Over The Garden Wall is the first miniseries made for Cartoon Network that over the past decade has become a yearly rewatch for me as I consider it a modern classic. Let this video serve as a reason to give this show a watch during this time of year or an excuse to end up revisiting it if you haven't watch Over The Garden Wall since it came out. So let's talk about why Over The Garden Wall is an incredible series.

Can we all agree that the main villian from Over the Garden Wall is one of if not THE scariest and BEST villains in animation history?
@dischord1991
@dischord1991 Жыл бұрын
Yup and one of the best/most accurate depictions of the devil. He doesn't directly harm you, he just feeds your despair and leads you down the wrong path
@gota7738
@gota7738 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd day THE scariest or best (not that he's not either, there's just a LOT of animation out there), however I do think he's one of the most thematically strong animated villains out there. At the end of the day he's powerless and easy to defeat yet it doesn't undercut his threat or horror factor because every episode has been about characters struggling against the anxiety and hopelessness that he is essentially a manifestation of. Wirt beats him easily, but we know that's the culmination of his arc and had he not had that journey, he'd either have ended up as an edelwood or as the next Woodsman. That contradiction in the Beast is earned thanks to the cohesion of the writing.

This is one of the most underrated shows I recommend to people when I have to recommend something. The energy in this show was so unique. It reminds me of the old school Disney with the darkness but somehow it also feels like a fun kids Halloween night. It's one of a kind.

I think what I love best about this series is that it's done in an early Americana style, which is really sadly underused in animation (the Rabbit Ears adaptation of Sleepy Hollow is another great example). It really brings back a lot of memories for me, growing up in Maine.
@FoxxyFire-HellFrost

It was heavily promoted on CN and I was really excited to watch it. I love that series so much. It's like an updated Alice in Wonderland. The brothers are stuck in a place that doesn't follow the logic of what they've been taught but each of them handle it very differently. Wert is very much like Alice herself. Trying to rationalize the fantastical world they've entered but Greg, with his pure heart, adapts to each situation they're put in. In the end, the story reminds you to be more like Greg. To be open to new things and go with the flow. It's a true masterpiece and I encourage everyone to watch it as there is everything you'd want in a Halloween movie. Definitely a 10/10.

I regret to say that I didn't watch Over the Garden Wall when it originally came out. I had a friend recommend it to me in college (I think it was 1 year later at the time) and since then I always watch it at least once an October (once I watched it as much as 3 times). When I get people to watch it, sometimes it's with them kicking and screaming, but it always ends with them thoroughly enjoying it. What I think is the best part (which you touched on) is rewatching helps to dissect what's going on, and how everything fits together. Something that is found in the background of one episode can becomes extremely important in another, and it's neat when you find that connection. This series will always have a special place in my heart, and I plan on showing this series to my children (I have it on DVD after all).

I discovered it for the first time last October (2023) it happened to be on Cartoon Network and with us having finished Gravity Falls a few months prior, my Mom thought it might be something neat for us to try. Lo and behold, we had a lot of fun with it! It was definitely a bit weird at several moments throughout, but the characters really grew on us as we got deeper into the story. And once the flashback in episode 9 rolled around and it all started to make just a little bit more sense. Definitely an adventure that’s stuck with me. The crazy thing, we thought it was new! I just learned with your video here that it was originally put out around the time my sister was born. That is insanely cool, but now it also kinda makes me feel old… Either way, I loved the series and I’ll very happily watch it again.
