Akamba. This music takes many listeners to their childhood when things were simple and straightforward. The future was bright and hopeful. Now in our middle ages confronting many challenges including raising our own children, we can look back at the good times that have so quickly passed by. Such is life! Technology is enabling us to reconnect with our childhood and at least, to momentarily, forget the painful reality we have to deal with as we approach retirement and end of life.

Mustafa Adrisi is alive and well in Uganda, so are the likes of Isaac Maliyamungu. Listen to "MWANA MAWA" by Grand Piza. They banned it (together with all Congolese music) from Radio Uganda for about 3 months. The lyric was like.. Tina Nini Kokabwana..."Then someone told Maliyamungu that the Congolese were singing .."IDI AMINI TOKA BWANA.." Even when they lifted the ban on Congolese music, "Mwana Mawa" was never played in RU until Amin was overthrown and the "Wakombozi" made that the main tune.

Koko Zigo was always a lead vocalist never a back up, unless you wanted the mother of all vendettas. Virunga was released in 89/90 and I last saw him perform at Nairobi's African Legacy in '94. Koko was not part of Mangelepa set up but Coco Kanyinga was (bongo), who I think is in East London. Viva Makale was a convergence of several groups (inc Leki Noir, Boma Liwanza) and the core disintegrated less than a year with Bwami going back. Virunga was formed after this new phase of Makale.

Kusimba. I wholly share your ideas. The most refreshing element I still cherish in this song is Bwamys solo guitar. Three years ago we bought an E-guitar for our young one. He will take time to match Bwamys style but it is encouraging to listen to him at least trying to play like Bwamy. And when I am not pestering with Bwamy, he appears to be more comfortable with Eminem!!! And I say to myself, our children will follow their own path. But they will make it.

African music is very rich in rhythms and conveying educative messages to the society. Unfortunately, we only dance to the tunes and forget or rarely learn on lessons taught by these great and prudent artists! Many men still waste a lot of their resources with prostitutes while leaving their families suffering like Mr. Akamba who would not be available upon receiving his monthly salary until it is over! Using it to the last coin in drunkardness and prostitutes. We should learn from this music.
@mausosiralisam34843 жыл бұрын
The music was never played common languages understood by all. Manywilldepend people like youwho understand the language to interprete. Otherwise we have to do with just the rythem and the tunes.

The coverage in Kenya is spot on and I can vouch for that. You appear to be well versed with the Uganda music scene. I have always wondered, when Les Noirs came to Nairobi on en route to Mombasa (from Uganda) they had a Bongo player by the name Philly. Was this the same person as the late Philly Lutaaya BongoLey. It was long time ago but they both had the name Philly, an Afro coiffure and an association with Bongo, Uganda coincidence and a sexy dance style (the ladies say, not me). Do you know?
