I think at the time everyone forgot that Mother Caramel had the sun with her. She had the Soul-Soul Fruit. Big Mom literally got it by eating her. I feel like this explains how Blackbeard and crew gets devil fruit powers from people dying. I swear he must have literally ate Whitebeard's heart. This moment made the series a lot darker for me.

it wasnt shown at all, it just says "One day Mother Carmel simply vanished". There were very little subtle hints of the kids getting eaten like suddenly the sound effect written turned into "WAHHHHH AHHHH" like screams and of course the tables and chairs had bite marks on them, and then the two witness' reactions. The hints were so subtle that there were some people who didnt realize big mom ate the kids until people pointed it out. To me it was like a "it's open for interpretation from the viewers" kinda thing, but the hints kinda guided the readers to a certain direction. especially with how big mom has Mother carmel's powers

The thing is mentally big mom is a child that never grew up, the way she thinks and her dream itself is very childish. You could even say that subconsciously she knows that she ate all the kids and mother caramel so that broken image of caramel is like a reminder of why caramel will never see her again. The real question that could be asked is if big mom is actually a bad person at heart. The way i see it is she's an innocent child thats experience trauma trapped in an adults body.
