Nice rig there pal! So, about the amp - it's a Sherwood S-5000 of later production (the front 5 12AX7s are mounted vertically rather than at an angle, and the body is shorter). It also has a 5AR4 rectifier, 4 7189s for the power stage (24 watts RMS per channel) and 2 7199 driver/inverter tubes. The selector knob you were playing with allows you to select stereo, reverse stereo, mono channel A, mono B, & mono A+B. Pulling out the balance knob changes the phase on one channel.

With the phase inverted and the input set to mono, you can actually bridge the amp's power stages and get 48 watts out of it. It features a unique output tube balancing circuit which uses injected filament AC hum cancellation as a test by which you can null the circuit and 'balance' the tubes. They are particularly sweet sounding and have a very clean input stage. Getting the right tubes to sound best in them is getting harder, but thankfully the originals last a while.

Wahoo! I just picked one of these S-5000 off Ebay. Im going to be using it for a turntable, it looks just like yours with the slanted output tubes.Do you happen to know which are the phono preamp tubes?
