Almost 20 years ago, the idea of the Khilafah was vehemently opposed by some here in America. I remember having debates with people even on the term Khilafah. Many did not know about the term or simply opposed it because it was associated with Hizb ut-Tahrir. As soon as the term Khilafah was used in any convo, one would be labeled as HT and in many cases shunned for being extremist. And then with 9/11 and WOT, terms like Shraria, Jihad, Caliphate/Khilafah, Ummah became politicized and used as markers for extremist thought, fundamentalism and radicalism. “The fundamentalists put forth an aggressive, expansionist version of Islam…they want to gain political power and then to impose strict public observance of Islam … their unit of reference is not the nation-state or the ethnic group, but the Muslim community, the ummah; gaining control of particular Islamic countries can be a step on this path but is not the main goal. Hizb ut-Tahrir, … belong[s] to this category. Fundamentalism as a whole is incompatible with the values of civil society and the Western vision of civilization, political order, and society.” (Civil Democratic Islam - Rand Corporation) “The most hazardous is “umma-itis,” the growing tendency for younger Muslims to believe they are part of an embattled supranational community - the umma - while deriding more local affiliations. This impulse has, in turn, reinforced Western doubts about the willingness of Muslims living in the West to integrate and respect Western values.” (Unavoidable Clash of Islam and the West? - Rand Corporation) Alhumdulillah, things have changed. The struggles we used to face in conveying the correct understanding of these terms, especially about the Khilafah has dramatically decreased. The idea of the Khilafah is now common knowledge and has become part of the public opinion. Even among khateebs/imams who used to shy way from this idea and/or opposed it, now use the term “Khalifah Abu Bakr, Khalifah Umar” and are obliged to speak about it because it is part of public discourse. The West continues to malign this idea by using ISIS and certain scholars that have aligned themselves with the West or the despotic regimes in the Muslim lands to maintain their stranglehold over the Ummah. Despite their efforts, the Ummah continues on a positive trajectory towards a true revival. Alhumdulillah, it is good to see average people and some scholars speak about the Khilafah. It is an obligation upon all of us to establish it and it requires a collective effort. HT have been at the forefront of this effort and credit needs to be given to it for uplifting the discourse in the Muslim mind to the objective of establishing the Khilafah. Even its harshest critic, Zeyno Baran had to concede this point. "Hizb ut-Tahrir’s greatest achievement to date is that it has shifted the terms of debate within the Muslim world. Until a few years ago, most Islamic groups considered the notion of establishing a new Caliphate a utopian goal. Now, an increasing number of people consider it a serious objective. And after decades of stressing the existence and unity of a global Islamic community (ummah), Hizb ut-Tahrir can take pride in the growing feeling among Muslims that their primary identity stems from and their primary loyalty is owed to their religion, rather than their race, ethnicity, or nationality.” (Fighting the War of Ideas - Zeyno Baran) The Ummah has lived without the Law of Allah (swt) for 100 Hijri years since the abolishment of the Khilafah, suffering humiliation, oppression, occupation, corruption, wars, disunity, colonization and sheer brutality against its body. The re-establishment of the Khilafah is “an idea whose time has come.” “Islam survived two centuries of defeats and humiliations of the Ottoman Empire and Ataturk’s abolition of the caliphate. It endured generations of Western rule. It outlasted the pro-Western monarchs in Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Ethiopia and Iran. Islam easily fended off communism, survived the rout of Nasserism in 1967, and has proven more enduring than the nationalism of Arafat or Saddam. Now, it is resisting the world’s last superpower. If Islamic rule is an idea taking hold among the Islamic masses, how does even the best army on earth stop it?” (An idea whose time has come - Patrick Buchanan) The Khilafah is among the fundamentals of Islam. It is not “extremist” rather it is part of normative Islam. The re-establishment of the Khilafah is an obligation/fard upon us all. Whether you join the effort or be a spectator or oppose it, one must realize the Ummah's trajectory is moving towards this objective and by the will of Allah (swt) it will be established. The questions is where are you on this path? وَمَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تُنفِقُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَٰثُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوِى مِنكُم مَّنْ أَنفَقَ مِن قَبْلِ ٱلْفَتْحِ وَقَـٰتَلَ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةًۭ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدُ وَقَـٰتَلُوا۟ ۚ وَكُلًّۭا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌۭ And why do you not spend in the cause of Allah while to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Those who spent their wealth and took part in fighting before the Victory cannot be equated (with those who spent their wealth and took part in fighting afterwards). They are higher in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards. But to each Allah has promised a good reward. Allah is well aware of all that you do. (Hadid: 10) *Abdur Rafay*
