Coming back to this video because I built a $50 budget Grist deck recently. The commander is absolutely insane, and the deck wins through attrition. Managed to fit some high cost cards in like Vraska, Golgari Queen and Phyrexian Swarmlord. Played 5 or so 1v1 games against Fynn, Killian, and Dihada, and only lost once to Fynn. My opponent had to kill Grist 3 times that game just to be able to win. And since it's budget, I have ample opportunity to pour more money into it for upgrades, which Doubling Season is definitely one thing I'll be putting in, along with some good dual lands, and my personal touch of Ulamog, Infinite Gyre or Elixir of Immortality.

There doesn’t even need to be a new rule. There are already specific rules for game setup, which is where you get a life total, shuffle, draw opening hands, resolve mulligans (hence official mulligan rules) and present pre-game actions. In commander, part of that is removing your commander from your deck (where Grist is a creature) and moving it to the command zone (where Grist is also a creature). Because it meets all criteria (legendary creature that is not a banned card and has color identity of all combined color identities of all card in your deck) during the game setup phase, it is a legal commander.

So essentially it's akin to the Theros Gods rule, where they are Creatures in all zones except for the Battlefield unless their devotion is met. For example, if I have Iroas, God of Victory in my graveyard and I cast Open the Vaults, yes Iroas is an Enchantment and so therefore yes Iroas comes back to the battlefield. Likewise, if I have Mogis, God of Slaughter in my graveyard, I can legally target it with Animate Dead and return Mogis from the graveyard to the battlefield, where then some janky hanky-panky happens. Essentially, if devotion on Mogis is not met, Animate Dead falls off. If Animate Dead falls off, it takes the creature with it. But if Mogis isn't a creature, Mogis stays. Essentially, it's mechanically similar to how devotion works for the Gods. If a requirement is met, it is a creature. In the case of the Gods, it's devotion on the battlefield. For Grist, it's being anywhere BUT the battlefield. So he's a creature in your hand, in the library, in the graveyard, on the stack, in exile and yes - in your command zone.
@unknownyoutuber20073 жыл бұрын
So yes, the spell Remove Soul (1)(U): Counter target creature spell - definitely counters Grist. Grist is a creature while on the stack. Therefore, he's a viable and legal target.
