@@boehmfarm4276 I could back wagons pretty good because all cotton trailers are really wagons, and we had a ton of them. I started hitching two together and pulling them to the gin together and just left them hitched together. Backing two together, yeah a few feet but that's it, it just all goes wrong LOL:) It's double or quadruple reversed depending on how you look at it... Later! OL J R :)

What would you call a swiveling axle like that
@lukestrawwalker2 жыл бұрын
@@northsneads3662 Those are "automotive" type steering axles, with kingpins and spindles swiveling on the end of a fixed axle, using a swiveling tongue to move the tie rod(s). The other type is a "fifth wheel" type which is under stuff like anhydrous wagons, and the wagon he made into a hay wagon out of an anhydrous running gear... basically they have a straight front axle (no swiveling kingpins/spindles at the wheels, like a rear trailer axle) and the whole thing is made to pivot on a plate-and-pin arrangement in the very center like a semi truck fifth wheel plate under a trailer... The whole axle swivels from side to side, which causes the tire on the inside of the turn to swing back under and toward the center of the trailer, and the outside wheel in the turn to swing forwards and toward the center of the trailer. Good for semi trucks and really stiff trailers/wagons, but gets tippy on high-centered loads like gravity boxes, particularly on soft or unlevel ground, which is why they use automotive type steering running gears... It helps a LOT if you have tandem axles under front and rear... there was a company that made some HUGE cotton trailers (wagons) that had tandem axles front and rear with a fifth wheel steering arrangement. Worked really well too, but very heavy and those trailers cost a LOT of money new! Most of our cotton trailers were home-built... I built a few myself! OL J R :)

You get a gold star for wagon backing I'm pretty good myself and your right trying to teach someone else is difficult experience is the only teacher. Would a 275 mini bulk work for gas?
@boehmfarm42766 жыл бұрын
I am not sure how the plastic tank would react with the gas for storage. I know gas can be rather trying on plastic. Especially if would sit outside near the other fuel tanks.
@coreytrout38576 жыл бұрын
Boehm Farm I'm not sure either I was thinking about least cost old saddle tanks off of a old semi are great if you can find one
@lukestrawwalker2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't... evaporation would be high and not good for the plastic-- anything busts you're done gas is GONE and a big spill... not good. Metal tanks are the way to go even if you have to use a bunch of 55 gallon drums in the short term... If you have your farm diesel tax exemption number, you can always go to your bulk dealer and pick up a load of fuel in your drums... That's what I'm looking at doing here at Shiner... I'd like to get a leg tank (gravity tank) later on. If you took two drums at a time get most of your gas in one shot, shouldn't take too much to drive over there and get it. Later! OL J R :)

all the dryer fires i ever had happened when below zero. we had a mathews company 410 bu 2 fan pto driven continuous grain dryer. there's a fan pressure switch just behind the bottom cooling fan that can freeze with ice and wont shut off the gas should the tractor gell up. the 2 thermostats can ice up stop working from all the steam so the corn starts burning on fire around 11% should it get that low. it's super important to combine fields according to crop moisture. very bad to put in a load of 18% then a load of 29%. i used to run 27k bu through that thing every fall back when corn was $1 bu. seed genetics have come a loooooooooooooooooog way over the years. most farms around here have a 10,000 bu dryer bin or leave it in the field.
@boehmfarm42766 жыл бұрын
We were separating the corn based on moisture. The dry corn went it one bin, and the wet corn went in the better bin with the better fan. We have always air dried in the bin. I would leave it stand until it dries, but I have too many things to fix and trees to cut in the winter to have corn harvest looming. I mean, I will leave it in the field in the fall for a couple weeks, but once Thanksgiving hits, I really want to be done before Christmas.

Why did the points not last?? They can burn up if the condensor is no good, which is kinda what it sounded like. Also if the coil is aftermarket and has too many windings (to produce higher voltage at the plugs) that can fry a condensor because basically the condensor absorbs voltage spikes in the primary windings when the points open... it's sorta like the water hammer effect-- you close a valve suddenly and there's a pressure spike because the flowing water has momentum but suddenly nowhere to go... same thing but with electricity (electrons DO have mass and therefore momentum). Anyway swapping in a good electronic ignition points replacer isn't a bad idea... electronic ignitions really help those older systems because they're pretty much "set it and forget it". Course properly set up and working points and condensors work just fine too, just "old school" and you have to learn the tricks to them. My old IH cotton pickers all had BD-240 inline six gas burners in them with points and condensors. Thing was they quit making the spark plugs for them, and the only thing they had that matched the thread and size and heat range was "lawn and garden" plugs... the first few sets worked okay, but then I started getting plugs blowing apart-- it would straighten out the curled over part of the top of the shell that crimps in and holds the porcelain insulator in the lower metallic plug body with the ground electrode, threads, flats for the socket, and metal gasket seal. Shoot the plug right out of the engine like a bullet with the wire most of the time, pull it right out of the cap. Dunno what that was all about-- either weak metal or too much pressure for the plug I guess... Oh well they'd served their time... those pickers were 50 years old when we retired them... OL J R :)

What sort of dryer?? Batch dryer, or bin dryer with an air floor?? Dryers are about like everything else-- you have to take the time and effort to learn use them correctly, and you have to be proactive and careful operating them, and learn the quirks and tricks by experience. Later! OL J R :)

It takes some practice, and you have to think like you're steering the wagon, not the tractor, if that makes sense.
@alancooper53866 жыл бұрын
this small Ford tractor isn't Diesel is it? Strange that you don't have a bulk gas tanks, do all your grain augers, trucks all run on diesel. we go through at least 4000 litres of gas a year, swathers are gas, augers gas, trucks gas, under 90hp tractors are gas. Here with a Farm lic plate on ur truck u can run marked farm fuel anywhere's.
@boehmfarm42766 жыл бұрын
All our tractors are diesel, just my gas combine. All the vehicles are gas, but we can't buy "farm" gas in the US. Now, we have off road diesel, which is died red and is sold without road taxes. I haven't found any oil company selling tax free off road gas. Then, we'd have to file more tax forms at the end of the year to get the road tax back on the gas we used in farm machines.
@alancooper53866 жыл бұрын
as i am understanding things from my father, our fuel prices are double the cost of down in the USA, so just double your year end number to see how much you are saving. up here every form of government grab a little from fuel taxes, the Federal is #1 with tax ontop of tax, then each province has their own fuel tax and then finally the minnisiple tax on fuel total is about 68cent per every litre of fuel is some sort of tax. gas pump price currently is about 1.08 per litre, remove the tax it would be 40cents or $1.80 for a Canadian gallon or $1.50 for a USA gallon.
