Bow rise is the same, throttle control is the same and you obviously don't have the boat running and in gear when you got someone in the water off the stern. V drives have one advantage, their wake is more suited for water sports. You decide if it's worth the extra 50k

This message brought to you by Malibu. Honestly inboards are expensive. I bought a 13 year old v drive last year for over market, but mostly to surf safely. After almost landing on by buddies stern drive prop earlier that summer, I decided if I or my kids were to ever surf, v drive was the way to go. That, and I can pretend to be a big shot with my used boat that cost the same as a used runabout. But hey, if you are just learning to wakeboard (not surf), Just get a boat and get out there. you can wakeboard behind a friggin jet ski if you want.
@garrettpeterson9816 Жыл бұрын
So you and your friends used to wake surf behind the stern drive?
@jshoop306 жыл бұрын
Biased! I'd take a stern drive with a fin and surf wedge over a v drive for the following reasons: -Late 90's and newer stern drives have extended planes and decks that cover the out drive -Stern drives sit about 15" lower in the water than a v - drive prop -Stern drives act as a power wedge when slightly trimmed up - this pushes the boat lower into the water, displacing more surf wake while also rolling a larger wave behind the boat -Stern drives can throttle the bow up to clear waves/rough water -Stern drives turn and maneuver much faster, which reduces cycle times, which leads to more time surfing -Stern drives are plentiful and significantly cheaper than v drive boats -Stern drives also come with powerful engines. My 19' Sea Ray has a 350, which is plenty of power for a 19' boat -I can create a smooth, sizeable, wake board wake by moving weight 2/3 to the front and slightly raising the trim

No question that today’s wake specific boats are the thing however with the right setup you can to a degree have a decent performance out of a stern drive. Our Bayliner flight series got the tower, has no list when towing a100kg person, through a two feet wake and with a home built wake shaper gives a smooth long wave for surfing. If you get a$30k boat you may need to add another $10k to set it for wakeboarding (swim platform to distance the prop, wake tower, ballast, 5 blade prop for max torque etc) Enjoy your time in the water and be safe.

I have an 8m boat with 5.7L VP stern drive and the last 1m of the boat is a ‘swim platform’. Also, the transom is set back into the boat so the prop is a long way from the actual back of the boat - in fact it’s probably as far back as a V drive. Also, by adjusting the trim I can get a huge wake or a very flat wake so good for wake boarding AND skiing. Also, I can lift the drive and navigate shallow water and beaches with no issues. Also, the exhaust exits under water so it’s quiet Also, the stern drive has duo-props so the traction is excellent Also, reversing is easy because the prop pulls the boat - no rudder! Also, the engine and drive sit at the back of the boat so there’s more room in the boat This guy is talking rubbish. Stern drives are superior to V drives in every practical respect.
@garrettpeterson9816 Жыл бұрын
My boat I think is set up similarly. We have a built-in integrated swim platform and the extended plane where the Stern drive is set into the boat more. Basically the sun platform does cover the prop. Wondering how dangerous it is to wake surf back there. Are there many instances where you get that close to the boat? I could put on an additional swim platform that just covers behind the prop even more.... Then if you ever got too close you would land on that. First things first though, can I even make a servable wake lol. I've got a huge ski locker I'm thinking of throwing a thousand pound ballast in and checking it out. No surf gates though...

@Fordry3 жыл бұрын
Bow rise isn't really that big of an issue for safety. Just pay attention, which you're supposed to doing anyway. Also, inboards get less bow rise primarily because of the angle of the prop, not its location. The prop isn't particularly dangerous as long as you always turn off the motor when anyone is close back there which, again, should be done anyway with any boat including inboards. Inboards DO NOT get better fuel economy than I/Os. The prop angle reduces efficiency. All things equal, the I/O will always get better fuel economy. The comments about vdrives having more features for wakeboarding... well, ya, maybe oem, but even then plenty of I/Os come with towers and even some with ballast systems and any of that stuff can be added aftermarket. And it will still cost less. What even is this video? So much straight up wrong info. This sounds like someone pushing V-Drives and hitting any point they think they can get away with no matter what. And the fact that a major industry publication has put this out? I mean, what?

Direct drives aren't just v drives. Also not all inboards are expensive it's the companies that build them make them overpriced and the average person can't afford one. Also people you can buy a used wake boat a few years old for literally half price and still looks new.
@gagegr8 жыл бұрын
Well the Malibu boats used in the example don't depreciate much. A 2005 Malibu VLX is selling used around 35k and was about 50k new. That's an 11 year old boat. Honestly though you don't neccecarily need a V drive. A direct drive inboard from any major manufacturer like Malibu, Nautique and Mastercraft will give you all of the benefits in the video and they are affordable. Because they use V-8 engines and are built like tanks (no wood anywhere from mid 90's on) they are a great used buy and preferable to an I/O in the same price range. All you really need is perfect pass and an inboard boat plus some fat sacs to get up to intermediate level wakeboarding. Once you start pulling a handful of inverts the V-drives are nice, and to be honest the best reason for buying a V-drive is the spaciousness of the interior.

Wakeboarding is a dying sport. Knee surgeries on nearly every professional... You're $120k boat will soon be relegated to pulling tubes on a ski rope... Which you can do with any sterndrive or outboard for a fraction of the cost. Plus, the stern and outboard boats are more versatile without a huge engine cover sitting in the middle of the boat. Same issue Natique had 50 years ago.... still exist today...
@jshoop304 жыл бұрын
And v drive prop shaft angles upward to lift the boat with thrust while ballast pushes it down. Kinda like pushing the brake & gas at the same time.
@alexcraig79114 жыл бұрын
I have no idea if wakeboarding is a dying sport or not, though I doubt it is. However, the sport that IS growing at an unbelievable rate is wake surfing - which also requires an inboard wakeboat. (not an outboard or I/O) I can't think of a single wakeboat that has the engine in the middle of the boat. My guess is that you're mistakenly thinking of a ski boat. Those were common 20+ years ago, but you don't see many around anymore - and more importantly that's not the type of boat that this video is referencing.
@garrettpeterson9816 Жыл бұрын
Wakeboarding is definitely a dying sport, wake surfing is the new rave. I just bought a boat for a wakeboarding and wish I could have found one for wake surfing. Although I might consider making this awake surf boat even though it's a stern drive. It has a extended plane hull, and a built-in swim platform so already the prop is under the swim platform. If I got an extended swim platform on top of that then it would be even better than a v drive for safety concern. I have room for a giant ballast in a huge ski locker. The capacity plate says 12 persons or 1650 lb. So I can probably get away with close to 1,000 lb ballast. But then there's the whole thing about a surf gate or a wake shaper. Would be nice if it already had all that stuff. But I got a 2017 with 50 hours on it with a really nice wake tower and super clean of course, for $32,500. For the same price I'd be getting a 2002 to 2005 with 350 to 600 hours. That's definitely still a great value in comparison. We will see how it goes 😀👌

@@BoatingMagazine yes both statements are true. Again I don't see the relevance. I have had a stern drive for 25 years. Same boat. My kids have skied, knee boarded, wakeboarded and been pulled on a variety of tubes. As they have gotten older they have friends that have specialty boats. One of my daughters has friends that are deep into slalom skiing on courses. They have even invested on membership to a man made lake designed for slalom skiing. She will be the first to tell you that the pull and consistency of her friends boat is different than mine. Her along with her twin sister and my youngest son have gone out with friends wakeboarding on a wakeboard boat. My son was able to do his first back flip on a wakeboard because of the tower. All of my kids are grown and many have kids of their own. They are still competitive with each other and their kids are learning to ski and wakeboard as well behind my sterndrive. The first and last runs of the day are for me to open up my supper charged 454 and see how fast I can get her going for the conditions on the lake at the time. It has also been a great boat to cruise to different locations on lake Powell and flaming gorge cruising at 40-50 mph at 2600-3200 rpm. Or just opening up the captain's call exhaust and running 70-80 mph just for the hell of it. Try that on a v-drive wakeboard boat. My boat is not a wakeboard boat, it's not a flat bottom, dry header, speed boat, it's not a surf boat. It's just an all around fun boat. With all of the boats my kids have been on my oldest son wants a jet boat, and my youngest son wants a tritoon or a deck boat. Again back to my original statement I really don't understand the purpose of the video. A wakeboard boat SHOULD be the be all and end all boat for wakeboarding. But having a set of ping, taylormade or mizuno clubs won't improve your golf game without practice. The same can be said for wakeboard boats. Most people that try wakeboarding will not make a career out of it. For most boats are a way to get family and friends together.
