Universal principles apply to every style. When you train hard, you forget which technique you use during a confrontation. It all depends on how deeply you've integrated the universal principles into your nervous system. Let's discuss!

You're right. As Bruce Lee reminded us: as long as we have two arms and legs, there are only so many techniques.....it's the concepts that matter. Don't get stuck in the 'classical mess'. Use what works!

Back in the old days (no cameras), we used to have wars with the Chinese and of course, it has its original root lol. Well that was before the West came to the East, haha. So however, don’t be indoctrinated by the western histories or one sided story by the Chinese too.

I remember my aikido teacher long ago telling us a story of O Sensei. And at the end of the story, O Sensei is quoted with saying, I don't know techniques, when I move.... Techniques are born.... So thank you for the AIKIDO lesson @Adam Chan

I agree with you Adam. We now have the largest library in human history to draw from and to learn from. At the same time we should show respect and give credit where credit is due for each person's contribution to our growth especially if you have students. There are many stories of martial artists that travel from teacher to teacher and learn. It's important to give credit. In this day and age that is difficult as we get information so quickly now. Much respect that you acknowledge that.

The angles used in Filipino Martial Arts are the angles used in every other blade fighting system. You'll find the same concepts in HEMA & HAMA. You can only swing your arm so many ways.

Great video! People sometimes over intelectualize (guys love trivial information!), and it gets easy to lose sight of the primary purpose of martial arts. At the same time, some older martial artists/instructors have a very tribal approach, which they impart to their students --our style against the others-- and the students absorb it without thinking.

You don't have to apologize for flowing in the moment. This is honest self-expression in martial arts. This was brilliant! Like in the other comments it just naturally comes out when you study more than one martial art (in your case it was something you briefly learned 20 years ago) it's in your central nervous system. Yes I do agree that we need to show respect to the other Arts by naming them if we can outside of our own individual expression, absolutely! Categorize them for teaching purposes. As for flowing in the moment, that's when universal truths and commonalities in martial arts reveal themselves. Respect tradition without being bound by it.

I practice both Filipino martial arts and Chinese martial arts.....and have dabled in other arts as well.....bottom line is that the body moves only in certain ways....if you know the principals involved the body is not going to express as filipino or chinese......it will just be an expression of what you've trained....but yeah I do appreciate it when teachers do mentioned their influences just so they can at least honor where they learned it from...its just a good form of gratitude to practice and appreciation. Thanks for sharing your influence Adam and always a good job with your material.

if you fight naturally regardless of martial arts style they all look the same because of body mechanics. yes when you train to use what you have learnt there are no limitations you should train to respond to what attacks you perceive will happen in a "self-defense" situation but the basics of they style is what leads you there.

"Martial arts is expressing yourself."
@datr3128
@datr3128 3 жыл бұрын
this respectfully explains why many teachers of various arts do not want their students to practice other styles. The different styles would lose their unique characteristics if other influences cause students to automatically resort to using techniques outside the focus of the teacher’s work, and the techniques themselves will substantially change. Then, what happens to original source materials when practitioners are “mature” enough to begin responsibly drawing from these individual and unique wells of knowledge and truly self-actualize and internalize their training?

The form isn't the art, the art is what you learn from the form. Didn't Krishnamurti say something like "break the bowl"...meaning accept the nourishment but don't get attached to the container. Never hurts to be reminded of this. Thanks Adam. Really digging your latest videos. GB

I totally agree. Iain Abernethy also talks a lot about how styles or systems are just specific expressions / examples of principals. So, like you said, it's not the technique that's important, but rather that the technique is an illustration of a principal / habit that one should seek to create through their training. Thanks for all the pointers in these videos!

The idea is to have an effective way of defending yourself. It’s a mistake to reject any effective technique. You want to have a bunch of muscle memory moves for every situation. I think that Bruce lee had the right idea to use what works for you. “For you” is the key. Why would anyone want to expose any movement for not being wing chun. Nice that you are so respectful, but in real life, more people are idiots than not. More people get pleasure making others look bad than look good. Humans aren’t nice in general. Most of them should be ignored.

That's the problem. Styles only separate humanity. All martial arts are a piece of the truth, not the whole truth. The only principle all martial arts share is the YinYang, while the rest is how they are trained. Your muscle memory dictates how you are going to respond to a given situation.

Great explanation! I used to train Ving Tsun / Wing Chun for a few years and switched over to Kali/Filipino Martial Arts. I'm still using Wing Chun in some movements e.g. if my arm gets blocked I have a tendency to use Jut Sao to clear the line. My kicks are still more Wing Chun style kicks just because I feel more comfortable using them. I agree that one should see all the different martial arts as a library to make us of instead of getting lost in all the different styles and trying to only use one as pure as possible. Looking forward to the next videos - great channel! :)

Look into the early Wing Chun schools from Gulao Village of Leung Jan. They use something call the 12 Points or 22 Points which are flowing snappy and short range strikes driven from the hips and shoulders used strictly for fighting

On this subject, since the history of wing Chun is what it is, with influence from other martial arts styles, would it be unreasonable to use bong sau like a chokuzuki (karate straight punch), since it involves the torque/spiral in the same way? Not saying that's the only use for it, but it seems that could be a possible interpretation of bong sau. Thanks.

Well said at the end. Further those "fences" or boxes are a big factor how the arts evolve. Necessity creates opportunity or so I heard... said diffrently: humans are lazy. Boxes, rules and limits will make you creative and in the long run this is good for the artS (plural s) in the long run. Nobody can be a master in everything in one life time. but you can specialize innovate and share these innovation witth the world

Nicely said. Naming techniques is paying respect, as well as acknowledging the contributions and learnings of past practitioners. It is up to each of us to transform techniques through practice into something we no longer have to think about. That's the starting point of creativity...

“Wing Chun” or “Ving Tsun” is The Art for the intelligent men (women) beings and so it doesn’t work for those who have been seriously indoctrinated by/in the systematic way. Nonetheless, there is no new way of fighting as Bruce Lee also said it but just only different (new) form(s). Well perhaps, we will be fighting a really different enemy such as a programmed robot (a robotic man/woman). However, Adam is overly explaining it and definitely he shouldn’t need to justify it because everyone’s “Wing Chun”/“Ving Tsun” is different e.g. his or her “Wing Chun”/“Ving Tsun” could be the art of Silat/Kali etc. Well as for me personally, my “Wing Chun” or “Ving Tsun” is ‘THE ARTS OF LOVE’ and so you get the point right?

Stop "this martial art and that martial art" like it is a religion. All rivers pour into one ocean (I can argue with you that there is only one ocean and not four). All martial arts ultimately merge into one. This teacher has already reach the level that he can pull out anything he learned naturally. That is something many martial artists seek their entire life.
