Most genes come from your ancestors, just like you may get you fathers height and your sibling may get your mothers height, that's different dna. It's simply science, if you and a sibling take a dna test the results will not be exactly the same.

So technically you're right, but the siblings are still equally descended from the same people. Remember, these ancestry test actually aren't a specific genetic ethnic make up; what they do is compare your DNA with people from different regions and find similarities. So if you test 25% Igbo or something, thats not saying you're for sure a quarter Igbo, but rather that your DNA is compared to the DNA of other people with known ancestries and their is a 25% similarity. Also importantly, ancestry DNA tests don’t tell you where each member on your family tree lived. Instead, they tell you how much of their DNA you’ve inherited. That’s why siblings can get different reports from DNA ancestry services (even though they share the exact same relatives).

I don’t think that Pat is anti-marriage. I don’t even think he has a fear of commitment. I think he has a fear of “failing” at the legal institution of marriage, that is exacerbated by the data that is out there. I’m in his age range and have had to think critically about the what a marriage certificate means to me. While I envision partnership similarly to him, I also recognize that there are key situations where having a marriage certificate can be beneficial- most of this is in regard to hospital rights, medical decision making, transfer of property and retirement accounts in the event of death, etc. Even if one decides that that they don’t want to engage in the legal institution of marriage, in a life partnership, there will still need to be legal documentation done for your partner to access those rights. I hope that they continue to educate Pat on not just the relationship aspect of marriage, but also the what the piece of paper entails, that way if he does meet a life partner, he is informed on all of those options and can make an informed decision.
