I was never bothered by the tracking rings on the previous gen controllers. I would rather have the rings and better tracking. Meta should release an update that allows us to use our quest 2 controllers with our quest 3s. Since many quest 3 owners also own quest 2s. Should be doable
@sixtacos10 ай бұрын
In theory it is possible like as you can with the Quest Pro controllers. The problems occurs when you have to retrain all the data to learn the old controllers with the different cameras. I think of it like shoes they serve the same purpose but not everyone wears the same size. Whereas, in Q2 it favored LEDs, in Q3 it favors the algorithm and IMUs. I think holistically they know its not even worth the effort for the tiny fraction of people like me that would do so. If you look at Metas lineup of controllers they want to achieve QPro like self tracking without the cameras on the headset at a lower price. They are banking IMUs and the AI which is just machine learning to solve that issue for them.

Good job on the clear criticism. Meta has made some pretty great improvements to controller tracking during the Q2's lifetime - based on feedback and internal testing. If you encounter issues such as these: report them, share them with friends and on YT. It's the fastest way to have things improve. The one thing I applaud Meta for is their firmware and sometimes software updates - launch Q2 vs Q2 now is a huge, huge difference. So I'm fairly optimistic they can at the very least further improve this

Imagine being 2meters tall and having the long arms to go with that: now imagine the overhead and far out swings some games require. Then look at the area the centred cameras of the Q3 cover. Easy to get the controllers out of sight and the „AI“ prediction takes over and it sucks balls at fast precision games. Q3 controllers track better then its predecessors BUT ONLY IF the headset actually sees them. But the missing corner cameras make it so a Q2 can see it’s controllers in A LOT more of these edge cases. The rings help with that too. So it’s a combination of these two things. Play in a way where the headset always sees the controllers and have shorter arms as well: no problems and you won’t ever understand where the complaints are coming from. Long arms and or wide swings (especially over head) and you’ll fucking hate the tracking and won’t ever understand how anyone can say it’s fine. Same coin - different sides ;-)

@Tw1stTech10 ай бұрын
@@wingsoficarus1139 many games are designed with the limitations of inside out tracking of quests (nowadays and for the near future especially Quest3 will be considered) and other standalones in mind. The more the game is made this way the less you’ll notice. The more games are playtested and used for the AI prediction catalogue the less you’ll notice. So big titles like AC, AW2, RM2 etc probably have way less problems than anything niche. Also as you said slower pace helps mitigate to a degree as the prediction can handle slower paced stuff it was trained on quite alright. I mostly felt it in beatsaber first but also anything from golf to tennis to tabletennis to shooting bows (reload from quiver fast with over head to behind the head motion part can be horrible at times and you simple don’t get an arrow) and games that makes your arms go to your sides or past an imaginary 45degree angled line from your forehead upwards. Also anything that makes you turn the controller sometimes while playing (backhand swings in an upwards outwards motion- for example beatsaber and boxing stuff partly- this (in contrast to the controllers of Q1 and Q2) makes the LEDs hard(er) to see for the headset because they are in the „faceplate“ rather than in the ring. The faster the motion the harder it gets for the cameras to separate the leds I think, especially in non ideal positions - in the rings (I have Q1 controllers here for direct comparisons) of older controllers there are 1. more LEDs and 2. they are placed further apart from one another and in a way more 3D dimensional array. This helped the cameras precisely detect even fast twisting and flipping motions easier and kept the LEDs or most of them in the cameras view even when twisting and turning or claw gripping the controller. My wife didn’t believe the Q1 was better for beatsaber than the Q3 - she doesn’t play beatsaber really and I let her side by side test both for 45 minutes before it was her finger pulling the trigger for the order of pro controllers with the comment of „nice backwards engineering Mark“ If you haven’t gotten a Quest 3 yet and are on the fence because of the controllers: I encourage you to get one. Play mostly slow story stuff in big titles and you’ll be fine. Just go in with the knowledge that as soon as you do something other than that and stumble into a scenario that the stock Q3 controllers and Q3 headset handle poorly as a combination you’ll have two options. 1: live with the tracking performance as it is and hope for updates that make the AI prediction faster and more precise for your edge case. 2. buy 300$ (for me it was 350€) pro controllers hating mark for the price tag, then connecting them and be done with the tracking problems topic as a hole.

The fact the cameras are centered instead of in the corners makes the tracking go bad on overhead and far out swings in every game - beatsaber especially! I can full combo 6 nps songs on the quest 1 easily and with the same motion pattern the quest 3 easily has at least 3-4 random „Misses“ on the same song. I bit the bullet and bought myself the pro controllers cause nothing was fun with that sort of random errors. WIN Reality is extremely frustrating with the Quest 3. I thought it was just game/app problem, but it sounds like it might be a bigger issue with the controller tracking. I assumed Quest 3 would be better because of the faster processor and more advanced tracking techniques. I have yet to try the Quest 2, or turning off hand tracking. It makes sense though based on what you mentioned. The games that have the most issue are the ones with fast movement, especially swinging the controller outside of view and back into view. Tennis and Baseball are like this. The time it takes to acquire correct controller positioning really matters in those games. We are probably talking 60ms for a 90 MPH fast ball. The controller/bat is trackable to when it needs to hit the ball, is 60ms or less.
@sixtacosАй бұрын
Yeah, still holds up a year later. Quest 3 leaning more on relying on computer vision/machine learning tracking techniques compared to Quest 2's IR-tracked system is a compromise for fast-movement games. Quest 3, is better for productivity/ergonomics with removing the tracking rings, but it's a compromise. I also like my fair share of baseball, and a game like Totally Baseball when hitting a pitch with Quest 3 sort of feels awkward. Leading up to the hit the ball with the IMU sensor + tracking algorithms Quest 3 delivers pretty good estimations, but in quick sudden movement, it begins to fall apart. Estimations can only be so accurate until it has to result to the IR sensors to align with the user. I doubt Meta's engineers oversaw this and it might be a first-gen controller compromise they took to make Quest the jack of all trades value-wise.

@@sixtacos I am buying myself a Quest 2 for the sole purpose of playing WIN Reality. Or at least to see if it fixes the issues I'm having. The biggest issue is that using a bat attachment further places the controller up, behind and away from your head. This seems to put the controller is a massive dead zone for the Quest 3 headset tracking. It works a little bit better if you have the controllers in your hand (but that ruins the experience of hold a baseball bat). From what I found (there is a reddit post), the Quest 2 camera positions on top are what makes the tracking better. And like you said, the Quest 3 is basically trying to predict controller positions above the head.

At launch, I wasn't hopeful for a fix but seeing that a lot of the time the left controller is mostly the problem for me I'm hopeful it can be fixed in due time. For casual gaming, you should be fine but a Quest 2 is a better fitness machine for me due to the better tracking in fast movements. Meta still has a lot of eggs in the VR basket, so I'm hopeful they improve the tracking. Then again, it's better to judge the headset on what it is currently whether that is what it could be looking at PSVR2 users. However, the Q3 lenses are great whether using a standalone or PCVR. I'm a nerd, so I would get it with a sale even better. Going from Q2 blurriness to Q3 sharp lenses it's some of the best money I've spent. If you no life Beat Saber Q2 is the better option, but story games like Asgards Wrath 2 that come with the Q3 headset are amazing. It showcases the future of standalone VR gaming.
