Agree with others - this was always the best version by miles: before Green's vocal got too languid and his diction too Americanised. I loved the very early Scritti (and still do) and always thought Green had a beautiful voice but hearing this on C81 was an eye opener.

The amount of money spent on producing this song almost bankrupt Rough Trade, on top of it the song flopped and even though it was the beginning of Scritti Politti's venture into a more commercial direction, it also played as the catalyst for the label abandoning their laissez-faire approach in regards to putting out bands no one else wanted to record (the Raincoats, the Fall, Pere Ubu, Red Krayola... etc.) and start looking for some hits to stay afloat. No surprise that not long after this they signed the Smiths.
