Amazing! Thanks for taking the time to disassembly the bench to show how it works.

Nicely done. Is there a way to put the nut in the moving part so the handle stays put?
@LakeErieToolworks3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it would be difficult with a 2-1/2" diameter screw. We have made a handful of 1-3/4" double start left hand screws for customers looking to engineer their own wagon vise with a sliding nut block.

Wish I can make this Vise grip, but only in my dream.

I figure there’s a good reason the traveling block isn’t the nut, so you don’t have the Acme screw sticking out? Sorry if this has been answered already but I was curious
@LakeErieToolworks3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response, yes, it keeps the screw from sticking far out from the end of the bench as you said.
@snizzle51515110 жыл бұрын
works very well but you clearly went to a lot of trouble to make a good looking wooden vice then leave massive bolts hanging out.....if they were countersunk would be a million times better...good job though
@LakeErieToolworks9 жыл бұрын
+snizzle515151 Agreed, counterboring the lag bolts would have improved the appearance but I was on a very tight schedule and didn't have the time.

@ LakeErieToolworks ... oh come on! Didn’t have 2 minutes to countersink the holes for a few bolts??? Get real. Why not just say, “ I should have done that”.

Making a wedged wagon vise and leg vise sometime in the next few weeks, this design however helps with ideas of aligning and spacing of the runners.
@labrat735711 жыл бұрын
I love the vise but those lag bolts are out of place. At least use thicker timber for the outer face so you can recess them out of sight. Thanks.
@LakeErieToolworks6 жыл бұрын
Lag bolts were used to quickly assemble/disassemble the workbench which is used as a traveling bench for tradeshows. 49 pounds total and it fits in two suit cases and can also be checked in as baggage. Rest assured that it can built with joinery excluding the lag bolts.

Hello, doesn’t the shoulder bolt get unscrewed while rotating the vise back? Is it ok without a bearing? Or will the screw itself suffice? Thanks
@LakeErieToolworks3 жыл бұрын
Typically it doesn't, we added an Igus brand plastic bushing to the backside of the brass plate shortly after this video was made, it reduces noise and provides a low friction surface for the shoulder bolt. Worst case scenario, a little loctite on the shoulder bolt screw and it won't go anywhere.

ничего практичного.

Have you discovered if you really needed the 5 adjustment screws for the runners to ride on or not?
@LakeErieToolworks4 жыл бұрын
We have found that by using 5 adjustment screws over the length of the runner, you have much greater precision and control when adjusting the glide of the dog block.

Nice tearout, chips , burn marks and really ugly steel lags. If this is a prime example of your product quality for traditional woodworkers - it's a big fail IMO. AND why mix the big wooden screw with delrin guides and other not so traditional parts? A little beeswax on hard maple has lasted 150 yrs on my vice slides.
@ureasmith30499 жыл бұрын
yeah, those ugly lags were the 1st thing that came to my mind.
@MasterCacophony9 жыл бұрын
+Tioga Fretworks Sure, those lags are a little ugly. They could be recessed for sure, but it's not the end of the world. Credit to the innovative design. If your bench is 150 years old you obviously didn't build it, whereas this guy was probably searching for something durable and functional in the short term. That said, my guess is that functionality and robustness and speed is largely accountable to the defects. Why spend all that extra energy preventing break out if you're the only person going to see it?

+MasterCacophony and at the end of the day it's only a place to work on.

+Tioga Fretworks I realize that this is quite late but comment emails apparently haven't been forwarding to me. The bench in the video was built with a tight schedule and isn't what I would call "fine woodworking", I was literally still working on it hours before my flight to the WIA conference in Pasadena ,2012, was to take off (it fits into 2 suitcases for plane travel, hence the poplar to keep the weight down). Admittedly not my best work. The lag bolts are made by Spax and they are awesome, much better than typical hardware store garbage. I didn't take the time to counterbore them as I didn't have the time, counterboring them would have improved the appearance. The UHMW slides work well but we do sell the wagon vise kits without them for those who would prefer a more traditional approach as you describe, hard maple and beeswax. We have a 30 day risk free trial period on our vises where we refund original domestic shipping as well as pay to have it shipped back if a customer isn't completely satisfied. You won't find finer quality wooden vise hardware.
@LakeErieToolworks9 жыл бұрын
+MasterCacophony This was a tight schedule project that needed to get done at the time (2012) and the lags were not counterbored as a result. I do recommend counterboring the lags as it does improve appearance.
@Sandhillwoodworks11 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that clears up a lot. I have the leg vice and the wagon vice and I am considering adding another at the other end same side as the wagon for use when cutting dove tails what would you recommend? I have 1/2 the bench glued up and flattened so I guess now would be the time to add it. Thanks Lee

I like your ideas and design. I often mix new and old technology to make something. You are not building a piece of furniture to show off your woodworking skills, you have built a very functional tool with thoughts to future wear and tear or need for adjustment. Still your woodworking skills are apparent. Thanks for the video and sharing. Greetings from Maine.

Superb craftsmanship until you get the the cheesy looking lag bolts. Why not use some hanger bolts with either brass or stainless steel acorn nuts.
@LakeErieToolworks9 жыл бұрын
+Lee Mullen That would certainly work. I was in a hurry to complete this so I couldn't counterbore the lags and the Spax lags are very nice, much better than typical hardware store garbage lags.

aren't you putting it together kinda backward ? Put the screw thru the nut assembly, attach the bracket to the end of the screw and the sliding block, slide the block between the guides and then bolt the nut assembly to the end of the bench.
@LakeErieToolworks8 жыл бұрын
+Big Fat Tony's That would work if the entire endcap is bolted on and can be unbolted, as is the case for this demo bench. It isn't uncommon for the front corner joint to be two large dovetails with the rest of the endcap bolted on, the endcap is effectively immovable once the dovetails are glued. The dovetails are more of a showpiece joint, not any stronger than the Spax lags but they do look great.
