Thank you so much for a wonderful video journal of the western section of the Peter Wolfe Chapter of the NCT! Looks like you started on Old Michigan 64, south of Ontonagon. The Trap Hills you walked all along are not well known, so perhaps this video will show folks see how fun it is to come hike the PWC of the NCT! Our PWC volunteers work hard to keep these trails findable and hikeable! check us out for monthly hikes here: facebook.com/NCT.PWC.MIchigan/

Planning a traverse of the Trap Hills this coming fall and was curious about your experience with wildlife on this section. Is a bear hang necessary? Or would an odor proof food bag work as well? Really enjoyed this series and the lesser known Upper Peninsula landscapes it features!

Great videos! I've been doing a bit of the trail in lower MI so it's nice to see some of the sections I have yet to cover. If you ever hike the Manistee, let's team up!

This was the best one so far. That snake likely was chilly but he still seemed to trust you. I swear they do. =p I've been to that site at Bob Lake as a girl, it was cool to see it again! We're glad to hear you're a Michigander, too! Marquette is gorgeous. We're trolls (we live under the bridge). Your pictures of the UP are some of the best I've seen. Thank you. ^_^

Thanks! the UP is what inspired me to get into nature photography in the first place. I grew up in Wisconsin, but I've been living in Marquette for about 6 years now, not sure if that still makes me a Michigander or not haha.

I’m planning on doing this section somewhat soon. Where did you park by bergland tower?

Great video series on the NCT! It should be on the Travel Channel. Professionally done! Heading up to Section 7 from highway 64, and parking there at the parking lot and heading East for a 3 day hike. Can you park your car there overnight? Do you need a permit or have to call and let someone know you car will be there for a couple days? The section I'm talking about is going towards Bergland Tower and east of there towards that awesome escarpment area! Also, do you need any permits for camping on the trail in that area? Thanks for the great videos! Keep up the good work. Much appreciated! Pete
@WildernessMindset5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete! The series did make it on a local UP TV station at least, WNMU TV public 13. I'm not sure about parking on Hwy 64. I parked on the old 64 road which branches off the current highway to the east. It must have been the original route that hwy 64 took. I didn't need a permit to park there. From my parking spot it was just a couple miles west to the Bergland tower. If you're going east from old 64, those are the cool escarpments you're talking about. The Trap Hills. Those were the most underrated part of the whole UP for me and you don't need any permits for camping.

You are one of the best you tube hikers! I think if you had cool music like John Z then you would be the best. You go so far out of your way to capture good footage and it shows. Good work and thank you!

Thanks Nathan! Honest question here, what do you think is holding me back from getting the recognition of some other hiking channels? I know I'm not very good at marketing this stuff haha
@nathantweeddale90575 жыл бұрын
Good question, I'm not sure why your channel isn't taking off but I hope you keep making the great content. Be patient, I think your viewership will grow like wildfire eventually. I know you are more of a spiritual hiker but people really like gear breakdowns and fear sells. On "follow bigfoot" his most watched video by far is ,"how dangerous is the Appalachian trail?". Most important and what makes your videos so good is that you stay true to yourself.
@WildernessMindset5 жыл бұрын
@@nathantweeddale9057 that's a good point. I have noticed that the gear videos are really popular. I'm going to do a few of those and show what I use. But my passion will always be the more symbolic stuff. I'm definitely not quitting anytime soon!
@nathantweeddale90575 жыл бұрын
@@WildernessMindset I also think viewers find channels while searching for a trail that they want to hike. I found you by looking up the hayduke trail. So far the trails you have video of are not the most popular and that's why people havent found you yet...but they will.
@WildernessMindset5 жыл бұрын
haha that's exactly why im doing these trails, because they aren't on most people's radar. They will be though, I know the PNT is gaining popularity.

This series is excellent. I keep coming back to it. Hiking the NCT (UP section in particular) is something I'd like to do eventually. Probably via sections like you've done. Currently section hiking the SHT. Thanks for this resource though. Appreciate it. Did you use / buy the NCT maps? Looks like they're slowly digitizing pdf versions. Anyways, great work.
@WildernessMindset6 жыл бұрын
thanks, what's the SHT? I haven't heard of that one. I actually just printed out screenshots of the interactive online NCT map. I bought the paper maps from the NCT site too but I thought they didn't have enough detail. They seemed more like souvenirs than real maps for navigation. With that being said, the NCT is so well marked in the UP you wouldn't need much for maps in the first place.
@ginnyblanc97356 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the shorthand, SHT: Superior Hiking Trail (optional part of NCT) that spans north shore of Minnesota on Lake Superior (pretty much Duluth to Canada). My friend and I have done 3 sections now of around 40-50 miles each, so maybe 2/3rds of it (if you exclude the beginning part around Duluth which is pretty urban). Really beautiful and well-maintained trail but we're thinking about switching it up this year. Looking pretty hard at Trap Hills and then Porcupines (maybe looping into park and getting back on NCT at Little Carp River or Presque Isle River, costing us some waterfalls for lake walking). I've done Pictured Rocks a few times and day-hiked in Porkies but this would be my first true NCT trip. I'm excited. Thanks for the info on the official maps. I'll probably just end up doing something similar with available internet info for general navigation. And thanks again for all these videos. Appreciate all the detail put into them. Need to look into shuttle options and crunch some more mileage numbers. Right now somewhere near Victoria looks like a decent place to start.
@ginnyblanc97356 жыл бұрын
Yeah, feel free to pm me about SHT (not sure how that works on KZbin) but every section north of Two Harbors is guaranteed to be pretty great. I haven't done the most northern section yet but that's the only section that I've heard any criticisms of. Plus there's quite a few Ytube videos on the SHT (unlike the NCT). You don't think we'd be missing out on too much if we looped into Porcupines and left NCT and met back up with it at one of the main rivers? Also, any good ideas of where to start in or near Trap Hills heading west? I was thinking somewhere around Victoria. Planning for a 5 day hike, maybe 6 if possible. We usually aim for 15 miles on full days. Thx.

Yeah. Definitely Mirror Lake to Escarpment. Might head down to the lake after that. Not sure. I've day-hiked Lake of the Clouds before but I can't imagine blowing past it. (May save Carp River trails for a shorter future solo wknd loop). Probably looking at doing Trap Hills in early fall though (late September/early October). Any advice on nighttime temps? I've heard to take 10 degrees off forecast. Did you carry any bear spray? My friend does occasionally but I never have. Do you think there's enough crossings to warrant neoprene or goretex socks? Thx.

First off, you make amazing quality videos. I was wondering how you found navigation to be along the UP. Is the trail blazed well end to end or are there stretches which require more navigation?
@WildernessMindset7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was actually surprised how well the NCT is blazed throughout the UP. All 550 miles are pretty well established except for one spot, the McCormick WIlderness. You can see that part in section 9, I wouldn't recommend going through there in the winter haha.
@nickzav7 жыл бұрын
Alex Maier Awesome, thanks for the reply! The UP section of the NCT is now on my ever expanding list of future hikes.

Is there any towns to stop in for supplies or drinks and lunch??
@WildernessMindset3 жыл бұрын
There are but since I was only section hiking here I didn’t have to go into any towns so I don’t know which ones are the best. I’m sure you wouldn’t have to go longer than about 5 days between towns though.
