The first time I heard Wagner's Tannhauser Overture I am not ashamed to say that, as a man, I almost cried. Never have I heard anything so beautiful in all my life. Richard Wagner was a musical genius!

@@Max63385 What an aggressive stance, why the personal attack? I know about Wagner what I read and frankly Wagner was not a very nice person outside of music. He was rude and he liked it so, he also liked his wife to have to hear that he loved his dog Pohl more than he loved her. There are tons of anecdotes about him outside of the music world. A funny man.

IMHO this is the perfect piece to introduce classical music to someone who doesn't know it. One beautiful theme is developed from single instruments to full orchestra over a rhythmic background that anyone can appreciate. Genius!

Stirring, uplifting, beautiful and epic! Though all art forms should be able to express the full gamut of human emotion and experience, ultimately, I feel, it should, in some way, elevate the human sprit. In our modern age, we are assailed every day by music, literature and visual art that degrades and denigrates us; that revels in its facile ugliness and juvenile obsession with the self; that poisons our spirits with its nihilism. Listening to this I feel cleansed, if only momentarily...

It's the very concept behind Tannhäuser, the Minnesänger (the poet), who spent his life with Venus in the Venusberg (Heaven), which was considered a blasphemous act. A pious woman named Elisabeth tried to rescue him, but God had passed over the poet when he'd apportioned the Earth to those of various callings, denying the poet a normal life. So wrote a German poet at the turn of the 19th century; in recompense, God allowed the poet to sit at his side in Paradise. So wrote a German poet at the turn of the 19th century; in recompense, God allowed the poet to sit at his side in Paradise. Does anyone know this poem, which I haven't been able to locate without going into my boxed-up German literature? Wagner's music makes Tannhäuser present for us and transports us to his abode in the Venusberg. It's a wicked experience that lifts our soul.

Music helps us remember, we see the happy faces of our parents in front of us, and this is eternal, music is always with us in our ears, and thanks to modern technology, it is also in our pockets, in our cellular phones... or it has become a concert hall in our apartment.... Well, it has been a while since I last listened to Herbert v K with the BPO. I have loved Baremboim's Tannhauser on Telarc as my once and only favourite of this ouverture (yes, I am using the correct French spelling of the word), over the years, and I did think that it would be impossible to beat. I recently started to re-listen to some of the pre-2000 "classic" recordings and I have to (grudgingly) admit that Karajan's interpretation of the final third ouverture is one of the best I have heard. The often difficult transitions in this piece are taken so smoothly by Karajan and the BPO who are in fine form. Perfection.

@@jung9399 - Do you know that Karajan collaborated with and advanced the careers of certain black and Jewish musicians? Although he didn't oppose the Nazis like Toscanini, perhaps he wasn't nearly as twisted as Richard Wagner.

Y creo honestamente... Que la mediocridad creativa actual? Social Y Moral!.. Está sufriendo una regresión próxima al Paleolítico!
