I run a Grist EDH deck. She's probably one of the best Golgari engines next to Dina, Soul Steeper. Not only that, but the -2 ability allows her to punch WELL above her weight class and allows you to quite literally snipe problem commanders (even pesky planeswalkers) almost once per turn. The creature workaround is also incredible for recurring Grist. Many times I've actually sacrificed Grist to something like Claws of Gix just to recur her from graveyard to either recycle an ability or to get another destroy effect without having to plus her. She's so easy to recur the only time I don't send her to the graveyard instead of the command zone is usually on the first death or if people pack exile effects (and I can't save-sac her to the graveyard). The ability to consecutively +1 her also works hilariously well with gravepurge like cards (my favorite is Phyrexian Altar + Haunted Crossroads) for a swarm of bugs and loyalty so high people target grist instead of you. The wincon on her is not as strong, but fun if you have something like Syr Konrad the Grim or other aristocrat-style effects which can lead to absolutely high levels of nuking. She's also a Golgari commander that actually rewards you for putting as much graveyard recur in as possible due to the slight self-mill. Cards like Conspiracy or Ashes of the Fallen or Maskwood Nexus also make it so every creature you mill is an insect. You legitimately feel like a colony of roaches that some poor sod just keeps hosing down only to see another mini-swarm pop up. Resilient.

4 grist, 4 unearth, 4 force of despair, very few lands the rest insect creatures. Aim for a starting hand with 1 grist, 1 unearth, 1 force of despair and at least 1 black mana. On the play, turn one swamp pass, on opponents turn discard grist to cast force of despair. Turn 2 unearth grist and +1 hopefully for a lot. Might be better on the draw as you can cast force of despair on opponents turn 1 and unearth grist on yours. I'm a year late to the video and not a modern player but this seems like a possibility.

I love grist, if there’s enough bugs I want to make a deck with like 20 lands, grist, and only bugs with a few things like hermit druid (for commander)

imo the best way to abuse grist is to run a creature heavy self-mill list with cards like mask wood nexus to mkay them all insects

ok, sick...i don't think there are many insect cards yet, (I counted 25 in golgary...that aren't as few as I thought ^^) but...still a funny idea...Even if you don't ult him...imagine him with scute swarm, landfall, hornet queen, or Izoni...plus pest-stuff...and his -2 is strong as well. ;)

You crack a pack at your LGS, someone asks what is your rare, you say, eh, it is a draft chaff, 3 mana value 1/1 Insect creature.

This didn't really age well. $7 card. It's a COOL card, but it certainly isn't 'Broken'. It's power specifically scales with how many powerful insects there are in any given format. So it could be a powerful card in the future.

if you're good on your lands, you can Surgical a fetch and knock out 2-3 lands.

I recently just built my Cradle Control (CC) deck in legacy. (People tend to mix up CC and elves and it does look similar) To answer why Grist can go in both: - Both elves and CC run Gaea's Cradle, Grist's 1st ability brings in more creatures to give TONS of mana. - Grist's 2nd ability fits so well into CC/elves. Green doesn't really have creature removal, so this is a great addition. - Grist's 3rd ability is a great finisher. Natural order requires you to sacrifice a creature and pumps his 3rd skill. - Allosaurus Shepherd is in both CC/elves. The passive from Allosaurus Shepherd makes it so you cannot counter Grist. I'm sure there's many other reasons, but that's all I can think of rn.
