It's a secret sequel to a hidden ending!
Aldia, the Scholar of the First Sin, is easily one of the most fascinating characters in Dark Souls 2, if not the whole trilogy. So it was disappointing that Dark Souls 3 completely ignored him.
Or did it?
In both the Japanese and English versions of the game, Dark Souls 3 does actually allude to Aldia, but in very different ways. In this video, I argue that Aldia actually had a major impact on Lothric, and may have even inspired the Usurpation of Fire/Lord of Hollows ending. I also found quite a few surprising connections between Aldia, Vendrick, and Yuria of Londor.
This theory would also rectify one of the biggest criticisms of the story and lore in Dark Souls 3: Aside from a few fan service items, the game seems to ignore almost everything that happened in Drangleic.
