@@CarsCatAliensI started in the early to mid 80’s. In my 66 Mustang Fastback. Built a huge custom box. Two Fosgate 10 in woofers with a Goldsound 12 in in the middle. I had an Alphasonik amp 125x2 powering the subs. The 12in was dual voice coil. Had Nakamichi 75x2 amp to a set of Polk audio plate speakers. Nak 35x4 amp to Fosgate mids and Viva tweeters. So 540 watts total. TD-800 Nak tape deck with azimuth control and 2 Nak crossovers. In my Honda Accord had a Soundstream MC500. 125x4. 2 12 in Fosgate 12’s. MB Quart separated in rear deck and Goldsound coaxial 6.5 mids in doors. Alpine CD changer and top of the line head unit. Monolithic preamp and crossover. So 500w total. I did also have a Monolithic PA-4000 amp. 240x2 at 4 ohm and 400x2 at 2 ohm. I only had it temporarily hooked up and I wasn’t even running 2 of the Soundstream channels. Before I could finish the system my car was broken into and most of the stuff stolen.

That amp with all of it's features was way ahead of its time back in the 80s. I bet when it was new it sounded better than most of the amps of its day. I had a 90w pioneer on a pair of massive cast frame JBL 6x9s on the back deck of a Cutlass that would hit hard with that big old trunk. This was back before we started installing subwoofers in cars. I wish I could find a pair or 10 of those JBL 6x9s. Big D. May know what I am talking about?

I was running an alphasonik 2 channel amp in my little S10 pickup just about 5 years ago. It was pushing three 8 inch subs, in bridge mode, behind the seat. I know it was running way below the rated impedance, but it sounded great. I sold it a few years back and somebody else is using the amp to power their system. Those Alphasonik amps were very popular here in Northern/Central Clifornia, still find these amps at garage sales once in a while. Cool Video

I've run several of these over the years, and all of them kicked ass. Since yours isn't sounding great, then yes, something is definitely wrong. I had Jeremy B rebuild the last one I had, and he put the volume knob on a cord to serve as a remote bass knob. He even worked his magic internally giving it a new Triple Darlington power supply. My son ran that in his truck for years on a pair of gold Kicker C-10's, and it straight rocked.

I had this amp!! There used to be a little car-audio store right in my current neighborhood, and one day in about '88 or so I was in there just browsing and chatting with the sales guy, and he shows me this. At the time, the ability to just wire right into my car's existing speaker wires and now have a sub amp, WITH EQ and x-over, was thrilling. I put it in my 1987 Trans Am. I had two cheap 12" subs that I bought at one of those little "discount" shops that used to open for a few months and then disappear - kind of like the Spirit Halloween stores now. They had poly cones and about a 40-oz. magnet on them. It was all they could do to handle that little 100W of power, but I loved the setup nonetheless. When I finally grew up and started buying real power, I still hung onto this unit for decades because it was just so neat. Now all of our amps have more crossover and EQ built in than most of us ever even use, but back in the day this little unit was a clean, tide, easy way to drop some subs into a car with very little surgery and outboard gear. Too bad it wasn't more like 400 watts, but oh well.

Excellent video!😎👍 First one I've seen by you. I have now subscribed. 1 LONG question. You say in the video that the manual will be in the description, but I can't find it. Then again, I'm old and a bit dense sometimes, but I have the AS1100. I'm a bit of a hoarder & I've had it in a box for at LEAST 30 years. I don't remember who I bought it from, but I have a LOT of old stereo stuff. Long story short. IDK which is the high power inputs & which is the sub output. I just have a plug that has been rewired, so all the wires are the same "colour", (yes. I'm Canadian), so I have no idea how to hook up a speaker. I've been wanting to try this for years, and the fact I can shut it off without a dedicated switch (the wife doesn't like the bass) is appealing to me. Thanks. Sorry for rambling. 😅

Much more to amplifiers then wattage per dollar. How much a drain does it put on the electrical system, how hot does it get, how much Distortion does it put out, how long is it going to last. Most important of all, what is it sound like? Does it reproduce the kind of sound/ music that you personally enjoy.
