Waleska is right on the bag with “Ugly”; it's pretty much them addressing the (unrealistic) beauty standards in Korea. When 2NE1 debuted, they were put down because they weren’t the traditionally pretty/cute image that most girl groups were at the time. (EDIT: you can look it up here on YT, they were literally called "ugly" in the face when they first debut) They were mostly defined as crazy, scary and intimidating due to their stage performances. They had more girl fans than boys and were epitome of “Girl Crush” in kpop back then. 2NE1 is a vocal group from beginning to end. That’s what they were known for (and solid stage/live performance), but they tried different genres throughout their group career.

I agree, 2NE1 has and still has the best and unmatched stage presence and charisma now and then. BUT specifically naming another group is very unnecessary just to praise your faves. Especially that you mentioned certain girl groups. It will only trigger petty and stupid fights. That's not how you empower women. And as artists that has the biggest advocacy of women empowerment like 2NE1, for sure they wouldn't like that. Praising 2NE1 without naming other groups is easy. 2ne1 disbandment shocked everyone, and I believe most fans agree that YG did them dirty. Even for CL who renewed her contract after the disbandment, she was left hanging with uncertainties, to the point she left a comment in YG instagram asking about when will her next work be out (because she is CL, she even leaked “all in”, an mv they had worked on but was never released). It was a frustating time for her, especially knowing how much she loves creating and performing. So I’m glad they all had left YG and is venturing out eventhough it’s kinda harder without the big company backing. Also, I would love for you guys to have a CL special reacting to her EP “in the name of love”, all 6 songs in that album has mv, and that was how she truly felt at that time, this EP was released only 2 weeks after she (finally can) left YG. she expressed herself through her music. I believe all mvs has english subtitle (“QUIT” even has subtitles in 16 languages, she makes sure her point is delivered).

Honestly if it wasn’t for YG, CL and Bom would have been the greatest female soloists by now. If only YG kept up with releasing solos for Bom after Don’t Cry took kpop by storm and if only YG fully supported CL’s ventures into the US and properly promoted the girls. All In was an insane song and if it actually got released, it would have been a hit. Its infuriating to know that 2NE1 lost so much opportunities simply cause their very own agency felt that they were too unattractive to dominate the market as soloists. I especially feel so heartbroken for CL cause her opportunities were LITERALLY in front of her (a contract w Scooter Braun, collaborations with korean legendary artistes, all her songs dominated charts and she had so many projects that were ready to launch but never could.) Amongst these robbed opportunities, CL was always targeted and labelled as selfish (there were fans who blamed 21’s lack of solo activities on her). CL loves 2NE1 so much and constantly fought for a group comeback and for more promotions but YG always brushed her aside.

"UGLY" the song was created because 2NE1 was called "THE UGLY GROUP" by so many people when they debuted. It is because 2NE1 was "DIFFERENT" from any other girl groups back then. They were the first and successful to changed the image of a girl group in South Korea. 2NE1 tackles music such as reggae, ballad, pop, etc . . . Thank you guys for reacting to them. Ooooooh! Updates on what the other members are doing now: Park bom is currently the sole artist under the label D-Nation. She recently released her newest single "Do Re Mi Fa Sol" in March. She also has a song with Wheein called 4:44, and I really like her song "spring". She was also on Queendom which was popular while it was airing. Also Park Bom had a solo under 2NE1 called "you and I" which was immensely popular. Gong Minzy parted YG and joined the label Musicworks. Her first solo release was called ninano. She recently left musicworks and set up her own label. She also has a dance studio. Her most recent release is called "lovely". Sandara Park was the last one to leave YG after 17 years (she left this year). She has been primarily working on TV.

Watching 2ne1 still hurts me to this day, but as a fan since predebut, i'd recommend some more: FIRE - their debut song IN DA CLUB - inkigayo live IT HURTS - it will be interesting to watch the MV but their 1st live performance on inkigayo was absolutely stunning GO AWAY - is an anthem! Watch their choreography I LOVE YOU HATE YOU MV COME BACK HOME AND GOTTA BE YOU As for solos: youve watched a lot of CL tho.. Bom - You and I, Don't Cry and Spring Minzy - Superwoman Dara - kiss, one step and you can watch any song from "we broke up" with winner's kang seungyoon They became one of most awarded and decorated female groups at the short time they were active : 2 ep's and 2 full length. Won rookie of the year and song of the year the same year they debuted. Music show awards when at the time, only 3 are chart shows and inkigayo would have a limit on winning. They killed the game and inspired both current girl group and boy groups to be idols themselves

The one on the bathtub was CL, not Dara and yes, it was a huge deal back then. Everyone talked about her nude scene. YG did them dirty. They would be frequently called ugly by YG.They did not fit the "beauty standards" in most girl groups. They did not allow Dara, Bom, Minzy to have that much exposure and to have a bunch of solos (especially Minzy, she was so young back then probably younger than 18) which lead to Minzy's departure from the group. They went on a very long hiatus after the "scandal" of Park Bom using drugs but really it was just her medication that was legal in the US but illegal in SKorea. They surprised the world and SKorea when they were uninvited for MAMA awards and had a surprise performance that only a few staff knows about. CL was supposed to perform her solo song but surprised everyone when all the members appeared, that was their ladt stage performance and will ever be remembered as the greatest mama awards performance. Park Bom received a lot of bashing from the knetizens and she blames herself for the disbandment of the group. After knowing the truth about her situation, the netizens and some news outlets apologized to her but it was too late because the group disbanded already. They are slowly coming back as solo artists and i hope one day they will surprise us blackjacks with a reunion.

Management aside, I honestly think that YG calling them ugly is more of like a banter rather than the usual insult. With how they were trained and cared for in the YG culture back then, those in-your-face remarks remind them, and other artists as well probably, that they're different and there's greatness in it. And that no matter what others' standards are, celebrating and enjoying their uniqueness through their work and their fans are the only things to think of. You know, those banters made them aware of their own power and made them real tough. I mean, if you can't even conquer your own self criticism and that stupid innate human need to please everyone, how can you even survive as a trainee, much more thrive as an artist? just my two cents.

Minzy struggled with depression and has opened up about it too. Dara was the only one who was safe. She was often praised by YG about her looks. Only her. They were the first kpop girl group that became known worldwide. They really paved the way for other kpop groups after them. They're not the typical kpop girl group that do cutesy dance. They all can sing any genre individually. Their performance level and stage presence is what made them win peoples hearts. Their charisma on stage is undeniable. Especially when they all sing together and you combine their vocals. Not alot of kpop groups (especially at that time) have strong and powerful vocals individually. They were unique, refreshing and most importantly so talented. They became kpop's standard after their group disbanded.

The Band Six was put together because of G-Dragon, he wanted Bigbang to have a live band with them on tours so he was the one who gathered the guys of The Band Six. They started touring together in 2012 and have been with Bigbang ever since and with other YG artists whenever Bigbang was/is on hiatus. You guys should definitely check out (if you haven't already) YG Family conserts, they are epic (back when YG still was a family), I believe the 2014 one is on KZbin.
