Situated in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, there was once a mountain village called Cwmorthin. The houses here were built for the workers at the Slate Quarry which opened in 1810.
At its peak, the mine employed 500 people, with 200 of them living in the village. It is generally a quarry in name only, but a mine in nature, as almost all of the slate extraction was underground. The mine gained a reputation due to having a poor safety record and was known locally as 'The Slaughterhouse'. It was the largest and deepest slate mine in the world.
The Friends of Cwmorthin group act as custodians of the mine today, with the aim of promoting its preservation, documentation and exploration.
