Great install. Over time will the area where the vice hardware sits need to be reworked because of movement in the wood or will the hardness of the steel cause the wood to be more stable around it?
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 8 жыл бұрын
Great question Greg. Only time will tell. I don't expect too much movement, but we could see some in the oak plate on top. Not actually in the oak as it's quartersawn, but how it sits in relation to the pine bench top. That's the thing with workbenches and wood furniture, if things move or need adjustments then no worries- that's what we do! : ) all the best~

Tom - Which model of HNTG tail vice did you install (mm length), and what is the metric to decide between the two? Is the install in your subscription site more detailed. I do admire the work of HNT Gordon.
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, thanks for the interest. This is the smaller of the two tail vices they make- it's in our joinery bench so it won't be used for real heavy work. More for holding small pieces for detail work ie: inlay, carving etc.. If you're installing it in a standard work bench then I'd suggest the larger model which has a little more travel. As for the online membership videos, yes, they're more detailed than these KZbin videos. That said, this one only shows the bench preparation. Unfortunately, we lost the rest of the footage and only have one episode!! Thankfully I had already edited this video so members could see the complete project. Just so you get an idea, the first episode on our membership site is 30 minutes- it details the bench prep, flattening and squaring the front apron. This video gets to that same point around the two and half minute mark! Our next install is a Moxon Vice and we'll again have a shorter KZbin video showing the condensed version of the process, while the membership site will have two or three 30-40 minute episodes. Hope that helps, all the best~

@theUnpluggedWoodshop

Hey Jaime, thanks for the question- They're both excellent saws...the Skelton is completely hand made, one at a time while the Bad Axe is a little more manufactured. The Skelton uses Rosewood which makes it a little heavier than the Bad Axes- but they both feel great, cut fast and are a joy to use. Cheers~

lol- just a suggestion. I met Terry Gordon while teaching in Australia a couple of months ago and we spoke about these vices. Here in our school, we're trying to have multiple of examples of vices and work holding jigs/devices so students can see many of the options they have when building their own benches at home. Our next video will show us installing a Bench Crafted Moxon Vice and from there, a quick release Veritas vise. But all that said, even if it was a paid commercial, what difference would it make? The video content is still the same. You can choose to watch or not.
@kidskillconscience
@kidskillconscience 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Fidgen the difference would be that you would be required to disclose that you were paid to produce the content. if you produce an advert without telling us then we don't know if you truly like the product or if you are just selling us something.

Just so you know, I don't post videos of things I don't like. I don't use tools I don't like and we don't have tool partners with anyone at the UW we wouldn't use ourselves. Everything you see in these videos, are tools I enjoy using, are quality made by real people, getting paid a fair price, and I can feel good about recommending them to students, members and viewers. Yes, we have tool partners at the UW, and when we sell their products at the school or on our website we get a small commission. This helps keep the lights on at the UW- and if we choose to use our tool partners tools in our videos, it isn't because we're paid to do so, it's because we like using them-; ) Hope that answers your questions... all the best~
