through the Dresden version three or four times but have never been called upon to play the Paris version...) ends loudly and triumphantly without said Venusberg "stuff". The loud ending, which by comparison with Tennstedt's choice here is somewhat more brief, probably explains its much greater popularity....

I didn’t think at first but this version absolutely nailed it. The speed was perfect and the sound evolves completely naturally. I remain stunned.

I remember my first introduction to this great overture - played on a Decca LP by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hans Knapperbusch (spelling?). The experience still thrills me to this day.

Feeling sad that I've not been able to attend this marvelous concert in Japan back then but then enchanted on the other hand that I'm given the opportunity to hear and see this over and over again on KZbin. Don't you ever delete these signature renditions of Wagner's works by Tennstedt and the RLPO. These are definitely unmatched ever since.
