Gozaimashita is the past tense of Gozaimasu. So usually, one would use "gozaimashita" after an event or a happening, whereas "gozaimasu" in an ongoing situation. So the singer probably said "arigatou gozaimashita!" because the performance or her song ended. I hope this was helpful!

The meaning you're thinking about - the one related to anime/manga culture, only surfaced in the 80s, I think. Erin gave the original meaning of the word, which is used to refer to someone else's house or place of living. :)

Depends on the characters used/context. ^^ 「お宅」= Family or house 「オタク」= Geek/nerd

No. "Kaisya" means company but here she talks about how to say your company name along with your name in very polite way. Iimasu means "My name is..." here and she put "ga (but)" in the end because she intended to ask the person to answer her. So she meant to say "My name is ... but (please ask me why I am calling for)." Hope it makes sense to you!

San is for everyone, usually female but you can use it for everyone in general. It depends on situation. Chan is usually for younger girls. Kun is for younger boys. Sometimes your boss would call some female workers' last name with Kun and etc... it depends on the relationship you have.
@s71402san
@s71402san 6 жыл бұрын
Chan/kun usually is not about gender. Both genders can be referred that way. Kun usually implies comradeship, chan - affection. Usually guys treat each another equally as friends, while girls might be more affectionate towards one another. Moreover, "chan" is a diminutive, baby-talk form of "san", like "wabbit"/"bunny" is for "rabbit".

Otaku means geeks today but if you write it in Kanji and if it shows お宅, it means a home. So when you use Otaku for asking "Where is your home?" "Otaku wa doko desuka?" it means a home.

In that case, you would say " suki na iro wa murasaki to pinku desu"

You would use "Dono" to be polite when you write a letter. It used to be used to call a lord in Edo era.

Very good video Erin- sensei as always! You've helped a lot! :D One question though, when speaking on the phone, would the Japanese person speak slowly and clearly like you did? Or is it a bit more speedy in which way you would have to talk the same way as the person is to you? Thanks :)

Otaku means "house" or "household" but in slang terms, it means someone who stays at home all day and is a die hard fan of anime or whatever they like. Watch "Densha otoka" on youtube to see exactly what an otaku is and looks like.

@JustAnAccretionx It all depends on the person. If they want to pronounce the 'I' in it or not. It's like english, think of it like this, the word "For" and "Fo" some people don't pronounce the "R" but you can understand them but in japanese it's not necessarily slang so to say, just prefrences :)

oh i thought "otaku" translates to those die hard anime fans...
@s71402san
@s71402san 6 жыл бұрын
The meaning of "otaku" as "angry anime fan" ("weeaboo"?) comes from the closed Japanese communities of photographers or other nerds. They usually were not talking face-to-face, but via the phone...

I've noted that at the end of concerts most performers tend to say that instead of gozaimasu, which is why I was sort of wondering the same thing. Maybe gozaimashita is used more commonly to refer to large groups or crowds? I don't really know for sure, so I look forward to a more well-based answer than my own. ^_^;;

-san: The most common Japanese honorific, used to denote respect and formality, essentially the same as "Mr," "Mrs" or "Miss." -dono: Used as a term of respect. Inferior to' Sama' but superior to ' San'. -kun: Denotes familiarity and friendship when used to refer to male friends of the same age or younger. -chan: Denotes familiarity and friendship and used to refer to someone who is the same age or younger. Generally used to refer to female friends, pets and children. Source: NarutoForums :D

The "ga" here is neither the grammatical "ga" of "ie ga arimasu" nor the conjunctive "ga" (but). It is used here not for grammar, but for socio-cultural reasons. Being direct and making direct statements is slightly frowned upon in Japanese, so the "ga" helps to soften the direct statement. If that's not clear, it might be helpful to think of it as the conjunctive "ga" with the other statement cut off (i.e. "This is Smith (and I was wondering if I could talk to...)).
