We're enjoying the latest developments in our sport right now in the Paris Olympics. Truls Möregardh entertains with inventiveness and dynamic play. Nobody wants to back up for those long counter loop rallies anymore.
Lest we forget, though, where much of these ideas come from: Without wading into the argument of whether Ma Long or Waldner is the actual GOAT, there can be no doubt which one of them has influenced the sport more. Here's Waldner in 2001, playing against Vladimir Samsonov, right up to the table playing an (admittedly slower version) of what could be today's game, chop blocking, punching (although missing in this particular case)...
Actually, since no one else can seem to get off their butt and post these historic matches for you guys, I'll start posting complete videos of them here on this channel. Let your friends know to come join us here, and subscribe so you'll be notified as they get uploaded. First will be a complete version of this 2001 WTTC Osaka match (actually starting at 1-1, because I missed the first two points). Stay tuned.
