There was a time when doing the deep clean on a carb scared the hell out of me. I noticed that I was amassing a large number of welch plugs. As usual I looked to KZbin for how to remove them. Using a vice and a towel just didnt appeal to me. Using the self centering punch worked fast and easy. It hasnt failed me yet and the scary old vice is out of the equation. All is good and I hope this helps someone.

Hey Dave, thank you... what a gent you are. You know, I have nursed rally cars across the Sahara in my past and fixed some really complex machines, but this little carb has had me scratching my head. I was about to lose the plot when I noticed this little plug in my new gasket set... so I googled it and here you are! There is literally NOTHING else for me to try after this? So I will let you know how it goes buddy. Thank you. The word of the weekend is; 'Welch Plug'. Cheers Nigel

Good evening Dave, well I promised I would update so here we are and just maybe it will help somebody. In short; ITS ALIVE, and she revs higher than I can ever remember. As it turns out there are 3 faults. The Aluminium Welch plug I removed just as you did, but it was clear, so I carb-cleaned with wire and all the jazz whilst I was there. But in my little carb I have a little brass Welch plug, apparently this conceals a gauze filter which in turn feeds the high-rev jet (this is what didn't work with mine... I tuned throttle and she choked and stopped). I drilled a 1mm hole in this brass welch plug, then drove a screw in and pulled with pliers and there she was... FILTHY partially blocked gauze. This was in my carb-kit along with the little circlip. So I cleaned again and heard in a new brass Welch plug (so thats both Welch plugs removed and cleaned). Now she ran but it was all over the place.
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 6 жыл бұрын
Continued; So I fixed some new fuel-line direct to the carb and straight into the tank through the filler-cap (to eliminate the fuel line) and BOOM she ran superb. So I put it all back together by routing the new fuel-line properly through the tank-grommet and she ran... but kept stopping. I cracked open the fuel-filler and she went again... AHA BLOCKED BREATHER? So removed blocked foam from breather and jeez... Like a new tool. So thank you for your help, and the Welch Plug lesson. Keep up the great work. I can now start hacking through my jungle.

It's called an "automatic" or "spring loaded" center punch and belongs in everyone's drilling kit. They are very, very handy and one thing they avoid is hitting a solid punch too hard. They offer better control too which is why machinists use them. I really like your method because punching at an angle with traditional methods is inferior in terms of control and risk punching too far damaging the carb body.
@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 10 ай бұрын
You can also adjust the pressure the punch exerts by unscrewing the cap. Hard steel- leave the cap screwed all the way down. Soft non-ferrous metals- back the cap off a bit to avoid making a crater. And the really good ones like Starrett have replaceable tips. Cheers.

@ZombieDaveAZ
@ZombieDaveAZ 4 жыл бұрын
Lol Toad, let me let you in on a little secret. Trimmers are famous for getting clogged at the exhaust port or spark arrestor. It's hard to run a weedwacker full speed all the time and that's where the majority of the carbon build up comes from. Check that first. You still may need a complete carb clean but a carb clean by itself won't stop the bogging on acceleration by itself. You will still need to clean the exhaust. Good luck buddy.

Opposite of what you're thinking brother. Most welch plugs are a result of the manufacturing process. IE: after the carb body is made they have to put in the holes for the fuel to flow. Hi speed jet and the adjustment screw is tapped. Then the low speed jet is drilled and tapped. Under the Welch plug in a 2 stroke or pulse carburetor is a idle air passage that is preset . That works in concert with the low speed adjustable jet. When the machine runs on its own with just the low speed jet adjusted it is now time to apply throttle. Now all 3 passages work together to deliver the proper fuel air mix. Again now the hi speed jet is adjustable and they all must work together to deliver power under load. If you have done all the adjustment you can with the low speed jet and it still won't run, try cleaning under the Welch plug. Some guys get away with using a ultrasonic cleaner to clean what under the plug. I hope this helps you .

When the welsh plug is out, remove the low speed and hi speed jets. They are not always the same so do it one at a time or mark them. Also there may be a Small o ring that stayed inside the carb. I use a small piece of fuel line on the end of the carb spray straw and clean the passage that way. I hope that helps you.😎

The jet (brass insert) near the welch plug is the one and only main jet and it has a delicate check valve in it. It is made of mylar and if sprayed with a harsh chemical it will distort the mylar and it will no longer function. At one time they were replaceable, but I haven't seen them available for many years now. Also, Zama and Walbro do not recommend ultrasonic cleaning. They recommend soaking in fresh gas. Zama has a great website loaded with info. Maybe Walbro has the same.

Big Texas - It’s also not $400. Some people can’t afford, or justify, professional tools. I bought a Stihl string trimmer and it’s a beast! I have no regrets, except that it’s heavy as hell. I tore my back up, a few years ago, and went back to my Homelite trimmer. (Yes, it’s crap, but it works well enough for trimming around my fences and barn.) I have a large piece of land and it’s a lot easier to carry, even when I use my ATV. I do still have the Stihl trimmer, but only use it for clearing brush.

When should you do a deep clean on a carb? When you see or smell that gummy old fuel either in the fuel lines or the carb itself. Good luck guys and gals.

@ZombieDaveAZ

Akeem Griffiths yeah,when I order carb kits, I order the 1 that fits multiple carbs. I have a stockpile of carb parts and pieces from those kits. They still only run $5-$7. Some carbs use 2 welch plugs too. FYI I use Amazon exclusively for my parts and carbs. Go to the 12 minute mark of this video to see double welch plug. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYmWZXSujpeUj7c

Akeem Griffiths not sure. Im an old man so I bitch and complain until I get what I want. Lol. I also dont remove welch plugs as religion. If its varnished and is sticky with old oil thats when I remove the plugs. Otherwise not neccesary. IMHO

What if I don't put the plug back in?
@ZombieDaveAZ
@ZombieDaveAZ 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul. The plug is necessary to cover the Access ports that are drilled in the manufacturing process.. so when you see the low speed jet "hole in the carb body it is metered via the jet screw ". Without the Welch plug the fuel is unmetered. Would it run? Probably, BUT it would be a fuel and oil rich environment and the EPA would never ballow it. Good question and thanks

You're not the only one Rob. I think I mentioned that older mechanics would seal the plug with fingernail polish. Now that ethanol has been introduced to our fuels, that little bit of alcohol will dissolve the nail polish and thus another cool trick is now gone. Thanks for commenting and stay safe. 🍺😷👍

A blast of compressed air from the opposite side will usually blast that screen filter right out. If your rebuilding it doesn't really matter but if your just cleaning and reusing just be careful and keep your hand over the backside to catch the screen or aim it down in a bucket because it will go flying.

It seems to me that you are better off just replacing the whole carb. if you cant be sure what is wrong with it.....I just replaced a carb on my 2-stroke and it is working again......I must have damaged the old one cleaning it and did something wrong, like blowing the airline into it which I sinced learned is a BIG NO-NO but I know now never use the airline.

You are not wrong in your thinking Carl. There are guys that can walk by a 66 Chevelle and say "that's awesome" and keep walking. Another guys sees the same car and wants to see what's under the hood. I'm not alone in that. So for the guys that want to know how to unlatch the hood and see inside, I make videos. If you take something apart that's already broken or not working and you can't put it back together you really haven't lost anything. It didn't work when you started and it MAY or may not work when you put it back together. So I've always been a replace parts only after I gave it my best shot kind of guy. That's just me. Thanks for commenting 👍

Soak carb in CLR for one hour, thanks unnecessary work, on sorry piece of junk.
@ZombieDaveAZ
@ZombieDaveAZ 4 жыл бұрын
Hey JB thanks for the CLR tip. First I have heard of it. I will share with you that some of us guys on KZbin like to know how things work, how they fail etc. I can't help but think that a lot of guys have looked at that Welch plug and thought to themselves "I wonder what's under there. They sent me a replacement in my carburetor kit so I guess I should remove it. So the work is not unnecessary first of all. As far as it being a piece of junk, that is subjective and possibly open to debate. The owner obviously didn't think so. MY video is CLEARLY demonstrating another way of removing the welch plug. As far as I know, I am the only guy at the time of publishing this video (2 years ago) that utilizes the self centering punch method. I didn't say it's the only way or the best way. I said all the videos that I watched required locking down the carb and using a drill. So if you didn't gain a different perspective on this unnecessary chore, that's my fail or maybe it's on you. Thanks for commenting and I hope you subscribe. I have over 300 videos of just stuff.👍🍺
